City of Columbia plans Day of Caring From Trey Stephens City of Columbia | Assistant to the Mayor The City of Columbia is again looking at a "Day Of Caring," for Columbia and Adair County. The last Day of Caring involved several organizations, churches, and individuals giving back to our community by trimming shrubbery, picking up fallen tree limbs, increasing the accessibility of facilities, and more, for elderly, disabled, and/or children in Columbia and Adair County. Work will be dependent on the number of volunteers we receive. Several church groups have already expressed an interest in working that day, but we would love to have many more organizations involved. If you or your organization would like to volunteer, or you know of someone that is in need of assistance, please let the Mayor's Office know by calling 270-384-2501. Preparedness includes your wallet Emergency planning usually brings to mind flashlights and bottled water, but disasters are also financial events -- and a few quiet steps now can speed a recovery later. Start with cash. According to Ready.gov, when the power fails, ATMs and card readers fail with it, so keep a modest amount in small bills somewhere safe. Check your insurance before you need it. Federal officials point to a fact that surprises many homeowners: standard homeowner policies typically do not cover flood damage, which requires a separate policy through the National Flood Insurance Program -- and that coverage usually takes 30 days to take effect. Free breakfast & lunch information for Adair Co. students From Dayna Parnell, School Food Service Director Adair County Schools Adair County Food Service Program is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) that allows all students to receive free breakfast and free lunch for the 2026 - 2027 school year. Your child's participation in breakfast and lunch will be essential to continue to offer all school meals free for our children! All students must take the required food components to make a reimbursable meal or they will have to pay for each item and will not qualify for a free meal. Your child may continue to purchase extra food items or a la carte items at a set price, but board policy states that students are not allowed to charge extra food items! So please inform your child of this policy, as cashiers will not allow charging of any items, with no exceptions! For your convenience, use MY SCHOOL BUCKS to deposit money into your child's lunch/breakfast account and erase the agony of lost money for these items. Contact Dayna Parnell, Food Service Director at dayna.parnell@adair.kyschools.us or 270-384-2476, for more information regarding school nutrition. Even though this program is at no charge to you, in order to continue offering free meals & receive other monies for our students, it is essential that every parent complete and return your child's Household & Income Form ASAP to your child's school. We certainly want to continue to offer this amazing service every year! Your information will be kept confidential. Welcome letter from Superintendent Faulkner From Jason Faulkner, Superintendent Adair County Public Schools Dear Adair County Families and Community, Welcome to the start of the 2026-2027 school year! There is nothing quite like the start of fall in Adair County. You can feel the energy return the minute the doors open, kids reconnect with their friends in the hallways, and Friday night sports get back underway. I know our families had a few extra days of summer this year. We made the decision to delay the first day just a bit so we could finish up work at the new Adair County Middle School. I'm happy to report that the building is ready to go. I want to personally thank our teachers and staff at the middle school--boxing up classrooms and moving into a brand-new building is no small task, but they pulled it off. Our kids are going to be blown away when they walk in. Lindsey Wilson University to build indoor tennis center By Duane Bonifer For about a quarter of every year, the Lindsey Wilson University tennis teams have not had a place to practice. That's because Southcentral Kentucky's inhospitable winter months often make it impossible to play outside at the six-court Henry Baughman Tennis Complex. That's about to change. Lindsey Wilson is set to break ground this school year on the Henry Baughman Indoor Tennis Center. The single-story, 22,000-square-foot building will be located on Fairgrounds Street. It will include three indoor tennis courts, locker rooms for the men's and women's tennis teams, coaches' offices, and a lobby/meeting area for the teams. It will be completed during the 2026-27 school year. Tips for fighting ants in the home Ants appear like clockwork. On the kitchen counter, along the windowsill, marching in a determined line toward whatever crumb you forgot about last Tuesday. Ant season colonies are just as motivated as last year's. The good news is that a few simple steps can send them packing without an exterminator bill. Seal the invitation. Ants follow a scent trail through a crack, gap, or opening you probably haven't noticed. Check where pipes and wires enter your home, inspect window frames, and seal any gaps with caulk. Kentucky Color: Eastern Cottonwood By Billy Joe Fudge Libby and I recently celebrated our only Great-granddaughter Hazel Dettlinger's first birthday in Peoria, Illinois. Peoria sits on each side of the Illinois River about 160 miles North of its confluence with the mighty Mississippi at Saint Louis, Missouri. The floodplain the River creates across the Tallgrass Prairie of Central Illinois in many areas is a marshy, bottomland hardwood forest. Bottomland hardwoods typically love deep, rich and moist soils and can usually withstand temporary flooding. Most of these bottomland species can live and grow on upland sites but do not thrive there. Eastern Cottonwood is a typical anchor species in many bottomland hardwood ecosystems including the upper Cumberland, Barren and Green Rivers right here in the Great Wooded South. When my family moved to Harvey's Ridge in 1956, there were two large Eastern Cottonwoods in our front yard. They were most likely brought transplanted from Rock Lick Creek or Pettit's Fork Creek.
