Winter Olympics bring back memories The 2026 Winter Olympic Games now underway in Milano-Cortina reminded Doug Beard of how much his late father, Horace (Harry) Beard enjoyed the winter Olympics. In a 2008 newspaper interview, Harry recalled, "I skied at Lillehammer a few times when I went up to Norway with some friends. I've also skied in two other places in Europe where they've had the Winter Olympics, Seefeld, Austria, and Garmisch, Germany." Doug says, "He loved to reflect on his adventures on the slopes throughout Europe and he enjoyed watching the skiing competitions (especially the slaloms) when the winter games aired every four years." Doug shared several keepsake photos of Harry's adventures skiing in Europe, plus the article that he wrote in 2008, shortly after Harry passed. Click title to see them all. Cumberland, Russell superintendents support Pre-K for All From Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On Monday, February 9, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that 93 school superintendents representing over half of Kentucky's school districts sent a letter to the General Assembly urging them to fund Pre-K for All in the 2026-2027 budget session. Local officials signing the letter were Kirk Biggerstaff, Superintendent of Cumberland County Public Schools and Michael Ford, Superintendent of Russell County Public Schools. "Education leaders from across the state have stated clearly that Kentucky's students and our families cannot wait: Pre-K access for every 4-year-old must be a priority this session to move our state forward," said Gov. Beshear. "Far too many of our kids are not kindergarten-ready, and we must change that for them, for our families and for our workforce. I want to thank these superintendents and educators for their commitment to our kids and our future." The letter, sent to the General Assembly on Thursday, February 5, 2026, highlights that these leaders are in the classrooms daily and that they know pre-K works. The letter also points out that right now, only 14,000 of Kentucky's 54,000 4-year-olds have access to pre-K. It can be viewed at 20260205_Letter-of-Support-from-Superintendents (PDF). KY General Fund and Road Fund receipts for January 2026 Frankfort, KY - State Budget Director John Hicks reported on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, that January's General Fund receipts totaled $1,358.5 million, a 3.7 percent decrease in collections compared to January 2025 totals. The official revenue forecast calls for General Fund revenues to decline by 1.3 percent in FY26. Based on year-to-date collections, revenues can fall 1.6 percent over the final five months of the fiscal year and meet the estimate. Pertaining to January General Fund revenues, Hicks noted that "Total receipts in January were $52.4 million less than what was collected in 2025. A significant decline of $108.0 million in major business tax revenues was the primary reason. The prior year's January collections were inflated by approximately $92 million in nonrecurring business tax payments. Individual income tax collections declined by only 2.3 percent despite a 12.5 percent reduction in the tax rate from 4 percent to 3.5 percent that became effective January 1, 2026. Among the other major accounts, sales and use taxes were up 3.5 percent and property tax revenues rose 39.2 percent. The large swing in property taxes was due to a timing issue of the receipt of $29.1 million in the public service property tax in January instead of December." February is Lamb Month in Kentucky Lexington, KY - Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) officials and members of Kentucky's sheep and lamb industry gathered on Tuesday, February 9, 2026, to celebrate February as Lamb Month in Kentucky. KDA Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Warren Beeler presented a signed proclamation at Sullivan University's Lexington campus while also presenting culinary students with the American Lamb Board CurricuLamb - educational materials about American lamb designed for chefs. "Many Kentucky farmers chose to add sheep to diversify their livestock options," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said. "Packed with protein, lamb is a perfect lean meat. But sheep are also an excellent source of milk and fiber as well. Every day, but this month in particular, we salute the value sheep and lamb add to our farms." About 5 million sheep are raised by roughly 80,000 farmers and ranchers across the United States. With more than 12 million acres of agriculture land in Kentucky, the Commonwealth is home to 74,000 head of sheep and lamb. Those 74,000 are spread over more than 2,774 sheep producers who are dedicated to producing high quality products for consumers. ACSO: Watch out for scam callers From Sheriff Gary Roy Adair County Sheriff's Office An Adair County resident received a call from a man identifying himself as a Russell County deputy sheriff and gave a badge number. He was familiar with where she worked and lived. He went on to advise she had a failure to appear warrant. He began to try and obtain personal information from her, and she stated he was very professional and convincing that he was an officer. Russell County Sheriff's Office advised this is a scam. As your Sheriff, I want residents to know that agencies in this area will not call you and tell you that you have a warrant of arrest and ask for personal information. So if you get this type of call do not give any personal information out and hang up immediately. Then report it to a law enforcement agency.
