Tommy Druen: The games we're playing

Previous Column: How our society wins

By Tommy Druen

Having a teenage son has taught me many things. One uncomfortable truth I've learned is when he's shopping for clothes, I need to find a way to kill time. He can agonize over the most minute details, sizes, colors, patterns and the clock seems to stop entirely once he disappears into a fitting room.

The other day, he was shopping at a nearby sporting goods store. In the interest of impartiality, I'll leave it anonymous. But let's just say it's the kind of place that becomes a risky Google search if you forget the apostrophe in its name.

While my son agonizingly debated whether he wanted a fishing shirt with a hood or without, I wandered through the rest of the store and found myself in the baseball section. The inventory itself didn't surprise me, but the price tags sure did. I picked up what looked like an ordinary youth mitt and nearly dropped it when I saw the sticker price. $329. Thinking it had to be some kind of premium model, I checked others nearby. Out of about ten options, the cheapest ran $189.

That's when I started doing the math. What does it actually cost to outfit a kid for baseball these days?

Barn Swallows back on the nest

2026-06-01 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Pam Capozziello.
Pam writes, "I took this spooky shot of two barn swallows at night using a flash on my camera and to my surprise their eyes were white and not red! Gave them a kind of ghostly look. These swallows have been coming to that nest for years, and rebuilt it as it had all but disintegrated over time.

These are my all time favorite birds, and I cannot wait for their babies to hatch. One year we got to watch an actual flying lesson while they took each baby out for a turn in the sky! Amazing to see and experience these super sonic flying mini jets teaching those skills to follow in their footsteps."

Moonlight in the Park is Back!

Clifty Creek Farm is happy to announce that they're once again hosting their monthly "Moonlight in the Park" events. This Saturday, May 30, 2026, kicks off the first of the summer farm events since COVID.

Moonlight in the Park is held on the Saturday closest to the full moon, when the whole bottom field is lit by the moon, and walking around in the quasi-darkness is an ethereal experience. The day starts off at 6pmCT with a walking farm tour, and ends at the Park on Clifty Creek at 7pmCT, followed by a campfire and just hanging out or strolling quietly along the creekside. Bring some friends or make some new ones. BYOB and a lawnchair.

The cost is $5 per person. This is an adults-only event; no kids, no pets, no exceptions. There is no public restroom. Parking is limited due to hay being in the field, so this event is limited to 20 people.

Please call or text Miss Donna at 270-805-1527 for more information. Clifty Creek Farm is located at 3190 White Oak Church Road, Russell Springs (Adair County).

There's More to Life Than Just Bugs

By Narda Tate

One of the things I love about Kentucky is the plethora of wildlife. Especially the birds. I have 2 large hummingbird feeders hanging from the posts of the back deck and enjoy the antics of these tiny creatures.

So, imagine my surprise to look out the back door one day and see an adolescent woodpecker, enjoying long drinks of the nectar. What??!! Why was he there? How did he discover nectar? Then, I was worried it might make him ill. But day after day, several times each day, he would re-appear and seemingly be refreshed at the feeder.

This, obviously, made me very curious as to what in nature was going on! One thing I appreciated was that while he was in a strange community, he did not at all lecture the hummingbirds that they should not drink so much sugar water. He did not suggest interjecting an occasional sip of salt water. Nor did he remonstrate with them about the size and shape of their feeders nor how often they visited. He just became one with them and enjoyed the refreshment just like they did.

But what drew him to the feeder?
