Great Wooded South IX: Going Out West, Part III Read on for the latest installment from Billy Joe's days in the Kentucky Division of Forestry. Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series By Billy Joe Fudge There is a phrase used in the military rank and file that we folk on Western Fire Detail borrowed, "hurry up and wait". Whether we were sleeping outside on the ground, on a cot inside or outside, on a fire or on R & R, someone had the job of waking us up at 4:00 a.m. The second morning in Boise was no different. At 4:00 a.m. we were awakened. We had about twelve minutes to eat breakfast. Then we stood outside in the early morning, high desert chill for about two hours waiting for buses to come pick us up and take us to the airport. Next we were hurried and crammed into buses like many of us rode to school in the late fifties and sixties. With gears grinding, we sped to the airport. LWU: Bennett and McKinnon making history in England By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University student Max Bennett '29 and physics professor Mark McKinnon are making history while spreading the school's name overseas. The two are the first members of the Lindsey Wilson community to participate in the university's new partnership at Harlaxton College in England. This spring semester, Bennett is taking a full slate of classes and McKinnon is teaching a trio of courses to students at Harlaxton College -- which is housed in a nearly 200-year-old Victorian manor in Grantham, England, that serves as the University of Evansville's study-abroad center. It's Bennett's first time studying abroad, and he's off to an adventurous start. After getting settled into his room in a carriage house at the college, Bennett visited London, which is about three hours south of Grantham, and also the city of Nottingham, which is about 25 miles to the west. "I've always wanted to travel, and coming over here you get that experience," said Bennett, who is a psychophysiology major on the dental school path from Hiseville, Kentucky. "It's just a great opportunity to see new sites and eat food you've never had before while working toward my academic goals." Winter storm gives Lindsey students new experiences By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University student Maria Eduarda '28 had never experienced snow until last weekend. And her first experience exceeded expectations. Eduarda, who is a biology major from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was among several hundred Lindsey Wilson students who enjoyed a winter wonderland and unplanned day off as more than three inches of snow were spread over the university's A.P. White Campus over the weekend. The storm, which finished off with a layer of ice before ushering in frigid temperatures, closed the campus and canceled classes on Monday, January 26, 2026. The campus remained closed on Tuesday, January 27, but classes were held virtually. "It was my dream," said Eduarda, who sent pictures of the campus to her family members in Brazil, where it is the middle of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. "It was more pretty than I thought it would be. The trees, with ice, were so pretty." Carol Perkins: The Ski Trip (Part 5 of 5) Previous Column: The Ski Trip (Part 4 of 5) By Carol Perkins I left off with my skis in place and headed to the bottom of the slope. Guy and the bus driver watched as I faded into the night. The closer I raced down the slope, the more I feared I would kill someone else instead of myself. "GET OUT OF THE WAY!" I screamed. It took a second or two, but when the other skiers saw me, they scattered. I hit a massive mound of snow (stacked to stop runaway skiers) face-first and was glad to do it. Before too long, Guy was down the mountain and ready to ride the lift back up to the lodge with me. He didn't want to tell me that the lift did not stop to let skiers off. He had had a previous encounter where he took off his skis, placed them across his chest, and almost choked himself when he realized he had to jump off. "Get ready, now, because you are going to have to jump off," he said as we rose closer to the top. TJSCH is first provider in US to offer BrainWatch From Stacey Biggs When patients arrive in the emergency department confused, unresponsive, or experiencing seizure-like episodes, time is critical. Worried families want answers quickly, and doctors need to understand what's happening inside the brain as soon as possible. At T.J. Samson Community Hospital, new technology is helping give doctors faster information for patients with potentially dangerous neurological issues. Recently T.J. Samson became the first hospital in the U.S. to introduce BrainWatch from Natus, a rapid electroencephalogram (EEG) system that delivers critical insights to suspected seizure activity in patients within minutes. Not all seizures show visible signs when they are occurring, and EEG acts as a window into the brain for doctors to provide diagnosis and treatment. Using a comfortable, wireless headband, BrainWatch begins recording brain activity almost immediately, giving doctors valuable insights right from the start. Dr. Kyra Schmidt, a Board-certified neurologist at T.J. Samson, championed the implementation of this exciting new technology. "Even in the best circumstances, a traditional EEG testing may have a wait time of up to several hours," says Dr. Schmidt. "For some patients, this is a crucial window for us to provide treatment. BrainWatch gives us the data we need to confidently diagnose and treat patients much faster." Basketball: Indians defeat Eagles at Home By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer On Friday, January 23, 2026, the Adair County Indians defeated the Campbellsville Eagles 75-72 at home. The Indians repeatedly opened up double digit leads over Campbellsville, but the Eagles refused to go away and kept it close before mounting a comeback at the end. The Indians were thankfully able to hold on late and pickup their 15th win of the season, and their fourth District win. Senior Tylin George led the scoring for Adair County with 26, followed by Dawson Gilbert with 16, John Shehan with 12, and Samuel Feese with 11. Landon Blakey led the team in rebounds, with 12, followed by Shehan with eight, and George with six. The team shot the ball 48% from the floor, 43% from three point range, and just 46% from the free throw line. The team's return to the court is uncertain due to weather. Saturday's game was canceled. The Indians are next scheduled to travel to face Madisonville-North Hopkins (3-16) on Tuesday, but as of now that seems unlikely.
