2026-03-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Vicky Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch.
Redemption Road to Recovery brought media representatives to Fiscal Court Tuesday evening. Money is being made available through the Court to expand the details about the available addiction support services offered by Redemption Road, a faith-based nonprofit with both men's and women's transitional housing. The money can only be allocated on this mission, it can't be put into other funds.

Mary Bardin, community resource person, operates Redemption Road to Recovery from her office on Columbia's public square, providing services at no cost to individuals nor to the county. Patients are accepted regardless of insurance; special support for pregnant mothers and mothers with children (allowing them to keep their children during recovery). Letter: Developing solar power makes sense

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Hilda Legg's well written article advocating the need to develop solar power makes sense. I read that many advances are being made in developing ways to access solar energy. Health care people and scientists are warning us about pollution caused by burning fossil fuels. Health issues result from polluted air and water.

'Nature magazines' alert us to damage done to our Earth Home already as a result of extracting and burning fossil fuels. Battles over extracting coal, oil, gas cause wars and destroy natural environments. I think we need to consider benefits of solar power and realize the harm fossil fuels are causing. We now have the 'know how' to extract power from our mighty solar source we rotate and revolve around. Let's do it!

Holmes Bend Marina preparing for busy season

By Mig Feuser/The Adair Progress

Holmes Bend Marina is preparing for a busy 2026 season after recovering from a difficult year marked by prolonged flooding at Green River Lake. Co-owner Kelly Caldwell said the marina will reopen April 1st, operating seven days a week, with strong early bookings for spring fishing and vacation stays. Winter work has included interior updates to the marina store, cabin cleaning, and dock maintenance, along with plans to replace some older slips.

A recent issue involving a drifting dock was quickly resolved after an anchor connection failed; divers from Kingfisher Marine located and rescued the anchor.

Trout Lily show continues

2026-03-25 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
I checked back by my favorite patch of trout lilies earlier this week to find that the cold snap had stopped the blooms entirely. But today's warm weather brought forth hundreds of the small yellow flowers.

According to virginiawildflowers.org, Erythronium americanum "plants come up, flower, and go to seed-all in about three weeks time," so it's worth taking a walk in the woods this week and next.

Casey's Store EV charging station opens in Glasgow

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - On March 25, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that South Central Kentucky is home to the latest fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) station. Thanks to funding through Team Kentucky's EV Charging Program, fast chargers are now available at Casey's Store in Glasgow, further expanding Kentucky's commitment to support long-distance travel and fast-charging EV connectivity across the commonwealth.

"Electric vehicles are no longer the technology of the future, they're here now," said Gov. Beshear. "That's why Team Kentucky is continuing its work to ensure our families and businesses have the charging network needed to get where they are going."

The Casey's Store is the sixth station to open in Kentucky as part of the federally funded National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program administered by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Sites are also open in Berea, Grayson, Hazard, Richmond and Sparta. The EV Charging Program aims to expand the network of EV chargers across the state.

Letter: Big Clifty name?

Donna Rieder writes:
Big Clifty Creek isn't on the list on CM! I'd love to learn its history.
Mike Watson says, "Big Clifty, a branch of Russell Creek, feeds in at the 'Sam Coffey Hole'; it has had this name since the early history of Adair County and is mentioned in deeds at least as early as 1809. Likely named for a slightly larger 'fall' along the stream--larger than the usual 'low' waterfalls on local streams."

He adds, "There are several hundreds of places that aren't in the article--too many to mention even all the bigger ones. But some day there may be a book...if I live that long :) !"

LCDHD to celebrate National Public Health Week 2026

From Jeff Neagle, Communications Specialist
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD) is proud to join communities across the nation in recognizing National Public Health Week, observed during the first full week of April each year (April 6 - 12, 2026). Organized by the American Public Health Association (APHA), this annual observance highlights the importance of public health and the many ways public health professionals work to improve the health and well-being of communities.

National Public Health Week serves as an opportunity to celebrate progress in protecting community health while also raising awareness about the ongoing challenges that impact the well-being of families and individuals. Public health efforts touch nearly every aspect of daily life--from preventing the spread of disease and ensuring food and water safety to promoting healthy lifestyles and improving access to healthcare.

