Letters: Cat name suggestions rolling in

Katelynn M. Molesky writes:
Cute cat! What do you think of "Onyx"? Or if you're looking for a little humor, how about "Avalanche"? After all, our new feline friend DID make their grand debut in a snowstorm...
Roldcat writes:
As odd as it may sound, "Snowball".
Shannon Steveson writes:
I have two different names they could be combined to make three different ideas for a name
  • My first thought is Winter
  • My second is Icee
  • My third Icee Winter

Electricians are needed for the housing industry

Ten thousand. That's how many electricians are needed to take jobs that offer up to a six-figure salary and full benefits. And, there is an annual shortfall in the electrician workforce of at least 3,000.

With the global data center construction market booming, driven by AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure demands, more than $200 billion is expected to be spent on data center development globally, with the U.S. as a major hub. And for that global investment, they need electricians.

Mystery solved: the frozen Yellow Poplar bloom

2026-01-30 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Jackie Montgomery.
Congratulations to Nancy Riddle and Page Candler who were the first to guess the frozen sculpture (at right, posted on Columbia Magazine early yesterday) as the tulip tree blossom.

One of the ways we cope with Kentucky's changing seasons is to focus on photographing the absolute beauty and mystery of our landscape. Photographer Jackie Montgomery enjoys walking with her dog Adiona in the Sano community (center) and capturing the wonders of her world - in spring and summer (at left) and in the depths of winter (at right).

The Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), or tulip tree as we call it, produces large, cup-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer (April–June) that resemble yellow-green tulips with a bright orange band at the base.

How are you coping with our worst weather?

One week ago, Friday, January 23, 2026, we were in the frantic, final hours of preparation for what was predicted to be our region's worst winter storm. Each day since then we have dealt with different dangers and challenges - power, water, dropping limbs and trees, solid ice that can't melt.

Thank you to every single man and woman who has a job in service of rescue and safety - if you've had to work outside, you have our deepest gratitude.

Today, Friday, January 30th, we continue to battle the elements of frozen ice with more snowflakes falling as this is written.

Bill payment assistance, Energy crisis assistance, Weatherization and energy-related home repairs. LIHEAP is available to assist low-income households with home energy costs. There are two separate components of LIHEAP programs.

Please Feed the Birds!

By Wendy Butler Burt

Now that power is back on and the pantry is re-stocked, please turn your attention to the birds: THEY'RE HUNGRY! With thick ice covering the ground and still encasing every twig, birds are having a very difficult time finding sufficient food to sustain them through this very cold weather.

I've been going through pounds & pounds of birdseed and suet cakes, always feeding at least twice a day because of the harsh conditions. And I'm being rewarded with literally hundreds of hungry birds gobbling up the seed. In addition to my regulars cardinals, blue jays, various woodpeckers, chickadees, white-throated sparrows, titmice, purple finches, chipping sparrows, song sparrows, doves, etc., my feeding has been bringing in several species that I seldom see at my feeders (Eastern towees, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, yellow-rumpled warblers, flickers, fox sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, crows, etc.).

I've had to replenish my seed supply and found yesterday that, although birdseed now is in high demand in Adair County, there's plenty available. I use several different kinds of birdseed and found what I needed at Day & Day Feed and Pet (they formulate and sell a birdseed mix specifically developed for birds occurring in Adair County), Tractor Supply (wide range of birdseed, including bags of cracked corn being marketed for livestock & chickens), Ace Hardware, and others.

So, please help our birds survive this challenging weather. Feed them often!

New revised Little League Basketball schedule

From Daniel Hedges Based on the weather, we now have another revised schedule for Little League Basketball. This is based on several factors, including varsity schedule, the current condition of campus and giving it time to clear, and giving teams time to practice. This latest schedule is set in stone barring any more weather.

We have to get this season completed as we have other programs needing facilities and postseason is approaching. Seedings and matchups for the 4-5 tournament will be released after Sunday's final regular season games for this division.

Congratulations Dan Held, KY Fair Person of 2025

Dan Held of Columbia has won the title of 2025 Kentucky Fair Person of the Year from the Kentucky Association of Fairs and Horse Shows (KAFHS). The reasons he was nominated by members of the Adair County Fair Board are outlined in the following: Dan Held joined the Adair County Fair Association in 2012 and has been an indispensable asset since. This year, he went above and beyond to ensure our first full fair since 2016 was a success. He spent every spare moment working the grounds, building a main event track, walk ways, road ways, and bleachers. Donating personal equipment when needed.

Carol Perkins: Snow Stories

Previous Column: The Ski Trip (Part 5 of 5)

By Carol Perkins

Snow stories. In the eyes of a child, there is something very cozy about a snowstorm that cripples the town and the county. Dreadful, however, for adults who have to work, especially those who risk their lives climbing icy poles to keep electricity flowing, while disgruntled customers make phone calls to those who already know the electricity is out. We are a spoiled society, aren't we?

Recalling snowstorms

My youthful home was a picture-perfect postcard setting when it snowed. White clapboard exterior, dark roof, picket fence, and a snow-covered sidewalk that my daddy tried to keep cleared...just in case.

Highway 163 was covered with snow and ice (in the 50s, we didn't have the means to clear it that we do now), so no one was going anywhere, but my dad felt he needed to clear that path to the car. As chain-fitted trucks slowly passed, the harsh grinding of ice beneath their tires announced how bad the roads were, and ground vibrated with the rumble of the county grader. My brother and I watched.
