Travel: A trip to Alaska By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Recently, we spent nine days on an Alaskan cruise onboard Cunard's stunning Queen Elizabeth, which visited five ports roundtrip out of Seattle. Our time in Seattle was fairly brief, but we managed to hit the major sights, including the Space Needle and Pikes Place Market, both of which I recommend visiting if it is your first time in Seattle. It's also worth noting that both of those destinations are walkable from most of Downtown Seattle, but do be aware that Seattle is certainly not a flat city, so be ready to climb a few hills! After a scenic day at sea, we arrived in our first port in Alaska, the 2,100 person city of Wrangell. Personally, this was my favorite port, as it was the smallest and least visited, which translated to a feel of authenticity as we explored the quaint surroundings. The lack of major tourism in Wrangell made it feel authentically Alaskan, and less of an artificial tourist destination. While there, we strolled through town (which didn't take more than a few minutes) alonand visited Chief Shakes Longhouse and Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site. This beach is famous for the large black rocks which have ancient petroglyph carvings. Also, while in Wrangell we visited the Trading Post, a local small business which offered a wide assortment of furs and animal pelts at a more affordable price than I have ever seen for authentic furs. I spent a few minutes speaking with Mike, one of the owners and the trapper behind all the furs. State of Emergency declared after flooding From Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on the dangerous flooding that has impacted most of the state as Team Kentucky continues the search and rescue phase and begins damage assessments in affected areas. Multiple counties were hit with record amounts of rain in a short period of time, and the Governor said he will be making a request for both Public and Individual Assistance from the federal government. "This flooding has devastated so many communities across our state and taken the lives of four children of God, gone too soon," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "While we are still in the search and rescue phase, we are also working quickly to survey damage to submit a request for federal assistance. People have lost their homes and so much more, and this type of support will be essential as we work to recover and rebuild together." On Saturday, the Governor declared a state of emergency for the commonwealth. The number of cities and counties that have declared a local state of emergency has risen to 18: Bullitt, Clinton, Cumberland, Garrard, Grayson, Jackson, Jessamine, Madison, Meade, Mercer, Metcalfe, Spencer and Wayne counties, along with the cities of Albany, Brandenburg, Burkesville, McKee and Muldraugh. The Governor also signed an emergency order today allowing pharmacies in impacted areas to issue emergency refills. Carol Perkins: Junior goes to the Prom Previous Column: Here, Chick, Chick, Chick By Carol Perkins I was all alone in the soggy field that I considered my home. The rain kept me hiding under a tree overnight, but when the sun popped out, I brushed myself off and strolled to the main gate. Kari, who looks after me, would show up with food and pat my head. My name is Junior, and I am a camel. I used to perform in a circus and traveled around the U.S. with the elephants, but as I got older and slower, the owners thought it was time for me to retire. What happens to a retired camel? He goes to an auction or worse. At an auction for exotic pets, Garret Judd spotted me. I didn't know his name, but he looked me over, pulled his phone out of his pocket, and called his girlfriend, Kari Constant. As he was describing me, I stood straight and tried not to spit, a bad habit of mine. I put on my best smile and nudged toward him. If he were scouting for a camel, I wanted it to be me. When the cattle trailer backed up to my lot, he tied a string around my neck and led me inside. Mark Twain's great grandfather speaks This is the story of Col. William Casey, grandfather of Jane Lampton and great grandfather of Mark Twain. It was researched, written and performed by Richard Phelps at the Mark Twain Storytelling Festival in Columbia, KY on June 20, 2026. Richard's words follow: My name is Colonel William Casey, and it has been a long time since I was here. I left in 1860. But I'm back today to tell you the story of my life. And oh, what a life it was. A life that was filled with adventure, danger when Indians were all about, my service to the country at Kings Mountain fighting for the freedom that you take for granted? How did I first come to Kentucky and I met my wife Jane under the most adverse conditions? And how that Jane would birth our four daughters and one son in our life together? And how that it was Jane and I that brought the first group of people into this part of Green County at the time, and how that I was a part of the very organization of the state of Kentucky, and how that long after I was gone, a great grandson of mine became a household name that even you have heard of. Let me begin the story of the life of Colonel William Casey. I was born in 1756 in Frederick County, Virginia. That's near the city of Winchester. That's the far northern part of Virginia. Now my education was not from the study of books. My education came from the wilderness, the day-to-day survival, learning how to stay alive when Indians were all about. And that education saved my life many times.
