Carol Perkins: Vehicles and Mowing the Yard Previous Column: The Celebration By Carol Perkins It was all Guy's fault, and I made sure he knew it. Carla, our daughter, and I had gone to St. Augustine for a few days at the beach and a few more visiting my niece Sarah and her family. I usually park at an off-site lot at the airport, but to save time, we used the airport parking garage. Thankfully, Carla snapped a picture of our location, or we might still be wandering around looking for my car. Her husband was meeting us at a nearby location when we returned, and he was already waiting by the time the "catastrophe" occurred. The longer he waited, the less patient he became, though, to be fair, he was working that day. As I reached my SUV and pressed the unlock button on the fob, nothing happened. T.J. Health Columbia to celebrate 10 years of service A decade ago, access to medical care in Columbia looked uncertain. From January 2011 through early 2016, leaders in Columbia and Adair County realized their community was in jeopardy of losing their only hospital, the hub of medical care for the community, as debt had escalated to unmanageable levels. In October of 2015, officials from Adair County Public Hospital Corporation, Adair County Hospital District and T.J. Regional Health announced the intent of T.J. Regional Health in Glasgow, Kentucky to acquire Westlake Regional Hospital and its clinics. On February 11, 2016, the acquisition was completed, and Westlake Regional Hospital became T.J. Health Columbia. Since then, T.J. Regional Health has continued to invest in and expand health care options in Adair County, including renovations to the laboratory space, earning Level IV Trauma Center designation and Acute Stroke Ready Hospital Certification, and the recently announced Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. T.J. Health Columbia will mark a decade of caring for Columbia at a special 10th Birthday Celebration with free lunch, cupcakes, and kids activities from 11amCT to 1pmCT on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 901 Wellness Way, Columbia, KY. Scholarship honors legacy of Lindsey Wilson University Singers By Duane Bonifer Bill Straus '70 did not come to Lindsey Wilson College to sing. But singing became a big part of his Lindsey Wilson experience after he joined the Lindsey Wilson Singers shortly after arriving on campus in the spring 1968 semester. Straus wants future Lindsey Wilson students to enjoy the benefits of being part of the school's selective choral program, so he created the Bill Straus Endowed Scholarship to support members of the Lindsey Wilson Singers. "Being part of the Singers played a very significant part in my life while I was a Lindsey Wilson student," said Straus, who lives in Lexington, Kentucky. "I want the Singers to continue to have an impact on students' lives at Lindsey Wilson." Pre-K Pilot Programs expand to Frankfort and Glasgow From Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, June 14, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the expansion of the Pre-K Pilot Programs to Franklin County Schools and Glasgow Independent Schools, bringing the total school districts served through the program to four. Since May, the Governor and his administration have increased childcare access for nearly 3,000 additional children across the commonwealth through two major announcements. "Kentucky's children deserve the very best start, and Pre-K for All will deliver that and more by also helping parents save money, boosting our workforce and supporting businesses," said Gov. Beshear. "I am proud that, through this program and our Team Kentucky Early Learning Center, we're expanding access for nearly 3,000 children across our state. This is progress we intend to build on, because we know our families and businesses need it." After receiving approval from the local school boards on Monday, Franklin County Schools and Glasgow Independent Schools will join Robertson and Rockcastle counties in the Pre-K Pilot Program. These full-day pilots serve as a first step in a phased, responsible path toward every Kentucky child having access to pre-K, with curricula beginning for the 2026-2027 school year. Data Center moratoriums under discussion in Adair By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress Data centers have moved back into the public spotlight in recent days after both the City of Columbia and Adair Fiscal Court began discussing temporary moratoriums on such developments. While the issue may appear new to many residents, it is one that has been building across Kentucky as communities attempt to balance economic development opportunities with concerns about infrastructure, utilities and long-term community planning. Earlier this spring, The Adair Progress examined whether Adair County would even be a realistic location for one of the massive computer server facilities that increasingly power cloud computing, streaming services and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. Photos from Old Washington, KY By Mike Watson Pen, after seeing your terrific photographs of Old Washington in Mason County, I had to deep dive into some of my research. My wife, Renea, has ancestors in old Mason County and the neighborhood of Old Washington. I have attached one example photo from about twenty years ago taken in the Old Baptist Cemetery in Old Washington. These are from a project I worked on for the Kentucky Genealogical Society's Blue Grass Roots, their quarterly publication, on pre-1800 marked graves in Kentucky. Notice the inscription: "In Memory of Alfred Johnston, who died Nov. the 30th 1796 aged 3 days." This is a slate stone, locally sourced, and was likely carved within a few weeks or months after the death of this infant. Also note the almost total lack of deterioration and damage to a stone that dates back--at the time of the photo--about 210 years! Another item of interest to me--the month and day on the stone--that is also a birthdate (not year) shared with Mike Watson and Samuel L. Clemens! LWU TheatreFest! to present Crimes of the Heart By Duane Bonifer Members of Lindsey Wilson University TheatreFest! hope that lightning will strike twice when they present Beth Henley's "Crimes of the Heart." The award-winning play will be presented at 7pmCT July 30-31, 2026, and at 2pmCT on August 2, 2026, at Lindsey Wilson's V.P. Henry Auditorium. Two summers ago, TheatreFest! presented Henley's 1984 play, "The Miss Firecracker Contest," to wide acclaim. This year, the summer theatre company is presenting Henley's first play to reach Broadway -- the tragicomedy "Crimes of the Heart." "A lot of the cast members of 'Crimes of the Heart' were in 'Firecracker' two summers ago," said Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, who is directing the play. "They wanted to do another play by Beth Henley because they enjoyed 'Firecracker' so much and audiences also really liked it. So I thought this would be a perfect fit for the cast and our audience. It's a great play." Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2026-07-14 08:35:46 | Comments | See topic Lindsey Wilson University

Travel: Old Washington, Kentucky If you drive to Campbellsville and hang a right on Highway 68, you can travel Northwest all the way to Ohio, crossing the Ohio River on the William H. Harsha Bridge outside Maysville, before KY 68 terminates at the intersection with Ohio Highway 52. Just before you reach the river, you'll pass by Washington, Kentucky, one of the earliest settlements in Kentucky and also one of the earliest American settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. Washington was founded in 1786 by Arthur Fox, a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia, and William Wood, a Baptist preacher, also from Virginia. The first trustees included Daniel Boone. The land on which it was laid out was purchased by Fox and Wood from Simon Kenton, the original explorer and settler of the area who at that time lived close by. The town was founded as Washington, Virginia since in 1786 Kentucky did not yet exist as a separate state. It is believed that Washington is the first settlement named for George Washington. The town has grown little since the 1840s. Much of the old part of Washington remains as it did in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with many log cabins remaining. There are five museums including the Albert Sidney Johnson/Bull Nelson House, the Marshall Key House where Harriet Beecher Stowe stayed when she saw the slave auction and a 1787 log cabin called Mefford's Fort.
