Scholars extol benefits of sport performance major By Duane Bonifer The time is right for colleges and universities to offer a major in sport performance. That was the consensus of four scholars who are part of a national movement that promotes the power and potential of competitive sport to shape and create leaders. The quartet spoke at "The Educational Value of Sport," a public panel held Monday, November 10, 2025, at Lindsey Wilson University. The four speakers were members of the Sport Major Collective, a group of scholars who help colleges and universities transform the athlete experience into a rigorous form of academic study. Lindsey Wilson is among the colleges and universities considering adding an undergraduate major in sport performance. "This is a real exciting moment in the history of American higher education," David Hollander, a clinical professor at New York University's Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport, told a crowd in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship. Fellowship, Gratitude and Goodwill at LWU Veterans Luncheon By Duane Bonifer There was plenty to eat at this year's Lindsey Wilson University Veterans Appreciation Luncheon. The university's dining and catering services prepared a buffet meal of baked chicken, roast beef, salad, vegetables and rolls, and the Columbia Walmart Supercenter donated two full-size sheet cakes that each measured 18-by-26 inches and were covered in red, white and blue icing. But the quantity of food made available to area veterans and their spouses on Veterans Day 2025 was much less important than the quality of fellowship, gratitude and goodwill that flowed through VFW Post 6097 on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. It was the 23rd consecutive year Lindsey Wilson has sponsored the free event for the region's veterans and their spouses, and this year's luncheon attracted more than 180 area residents. "It's one of the finest veterans events I've been to in my life," said William Nogar of Columbia, who served in the Air Force from 1956-86. World Pneumonia Day is November 12 Once called "Winter Fever," the symptoms of pneumonia have been known since the time of Greek physician Hippocrates, who commented on it around 460 BC. It wasn't until the late 1800s that the bacterial cause of pneumonia was identified--Streptococcus pneumoniae was first isolated in 1880 by Louis Pasteur and George Sternberg. By the 1940s, with the development and mass production of antibiotics like penicillin, more people began to survive the lung disease. Veterans Day: A time for appreciation We all recognize the solemn moment of "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month." We bow our heads in recognition of the end of World Wars I and II. Most of all, on Veterans Day, we remember and honor the veterans of all American wars and conflicts. We show our gratitude in many ways. Some of us will attend parades, ceremonies or prayer services. Others will take time to remember family members and friends who served in past and present conflicts. Many of us will just say, "Thank you for your service." Football: Indians wrap up season in Murray By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer On Friday, November 7, 2025, the Adair County Indians Football team fell 45-8 on the road to Murray in the Class 3A 2025 UK HeathCare Sports Medicine State Football playoffs, marking the end of an up-and-down season for the Tribe. Senior Ryder Rodgers finished as the Tribe's leading rusher and leader in offensive production and touchdowns. Replacing the large hole left by his graduation will undoubtably be a focus for the Indians heading into this off season. Rodgers also ends as the Indians leading tackler on defense, followed by junior Tristan Mullins and senior Mahlon Coblentz. The Indians finished the season at 3-8, despite injuries and other difficulties, and a playoff appearance is still cause for celebration, and excitement for what next season will bring. Seeing two of the team's three leading tacklers graduate will be a huge challenge for the Indians defense next year, but there is younger depth waiting in the wings.
