Letter: Gas Prices Ann Pearson writes: I have wondered the same thing; I buy gas in Edmonton for $2.39, while it's $2.69 in Columbia. It's always higher here than any adjoining county. It's been that way for years. Every time they build a new station we hear oh we'll have some competition now on gas but it's always the same, the new place just charges what everyone else does. I can't see a reason why Columbia/Adair is so high all the time.Comments re: Price of Gas Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2026-01-06 17:55:43 | Comments | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Letter: Price of Gas Bryan New writes: There was a time in my life where gas was between 25 and 35 cents a gallon. At that time it was called regular (leaded). During my college years Id get gas for 46 cents a gallon because I worked for Hurtz at the airport and filled up there. Everyone threw a fit when gas reached a dollar a gallon.Comments re: Price of Gas Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2026-01-06 14:55:23 | Comments | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Basketball: Indians win in Double OT By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer For the second time in three days, Adair County fans have gotten to experience a rare double overtime win. This time it featured the Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team, who pulled out an 83-80 win over Russell County on the road on Monday, January 5, 2026. This game was also the first round of the Kentucky 2A Championship 4th Sectional. With this win, the Tribe will face LaRue County on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Marion County High School, 735 E Main St, Lebanon, KY. In the Russell County game, the Indians struggled without star Tylin George and fell behind early 22-10 after the first quarter. They closed the gap to six at the half, 32-26. The Indians came back and took the lead in the third quarter, leading 48-46 by the end of the period. The game would be knotted up 58-all at the end of regulation, and was tied again after the end of the first overtime period. Ultimately, thanks to good ball control and free throw shooting, the Indians were able to prevail late in this one. Landon Blakey and Dawson Gilbert led the scoring for the team, both putting up well upwards of 25 points. The Indians will look to extend their winning streak as they head to Glasgow to face the Scotties tonight. Tip off is scheduled for 6pmCT on Tuesday, January 6, 2025 at Glasgow High School, 1601 Columbia Ave., Glasgow, KY. Tickets are $7, and can be purchased at gofan.co. Terry Knifley donates map carried in Desert Storm A meaningful piece of military history was shared with the Adair County Genealogical Society at the recent Show-and-Tell Social when local veteran Terry Knifley donated a map he carried during Operation Desert Storm. Knifley explained that he had recently come across the map unexpectedly while going through a gun case containing hunting equipment. "I wasn't going to bring anything," he said. "I was trying to get some of my hunting equipment out, and I came across this in the gun case. I thought I'd bring it to show y'all." "This is where we went to Desert Storm in '91," Knifley said. The map documents the areas where Knifley served during the 1991 Gulf War. He was a member of the 623rd Field Artillery Unit. Basketball: Lady Indians win thriller in Green Co. By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Lady Indians defeated the Green County Dragons 64-61 on the road in double overtime. The game was a thriller. We were tied 16-16 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Indians ripped off an 11-0 run to open the second quarter, and they lead by nine at the half. However, Green County fought back and cut the Adair County advantage to just three by the end of the third quarter. Regulation play ended with the game all tied at 48. The first overtime period led to another deadlock, this time 58-58. Tough defense in the final period put the Lady Indians over the top for a 64-61 win. Sophomore Reese Bardin lead the scoring with 17, followed by senior Kinzlee Akin with 14. Freshman Ella Brown lead the team off the backboard with eight rebounds and 8th grader Ila Loy pulled down seven. The team shot the ball 39% from the floor and 40% from three point range. They shot 60% from the free throw line. This win for Adair County snaps a streak of 15 straight wins for Green County over Adair County stretching all the way back to 2014. This was also the first recorded double overtime game for the program since 2019, when the team fell 41-40 to Cumberland County in double OT. The Lady Indians will look to carry the momentum from this win as they prepare for a road trip to take on the Glasgow Lady Scotties (3-9) at 6pmCT on Tuesday, January 8, 2025. Tommy Druen: Change is hard Previous Column: Collective gullibility By Tommy Druen A few years ago, I came across a historical photograph that caught my attention. It showed a massive traffic jam in Sweden in 1967. Traffic jams, of course, are nothing remarkable. We've all endured them--whether during rush hour in a city or stuck behind a slow-moving tractor on a one-lane country road. But this one was different. The photograph captured a moment of complete and utter chaos, with no obvious cause. Having read the caption of the photo, I knew the basic reason for the congestion, but I hadn't given it much thought until Dr. Patrick DeVane, my pastor, referenced it in a recent sermon. He told the story of September 3, 1967--the day Sweden experienced Hoegertrafikomlaeggningen, better known to us non-Swedish speakers as the day the country switched from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the right. This was not a decision the Swedes made lightly. The issue was hotly debated for eight years before a final determination was reached. The reason was that all their neighboring countries drove on the right and the vast majority of the vehicles owned by Swedes were designed to be driven on the right. The decision was made with the intent to reduce accidents. Even then though, the change was not immediate. The switch was scheduled to occur four years later, allowing ample time for a comprehensive public information campaign.
