Tommy Druen: The Mother Load

Previous Column: A well-crafted life

By Tommy Druen

With the exception of news programming, The Tonight Show holds the distinction as the longest continuously aired program in the history of American network television. After more than 70 years on the air, its longevity is impressive but not mysterious. The show perfected the deceptively simple formula of comedic monologue, celebrity interviews, and musical guests that proved so effective it became the blueprint for virtually every late-night talk show that followed.

Some imitators thrived. David Letterman built an empire on the model. Arsenio Hall briefly turned late-night on its head in the early '90s. Others crashed magnificently. Chevy Chase and Magic Johnson each hosted shows that seemingly failed before the credits ran.

The Tonight Show's creator and original host was a young man named Steve Allen, whose resume defies easy summary. Comedian, radio personality, author, musician, composer, television pioneer. Entire books have been written about his contributions to the medium, but one of my favorite bits he invented was the "Man on the Street" interview. Allen would simply step outside the studio and question ordinary New Yorkers, often with absurd or leading prompts designed to produce hilarious answers. The charm was its apparent spontaneity. Whether it was genuine hardly mattered. The format proved durable, resurfacing decades later in Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" segments and Billy Eichner's frantic "Billy on the Street."

A few years back, Jimmy Kimmel adapted the concept for a Father's Day segment called "Pop Quiz." The premise was beautifully simple: fathers were asked basic questions about their own children. They struggled magnificently.

By Duane Bonifer

Part of Lindsey Wilson University's A.P. White Campus will be transformed into a late-1950s San Francisco arthouse cafe on April 9, 2026, as the poetry and literature of the Beat movement will be celebrated, read and absorbed.

Students offer guests a Taste of the World

By Duane Bonifer

Columbia resident Sarah Custer took her three children around the world on Thursday, April 2, 2026, and she didn't have to leave Adair County. That's because Custer and her children spent part of the day at the Lindsey Wilson University International Marketplace, held in the university's Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center.

The immersive experience featured samples of students' native cuisines as well information about their home countries' cultures. Students cooked the dishes, some staying up until the early hours of Thursday to perfect the culinary treats.

The annual event, which has been held for more than two decades, attracted more than 200 members of the campus and local community. A total of 13 countries from five continents were on display this year, and patrons voted on which country was their favorite food.

Baseball: UK drops series opener to Mizzou, 5-4

By Ryan Hoots
Sports Director, UntdWeStnd.com

Lexington, KY - Kentucky didn't get beat Friday night. Kentucky handed one away to drop to .500 in the Southeastern Conference.

That's the cleanest way to say it after a 5-4 loss to Missouri at Kentucky Proud Park. No fluff. No dressing it up. This one was sitting there, wide open, begging to be taken.

Kentucky never took it up on the offer.

This is where it starts to feel a little uneasy. Not panic. Not doom. Just that feeling creeping in that something isn't quite right. Bullpen questions are starting to hold more water, and questions about the team's ability to hit are ringing louder.

Phillip Coffey - Peace and Redemption

Things that I detest even when I am at my best,
Lions share of misery for the fishers of men.
Cotton mouth when it is excessively hot in the South.
Abusers of children and the poorest of women and men
Especially when it is this close to the celebration of our Savior
Who died for our sins though he never had to be cleansed

Lanterns & Tombstones Tour is still on

Dave and Mike are ready to go with Lanterns & Tombstones Tour of the Historic Columbia City Cemetery tonight at 7pmCT. The weather may look dubious, but we are not! In four years of Tours, we have cancelled one time--September 2024--due to a steady rain that turned into a downpour. We always advise those interested in touring with us to wear muck boots or galoshes, rain jacket, and hat, or bring your umbrella just in case there is a fine mist or drizzle.

We prepare all winter for the beginning of the Tour season and we certainly don't want to disappoint anyone! So, come on out, even if it is looking unlikely. We make the final decision about five minutes before start time.

Remember, park at the Judicial Center parking lot at the corner of Campbellsville and Merchant Streets, or across Merchant in the Farmers' Market lot. Then walk up the drive between the Judicial Center and the Fire Department into the Old Section of the Cemetery. Please, no parking in the Cemetery.

We gather at the top of the drive and walk from there. The route tonight is not a long one, just in case the weather is not friendly. See you at 7pm --Mike and Dave

Baseball: Indians travel to Pulaski Co. on Friday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Baseball team currently sits at 6-4 on the season, with recent wins over Glasgow and Casey County and losses to North Hardin, Wayne County, and Hazard.

In the game against the Cardinals of Wayne County, starter Jasper Kemp completed three innings of work from the mound, giving up four hits and two earned runs while walking one batter and striking out two batters, all on 57 pitches. Bryce Russell would come in to relive Kemp, also doing three innings of work, while giving up seven hits, and three runs (none of which were earned) while walking two batters and striking out five on 66 pitches.

Alex Martin and Jasper Kemp led the way in batting, both with two hits. Bryce Russell and Jackson Sinclair had one each to round out the Tribe's six hits. Kemp would also turn out to be a lethal base runner as well, stealing four bases on five steal attempts, the team as a whole would steal eight bases on 10 tries. The Indians would have certainly liked to get out of Monticello with a win over the Cardinals, but this was a solid performance against a good Wayne County team.

They will look to get one back in the win column as they face the Pulaski County Maroons (5-5) on the road on Friday, April 3, 2026, before heading south for some Spring Break baseball in Florida.

Hunting the Elusive Morel

By Donna Rieder

Dry Land Fish, Land Fish, Woodfish, Fisharooms, Wood Chicks, Hickory Chickens, Forest Taters, Molly Mushers...whatever you want to call them, Morel mushrooms are the king of all mushroomsand are hunted by mushroom lovers everywhere.

True morels are highly prized edible fungi from the genus Morchella, distinguished by their honeycomb-like, pitted caps that are completely hollow inside, with the cap and stem joined at the base.

Mushrooms need adequate moisture since they have a water content of 90%, so the best time to forage for morels is mid-Spring, often just a few days after it rains, and when ground temperatures reach 53F. The best places to find them are in moist, forested areas, particularly around dead or dying trees like elm, ash, poplar, and old apple orchards. Creek banks, river bottoms, and ravines provide the moisture they thrive in.
