Game wardens focus on boater safety over July 4 weekend From Lisa Jackson Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will step up patrols on Kentucky's waterways during the upcoming Independence Day weekend, working to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and responsible boating experience. The increased patrols July 3-5, 2026, are part of "Operation Dry Water," a nationwide boating safety initiative that brings together Kentucky game wardens and law enforcement agencies to increase awareness, enforce boating laws and reduce alcohol- and drug-related incidents and fatalities. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, balance, vision and reaction time for both boat operators and passengers. Environmental factors like sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion can worsen these effects and increase fatigue. Boaters are encouraged to stay sober and vigilant to ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water. The Sunday drive around Green River Country From The SPRITE & BUGLE, Sunday, June 25, 1972 Far from going the way of such passing institutions as the rumble seat and the ice cream social, the Sunday drive still flourishes. But with the advent of high speed automobiles, something new has been added. The Sunday afternoon drive has become dangerous. Adventurous it may be to amble along at 40mph, taking in the scenic beauty with coveys of low slung sports cars whizzing by at 70mph is not pleasant. Travel: A trip to Alaska By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Recently, we spent nine days on an Alaskan cruise onboard Cunard's stunning Queen Elizabeth, which visited five ports roundtrip out of Seattle. Our time in Seattle was fairly brief, but we managed to hit the major sights, including the Space Needle and Pikes Place Market, both of which I recommend visiting if it is your first time in Seattle. It's also worth noting that both of those destinations are walkable from most of Downtown Seattle, but do be aware that Seattle is certainly not a flat city, so be ready to climb a few hills! After a scenic day at sea, we arrived in our first port in Alaska, the 2,100 person city of Wrangell. Personally, this was my favorite port, as it was the smallest and least visited, which translated to a feel of authenticity as we explored the quaint surroundings. The lack of major tourism in Wrangell made it feel authentically Alaskan, and less of an artificial tourist destination. While there, we strolled through town (which didn't take more than a few minutes) alonand visited Chief Shakes Longhouse and Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site. This beach is famous for the large black rocks which have ancient petroglyph carvings. Also, while in Wrangell we visited the Trading Post, a local small business which offered a wide assortment of furs and animal pelts at a more affordable price than I have ever seen for authentic furs. I spent a few minutes speaking with Mike, one of the owners and the trapper behind all the furs. State of Emergency declared after flooding From Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on the dangerous flooding that has impacted most of the state as Team Kentucky continues the search and rescue phase and begins damage assessments in affected areas. Multiple counties were hit with record amounts of rain in a short period of time, and the Governor said he will be making a request for both Public and Individual Assistance from the federal government. "This flooding has devastated so many communities across our state and taken the lives of four children of God, gone too soon," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "While we are still in the search and rescue phase, we are also working quickly to survey damage to submit a request for federal assistance. People have lost their homes and so much more, and this type of support will be essential as we work to recover and rebuild together." On Saturday, the Governor declared a state of emergency for the commonwealth. The number of cities and counties that have declared a local state of emergency has risen to 18: Bullitt, Clinton, Cumberland, Garrard, Grayson, Jackson, Jessamine, Madison, Meade, Mercer, Metcalfe, Spencer and Wayne counties, along with the cities of Albany, Brandenburg, Burkesville, McKee and Muldraugh. The Governor also signed an emergency order today allowing pharmacies in impacted areas to issue emergency refills. 40 years since Coomer's Restaurant graced the Square Doug Beard writes, "Coomer's Restaurant closed its' doors in 1986 (40 years ago), after being in business on the Public Square for 43 years. I'm sure many of your readers will have fond memories of this 'dining institution' in our town." Eighty-three years ago, in July of 1943 and during the midst of WWII, Coomer's Restaurant opened its doors. After serving delicious food for forty-three years, the family sold the restaurant in 1986 shortly after Mrs. Murphy passed away. Carol Perkins: Junior goes to the Prom Previous Column: Here, Chick, Chick, Chick By Carol Perkins I was all alone in the soggy field that I considered my home. The rain kept me hiding under a tree overnight, but when the sun popped out, I brushed myself off and strolled to the main gate. Kari, who looks after me, would show up with food and pat my head. My name is Junior, and I am a camel. I used to perform in a circus and traveled around the U.S. with the elephants, but as I got older and slower, the owners thought it was time for me to retire. What happens to a retired camel? He goes to an auction or worse. At an auction for exotic pets, Garret Judd spotted me. I didn't know his name, but he looked me over, pulled his phone out of his pocket, and called his girlfriend, Kari Constant. As he was describing me, I stood straight and tried not to spit, a bad habit of mine. I put on my best smile and nudged toward him. If he were scouting for a camel, I wanted it to be me. When the cattle trailer backed up to my lot, he tied a string around my neck and led me inside.
