Andy Beshear announced that a new, modernized driver licensing system and online portal will be launching this June, providing online services that help reduce wait times at regional offices and minimize paperwork. Kentucky State Police investigates Cumberland County murder From Trooper Jonathan Houk Burkesville, KY - During the evening hours of April 14, 2026, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 received a call from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) requesting investigative assistance regarding a shooting incident at a residence on Red Banks Road in Cumberland County. KSP Troopers and Detectives responded to the area and launched an investigation into the incident. The preliminary investigation found that the CCSO had received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Red Banks Rd. Upon the arrival of the CCSO Deputy, along with EMS personnel, they discovered that the male occupant, identified as 60-year-old James Edens, of Burkesville, had suffered a gunshot wound. Mr. Edens was transported to the Cumberland County Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Cumberland County Coroner. Detectives learned that Mr. Edens and his wife, Heather Edens, 52, of Burkesville, were involved in a verbal altercation at a residence, also on Red Banks Road, just prior to the vehicle collision. During the altercation, it was determined that Ms. Edens had discharged a firearm, striking Mr. Eden with a projectile, causing injuries leading to his death. Detectives subsequently arrested and charged Heather Edens with Murder. Ms. Edens was lodged in the Adair County Detention Center. The investigation continues and is being led by Detective Zach Scott. He was assisted by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Burkesville Police Department, Cumberland County EMS, Cumberland County Coroner's Office, and other KSP Troopers and Detectives. LWU Honors students showcase graduate-level research By Shelby Burton From the economics of jiu jitsu to the effects of ASMR on short-term memory, 13 Lindsey Wilson University Honors students explored a wide range of topics during the R.V. Bennett Honors Program spring symposium on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in the Katie Murrell Library. Held in the Thomas D. Clark Reading Room, the symposium featured student presentations spanning healthcare, business, communications, psychology, literature and more - turning the space into a daylong academic conference that highlighted the depth and diversity of undergraduate research at Lindsey Wilson. The symposium is a cornerstone of the R.V. Bennett Honors Program, where students spend a semester, and sometimes up to a year working closely with a faculty mentor to expand a course project or independent study into a more in-depth research presentation. "The students spend a semester working one-on-one with a faculty mentor to take a project wider and deeper," said Lindsey Wilson associate professor of history and R.V. Bennett Honors Program director Beth Tapscott. "We want them to find something they're passionate about and have the opportunity to really dive into it and take things beyond the expectation." Baseball: Adair defeats Green Co. 9-4 By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer The Adair County Baseball team currently sits at 8-7, recently off a 9-4 win at home over Green County. Prior to the win over the Dragons, the Indians fell 0-6 to Frankfort last Wednesday, defeated Henry County 6-1 last Thursday, and lost to Muhlenberg County 10-12 on Friday. In the win over the boys from Greensburg, Jasper Kemp did six innings of work on the bump, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out 12 batters on 98 pitches. Bryce Russell would come in on relief for the final inning, giving up two hits and one earned run while striking out one batter on 26 pitches. Russell lead the team offensively, with three hits on three at bats He also posted five of the team's seven RBIs. Kemp also did well at the plate, posting two hits. The long ball was key to Russell and Martin's hitting. Russell sent two scorchers over the fence and Martin sent one. The team now turns its attention to South Warren (8-4-1) who will host the Indians on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. The Indians faced the Spartans twice last season, and each team took a game during the month of May. Adair County will host Clinton County on Thursday. On Friday, they're away to face a team the Tribe has not beaten since 2013, the Lakers of Russell County. Spring brings baby wildlife to backyards and farms From Clare Rose Frankfort, KY - Spring is here, and with it comes an abundance of young wildlife across the commonwealth. Newborn wildlife can be found in a variety of habitats, including urban neighborhoods. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources urges the public to leave young wildlife undisturbed, even when they appear to be alone, and reminds landowners to watch for vulnerable wildlife when working on their properties. Wildlife parents often leave their nest or young in a location they consider safe while they forage or hunt nearby, including places that are more developed. Young wildlife may appear to be left alone, but a parent is almost always nearby and will come back as needed to feed and take care of them. It's normal for them to be away for hours, so don't be alarmed if you come across a baby animal by itself. It is important to remember that human intervention can cause unnecessary harm to young wildlife. Touching a baby animal can transfer human scent and draw attention to their location, potentially making the young more noticeable to predators. "Every year, well-meaning people often step in to 'rescue' a baby wild animal that is alone and appears to be abandoned," said Dr. Christine Casey, wildlife veterinarian with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "In reality, they were fine before someone with good intentions stepped in, trying to help in the wrong way." Instead, people can help baby wild animals thrive by: Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2026-04-14 16:11:35 | Comments | See topic Ky Afield Outdoors
