Northern Lights: More ways to view natural wonders

By Veronica Arnold

I missed the window on Tuesday night for the lights, so I made sure I followed the forecast and locked in on Wednesday night. I went out around 2200hrs, and you could see a faint hazy color that was different from normal coming from the north. We live south of town so north often has some light pollution from town but you could tell this was different. I tried to capture a few in the darkness and minimize lights on the farm, but hard to find a dark corner.

A meteorologist was commenting on the fact that we seem to see more and people didn't years ago was, Cycle 24 was relatively quiet, and as the iPhones became popular, this enabled more people to see it with their camera lenses. So yes, we are seeing it more now than we used to, but there are explanations for that occurrence. The current cycle is active and many have access to phones with night cameras, so we are able to catch and share more easily. In addition, alerting people to this phenomenon using social media creates the awareness that we didn't have before.

So we can enjoy this night show without worrying, this is just the benefit of living at this day and age. More ways to view natural wonders! Beautiful!

Kentucky Color: Race to Howard Clinic etched in memory

Note: It's been over a decade since we first published this story on Columbia Magazine, but a recent trip through Billy Joe's photo albums has turned up a photo of Dr. Howard clipped fromt he newspapers of the day that warrants a re-visit. The story appears below with Ed's original introduction -Pen

Billy Joe's uncle Titus "Tite" Jessie got him to the Howard Clinic after Dr. Loy sent the writer, then five years old, there for a life-and-death-situation: a ruptured appendix. The trip was by way of the old Highway 80, then considered the crookedest road out of Columbia. But the highly skilled driver got him to Glasgow, at speeds of 80, 90, even 100 miles an hour. Saying, at one point, 'I'll get him there and he'll be alright, but that ol' Dr. Howard had better have his knife sharp, cause I'll get him there." The story was in black and white, but he remembers vividly he'd set a medical record in these parts: Dr. Howard declared him the youngest person he'd ever heard of with this condition.

By Billy Joe Fudge

In 1956 at the age of 5, I was operated on by Dr. Howard at his clinic for a ruptured appendix. Dr. Loy sent me down there in a life and death situation. My Uncle Titus (Tite) Jessie took me to Glasgow by way of old Highway 80 in a scene that would have rivaled, if not surpassed, the action in the movie Thunder Road.

I was one sick little boy, but I can still remember that night trip that will be forever etched in black and white on the memory banks of my mind.

Can remember talk of 80, 90, and 100 miles per hour

I remember the talk in the car of 80, 90 and a 100 miles per hour. I can still remember the roar of the engine and the rocking back and forth as we sped West on Highway 80. I can still hear my mother admonishing Uncle Tite about driving too fast while in the same breath urging him to hurry, to please hurry. I can still remember Uncle Tite's calming voice which boomed out time and again, "I'll get him there and he'll be alright but that ol' Dr. Howard had better have his knife sharp, cause I'll get him there."

Professionalism one would expect from a Greyhound Bus Driver

That was the type professionalism you would expect from a Greyhound Bus driver, especially one of the caliber of Titus Jessie. A Greyhound Bus driver was a high calling in those days and still is in my mind's eye.

At any rate, when we arrived the scene continued in black and white but mostly a blur of white as they wheeled me into that most modern Operating Room of it's day.

Carol Perkins: Quilts for Heroes

Previous Column: Hats make a grand day out

By Carol Perkins

Becky London is one of those rare individuals who has a vision and makes it a reality. Becky, the visionary behind Piecemakers' Quilts for Heroes, explained that the idea came to her after watching Veteran's Day programs featuring organizations that presented veterans with handmade quilts as a thank you for their service. Quilts of Valor was one of them.

"I also watch lots of sewing shows," says Becky.

"When she joined the local Piecemakers in 2018," said leader Candy Shirley, "she immediately presented us with the idea of making quilts for local veterans. By November that year, we began."

When I asked Becky what inspired her, she recalled listening to her mother and grandmother talk about the boys who went off to war during World War II and how the families and community suffered.

LWU Art Program Fall Market is Nov 19

By Duane Bonifer

Members of the Lindsey Wilson University art program will give area residents a reason to get an early start on their Christmas shopping.

The program will hold the inaugural Fall Market coming from 11amCT to 3pmCT on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship.

The purpose of the market is to encourage "insanely talented" Lindsey Wilson students to be entrepreneurial with their creations, according to LWU art instructor Karly Flynn '17.

"The Fall Market is all about giving student entrepreneurs an opportunity to get themselves out there on campus and in the community," said Flynn, who is also coordinator of the university's art program. "This event is meant to show our students and community members that these student vendors are insanely talented."

Goods to be sold at the Fall Market include baked goods, paintings, artwork prints, custom shoe designs and commissioned artwork.

In addition to products by LWU students, the Fall Market will also feature area vendors who, Flynn said, "are passionate about what they do and want to support young people who are trying to make a name for themselves."