"Our mission is to promote and protect the health of all who live, work, learn, and play in our district," said Amy Tomlinson, Executive Director of the Lake Cumberland District Health Department. "National Public Health Week is a great time to highlight the work being done to keep our communities healthy and to remind people that public health affects us all."

Spring turkey hunting season opens in April

From Dan Hassert

Frankfort, KY - After a frigid winter filled with snow and ice, Kentucky's 2026 spring turkey hunting season arrives with excitement for both hunters and biologists.

Higher-than-usual turkey brood surveys - summertime observations of young turkey poults hatched that year - signal healthy populations of gobblers for hunters to pursue in the commonwealth this season.

"All evidence suggests turkey numbers have improved over the past five years," said Zak Danks, turkey-grouse program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We share many hunters' concerns about the turkey population, but the more we learn about our flock, the more excited we can be about the future."

The spring hunting season kicks off with a youth-only weekend, April 4-5, 2026, followed by the 23-day general season starting April 18, 2026. Hunters with proper permits can harvest two birds during the season but only one a day. Legal birds are male or have a beard.

Hunters should familiarize themselves with the regulations before going afield. For all regulations see the Spring Turkey Hunting page at the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website (fw.ky.gov).

LWU speakers separate leaders from imposters

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University student Atavya Fowler '26 has experienced the imposter syndrome on numerous occasions, most recently when she was invited to speak about the subject on campus.

Fowler and eight other members of the Lindsey Wilson community addressed the psychological experience at the 14th edition of the Lindsey Wilson L3 Leadership Symposium, held Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall.

Sponsored by the university's Center for Civic Engagement and Student Leadership, the daylong symposium featured three trios of speakers who explored "Unmasking the Leader Within: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in Leadership."

Place Names - How streams got their names

By Michael C. Watson
Adair County Genealogical Society

Most of the streams in what became Adair County were named well before the formation of the county. The Long Hunters and other explorers and land speculators named streams, beginning as early as the 1760s. Some of these retain the original designations, others have changed, perhaps more than once. A few examples: Cumberland and Green Rivers

Crocus Creek was named for the small springtime flower on her banks. It rises in present Russell, flows through south eastern Adair, into Cumberland, and empties into the Cumberland River.

Travel: What happened to all the balconies?

2026-03-25 - Winchester, KY - Photo by Pen.
On a visit to slightly-Eastern Kentucky this weekend, we took Lexington Avenue toward Main Street in downtown Winchester. Friends had recommended we visit Loma's at the Opera House for lunch (an excellent recommendation, it turns out), and on the way, this scene caught my eye, in large part because of the building-width exterior balcony.

Balconies were once a common and charming use of exterior space, not just a prop for Shakespearian actors. Does anyone know why so few remain?

Baseball: Between cruise control and chaos, KY wins big

By Ryan Hoots
Sports Director, UntdWeStnd.com

Lexington, KY - Some wins aren't as pretty (or exciting) as others in baseball.

Kentucky took care of Murray State last night, but it wasn't some clean, pretty game you frame and hang on the wall after run ruling a team coming off of a College World Series appearance. This one had some doubt at times. The Bat Cats started hot, went cold in the middle, then finished like a team that knows exactly what it's doing earning a run rule 14-4 victory over the Racers in 7 innings.

First couple innings? Kentucky came out swinging like they were trying to end it early. Good at-bats stacked, pressure built, runs followed. Nothing necessarily cheap either. Earned 'em all.

Then it stalled.

Hilda Legg: Why Kentucky should embrace solar

By Hilda Legg

In my former role as U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Administrator for the Rural Utilities Service (formerly the REA), our office established a new dedicated funding stream for electric coops to diversify their portfolios. All forms of alternative energy were approved for this program, so that rural communities could avoid the rolling brownouts and excessive electric rates that plague many of our nation's urban centers.

Alternative sources of energy like solar are vital to balancing our ever-expanding power demand; and moving forward, our state's policymakers must ensure that Kentucky is never again so heavily dependent upon only one source of energy. A balanced approach that incorporates innovative sources like solar power has numerous benefits.
