Carol Perkins: Looking forward to Easter Week Previous Column: Metcalfe Co. celebrating America's 250th Anniversary By Carol Perkins Easter week. Oh, what a glorious time. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday. A full week of reflection and merriment. At the Edmonton Baptist Church on Maundy Thursday, we always have a program featuring seven speakers who depict the last words of Jesus. One year, I recounted what Jesus said to John from the cross. With suffering eyes, he looked at his mother and said, "Woman, here is your son," and to the disciple John, whom he loved, "Here is your mother." From that moment on, Mary lived with John, and he cared for her as if she were his mother. Lanterns & Tombstones Cemetery Tours return April 3 The first installment of the Fifth Season of Columbia City Cemetery Walking Tour will take place at 7pmCT on Friday night, April 3, 2026. Dave Thomas and Mike Watson will lead participants through various parts of the more than two century year old graveyard, pointing out bits of interesting lore along the way. This is a walking tour through the historic cemetery and participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket if it is cool, and your enthusiasm. Small flashlights will be provided to aid you in winding your way on the Tour. The Tour will take place each month throughout the year--April through September, culminating with the annual Silent City Tour of 2026 in October. Each month the Tour and narration will be different from previous months. There will be two "On-the-Road" Tours again this year--in May and August... Stay tuned for the cemetery locations as those plans are still in the works. There will be some specific information repeated each month for emphasis and to inform those who have not previously attended. The Tour will form at the edge of the Judicial Center parking area at Merchant and Monroe Streets, and will proceed up the drive to the Historic Cemetery. We will return to the same location. Please do not park in the cemetery. Hope to see you there! For more information, email Watson.kentucky@gmail.com, or call the Research Center at 270-380-1024. LWU Education students learn from one of KY's best teachers By Duane Bonifer For an hour on Thursday, March 26, 2026, more than three dozen Lindsey Wilson University education students received a master class in teaching from one of the best and more innovative teachers in Kentucky. Lindsey Wilson alumnus Scott Johnson '02 spent part of the afternoon with education students in the Doug and Betty Jean Moseley Auditorium of the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, where he recounted his education career, offered advice on how to reach students, extolled the virtues of learning from students, and shared how his selfless act to help a student attracted national attention. "The only thing that I get really, really teared up on is when I look back on my career of awesome students," said Johnson, who has been teaching for more than two decades. A Burkesville, Kentucky, native, Johnson told the students how he struggled to find his first teaching job because he entered the job market "when there was a glut of teachers." But once he started his teaching career at Edmonton Elementary in Metcalfe County, he began charting a path that has included being named 2025 Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Department of Education. Letter: Big Clifty name? Donna Rieder writes: Big Clifty Creek isn't on the list on CM! I'd love to learn its history.Mike Watson says, "Big Clifty, a branch of Russell Creek, feeds in at the 'Sam Coffey Hole'; it has had this name since the early history of Adair County and is mentioned in deeds at least as early as 1809. Likely named for a slightly larger 'fall' along the stream--larger than the usual 'low' waterfalls on local streams." He adds, "There are several hundreds of places that aren't in the article--too many to mention even all the bigger ones. But some day there may be a book...if I live that long :) !" Spring turkey hunting season opens in April From Dan Hassert Frankfort, KY - After a frigid winter filled with snow and ice, Kentucky's 2026 spring turkey hunting season arrives with excitement for both hunters and biologists. Higher-than-usual turkey brood surveys - summertime observations of young turkey poults hatched that year - signal healthy populations of gobblers for hunters to pursue in the commonwealth this season. "All evidence suggests turkey numbers have improved over the past five years," said Zak Danks, turkey-grouse program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We share many hunters' concerns about the turkey population, but the more we learn about our flock, the more excited we can be about the future." The spring hunting season kicks off with a youth-only weekend, April 4-5, 2026, followed by the 23-day general season starting April 18, 2026. Hunters with proper permits can harvest two birds during the season but only one a day. Legal birds are male or have a beard. Hunters should familiarize themselves with the regulations before going afield. For all regulations see the Spring Turkey Hunting page at the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website (fw.ky.gov).
