Great Wooded South: Hot Box

Read on for the latest installment from Billy Joe's days as an aerial fire spotter. Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series

By Billy Joe Fudge

Unless there were circumstances that dictated otherwise, my pilot and I would lift off around mid-morning each day. Since the day before was rather mundane and there was no overnight activity, on this particular day that is exactly what we did.

We made the first two-hour trip around the Great Wooded South with very little activity. It was a clear day with little haze and increasing winds and the little amount of haze allowed us to fly higher and see further than on hazy days. Those hazy days would cause us to fly a tighter grid because the sight distance was so short. Consequently it would take longer to cover the district than two hours.

On this day, we were on our second trip around when we saw a smoke probably fifteen miles off the nose of the plane. Because of the good visibility, I knew the smoke was near the Junction City/Moreland area. I alerted the Boyle County Ranger about the smoke so he could be prepared to travel once we located the fire.

Then, as we were approaching the area, another smoke appeared south of the first smoke.

Carol Perkins: Equalizing Christmas

Previous Column: A Mad Fit

By Carol Perkins

Keeping Christmas equal is a nightmare.

"How many boxes did you wrap for Teddy? Is it the same as for Sue?"

Equalizing ends up costing far more than expected because when the dollars don't add up favorably, what happens? Grandma (or Mama) buys another gift for Teddy, and when that gift costs more than the one for Susie, she dashes to Walmart. Leveling Christmas is exhausting.

Counting boxes brings another complication. One year I spent almost to the penny on the kids. However, one had more boxes than the other, and that wouldn't "do."

I added another box, which meant I spent more money on one than the other.

Guy had to explain that the room was only so big, and if I kept buying, Santa wouldn't get down the chimney.

Jane Montgomery Casey: From Columbia to Irish Grove, IL

John Stuekerjuergen, a historian originally from West Point, Iowa, shared this series with Columbia Magazine at the suggestion of the late, great Phil Hanna. The recent announcement of the Phil Hanna Cultural Affairs Series at Lindsey Wilson seemed to make it a good week to publish Phil's last recommendation to CM.

Part 3 (Final in a Series): How Did This Great Grandmother of Mark Twain Reach West Point, Iowa?

By John Stuekerjuergen

Circa 1830, Jane Montgomery Casey and at least two of her adult children moved from Columbia, Kentucky (population 423) to Irish Grove, Illinois. That was 25 miles north of Springfield. The Caseys were accompanied by a large group of relatives (Stotts, Creels, Pattersons, Walkers, Taylors, Paxtons, etc.).

This extended family had been firmly entrenched in Kentucky, achieving success and respect as pioneers. The decision to move must have been difficult. A local Kentucky historian speculates that it may have reflected the family's growing distaste for slavery. It is also possible the family wanted to conquer a new frontier.

Although Illinois had been a state since 1818, much of its western portion was sparsely populated. Settlers had to stake out their land claims and build their own homes. By this time, Jane was almost 70 years old, and had to rely on her family for shelter, clothing, and food. As was the case in Kentucky, Jane embraced her religion and her church more closely as she aged. She became one of the original 20 members of the North Sangamon Presbyterian Church in 1832.

At the December 3 induction ceremony, held in the J.L. Turner Leadership Center, keynote speaker Makayla Wright '24 of Campbellsville, Kentucky, reminded the inductees and current chapter members that their course of study "is truly a cornerstone and building block of everything."

"It is such an interesting field because we are intertwined with everything," said Wright, who is a part-time instructor in LWU's communication program.

Wright, who was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta when she was a Lindsey Wilson undergraduate, also told the students that communication can reveal a great deal about a person.

"It is essentially who we are, not only psychologically, but sociologically as well," she said.

Carol Perkins receives 2025 Coleman Award

From Kim Harwood, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce

Chamber President Daniel Bragg had the honor of introducing Mr. Herb Sparks, local attorney and historian, as the Presenter for The Jim C. Coleman award. The recipient was honored at the Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce Christmas Banquet on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the Old School Gym in Edmonton, KY.

Herb Sparks had no problem sharing stories and introducing this year's recipient. He told the crowd he could talk for hours but decided to pare down his speech a bit as he announced Mrs. Carol Perkins as the 2025 Coleman recipient.

Surprise and maybe shock was on the beautiful face of the stunned educator, author, radio personality, wife, mother, and friend.

Homeplace needs YOUR Help

Homeplace urgently needs more financial support from individuals and businesses. You can help ensure Homeplace remains a vital space in our community for the generations to come by becoming a member today.

From Lyn Stanton, Program Director
Homeplace on Green River

Dear Friends,

Homeplace on Green River is many things to many people. For some who still remember, it's the old Hall Family Farm; for others, it's a place to come take fall family photos. Others may know us just for our Spring Plow Day and Fall Heritage Festivals.

Still others know us from our kids' programs like Camp ROAM or school field trips. And for dozens of couples, it's the place where they said "I do" to the love of their lives and where their family's story began. Many folks know of Homeplace, but most don't know how Homeplace came to be, or how we are managed.

When the last family to own this land decided the time had come to sell, they believed it was important for all 227 acres to be preserved and protected. They wanted to be certain that this fertile land, which has nourished countless bodies with its harvest for decades, and the buildings and barns that have stood for generations, would not be turned into a housing development or industrial park. So, through the efforts of a visionary group of volunteers who formed the first Board of Directors, aided by the Nature Conservancy and the Kentucky State Senate, Homeplace on Green River was reborn in 2001.

Now a nonprofit organization here to serve our community, we are charged with the awesome task of caring for this beautiful land. Of keeping a historic home built in 1802, a gorgeous hay barn built in the 1860s, an iconic tobacco barn from the 1940s, and other structures from falling victim to the ravages of entropy and time.

Lindsey Wilson community celebrates Christmas season

By Duane Bonifer

The Christmas season unofficially opened at Lindsey Wilson University on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, as one event celebrated the meaning of the season while another prepared to serve the community a big helping of holiday cheer.

At the final weekly chapel service of the 2025 fall semester, held Wednesday morning in the John B. Begley Chapel, Lindsey Wilson Chaplain the Rev. Tyler Brumfield led the community in "Scriptures & Songs of Christmas."

In addition Brumfield's thoughtful and uplifting homily about the Christmas season, the service included scripture readings by LWU students, as well as performances of seasonal and sacred pieces by the Lindsey Wilson Handbell Choir, under the direction of musical professor Gerald Chafin, and the Lindsey Wilson Singers, under the direction of music professor and Director of Choral Activities Jennifer Bersaglia.

Then on Wednesday evening, the cast of Holiday Cabaret held its final rehearsal before preparing to stage three public productions: 7pmCT Thursday, December 4, and Friday, December 5, 2025, and 2pmCT on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Admission to the 70-minute review of Christmas music by the LWU Department of Theatre is a canned food item. The show features performances by LWU students, LWU employees and area residents. It is directed by graduate assistant Kassidy Phelps '24, who also appears in several musical numbers.
