Lance Burton shares magic--and time--at Summit Manor

2025-12-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Mig Feuser.
Lance Burton delighted the residents at Summit Manor earlier this month, bringing a handful of everyday objects and a sense of wonder to serve up a close, personal show right here in Columbia.

The Legendary Magician calls Adair County home these days, but he still spends weeks on the road, bringing his craft to audiences across the country.

Legendary Magician Lance Burton shares magic--and time--at Summit Manor

By Mig Feuser

Is it possible to pull towels out of a raw egg? No, it is not. Lance Burton says it is -- and last week, he proved it. Performing at Summit Manor, the world-famous Las Vegas magician treated more than 20 residents to a free, up-close magic show that left plenty of jaws dropped and smiles all around. And of course Burton had rolled his sleeves up before performing. No hidden things there.

Burton even appeared to explain the trick. He turned the egg toward the audience and showed that it was fake, with a small opening hidden in the shell. "Ahh," came the knowing response from the crowd. But they had underestimated the magician. Burton then showed the same egg, peeled away the suspected hidden opening, and cracked it into a glass -- revealing a real, raw egg. The room erupted in laughter and applause.

For many in attendance, it was a rare and personal encounter with one of the most successful stage magicians in American history.

Let there be peace in every child's home this holiday season

Click article title and read on to find ways you can support the valuable work of CAC Kentucky.

By Laura Kretzer
Chief Strategy Officer/Interim CEO
Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky

While many children in Kentucky unwrap joy during the holidays, far too many are carrying trauma that reshapes their childhood and their future. For these children, the greatest gifts are not toys or treats, but safety, love, and healing.

In the United States, 1 in 7 children will experience abuse or neglect. Children who experience abuse are more likely to experience poor physical and mental health outcomes in the future. Abuse is not a singular occurrence; it is a burden that children carry into adulthood and across generations. Withproper identification, education, treatment, prosecution of perpetrators and healing of victims, Kentucky is at the forefront of the fight against child abuse, and leading the charge is Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky.

The Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky (CAC Kentucky) is the unifying force behind 15 regional Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) across the Commonwealth, ensuring they have the resources, training, and support needed to effectively serve child victims of abuse. From Kentucky's smallest towns to its largest cities, each center is equipped to provide forensic interviews, victim support, advocacy, medical evaluations and mental health services - all within one child-friendly location. In alignment with the national model for a coordinated and comprehensive response, each child receives care from a multidisciplinary team of professionals working together to create the best outcome for that individual child. Each year, Kentucky's CACs serve abuse victims from all 120 counties, demonstrating how immediate access is essential to hope and healing.

Christmas Long Ago by Henry Giles, 1961

This was written by Adair County's own Henry Giles, well-known humorist and philosopher, among many other talents. It first appeared in the Adair County News in 1961, and was repeated, for the message was timeless, in December 1975. Enjoy-- Mike Watson

By Henry Giles

Each child hung up only one stocking, but its contents seemed wonderful. And there was fruit and brought-on tidbits that were rare indeed. The title has been forgotten, but each year as the season approaches, a little four-line Christmas poem still echoes from 'way back yonder.'

Close your eyes and listen to it as recited by a slender little six-year old girl--blue-eyed and blonde, Cousin Pearl. Dressed in a stiffly starched, red-and-white checkered dress, Cousin Pearl tips noiselessly to the center of the stage in front of the big Christmas tree. All is quiet in the little one-room school house at Spout Springs in Adair County, as she holds up a small stocking and recites:

Night Trips: Looking at Holiday Lights on Hwy 55

By Linda Waggener

About a quarter mile past Glens Fork, a quiet stretch of road suddenly glows with unexpected magic. A quick glance to the right reveals what looks like a forest of Christmas trees - dozens of them - each one lit in brilliant color, cascading down a hillside in a cheerful holiday display.

At first, you might think you've seen all of them in front of the pretty home. But the scene insists on a second look. To truly take it in, you have to slow down, stop, turn around, and look again. Trees stretch across the front of a workshop building - dozens more illuminated trees - completing a display that feels both whimsical and intentional.

Letter: The people make the place

By Billy Joe Fudge

David, the opportunity you presented is definitely one in which I wanted to participate.

I lived the first five years of my life in the Toria Community, thirty two years in the Harvey's' Ridge/Sparksville Community, six years in Rolling Hills Subdivision, 1 year on East 80 and around 30+ years in Greenhills.

After examining all the considerations you presented, I found that each "corner" had special topographic features, different house styles, buildings and animals that will forever fill my heart to overflowing. However, I must say that "the people" are what make a place a community and a house a home!

Carol Perkins: One Voice

Previous Column: Santa Comes to Town

By Carol Perkins

Before the Christmas holiday, Michael gave his middle school classmates invitations to a birthday party. With a warm smile, he said, "I hope you can come," handing a card to each student. "It begins at three here in our auditorium, so you should have all your presents opened and lunch over by then."

Knowing they didn't have much time on Christmas Day, the students glanced at the invitation, smiled briefly, and continued on their way. Poor Michael. What a shame to be born on December 25th, they thought. He must expect an enormous crowd to have it at school.

After class, his classmate Sally pulled him aside and whispered, "Michael, I hate to say it, but I don't think many people will come to your party. Why don't you have it after Christmas?"

"That wouldn't be the same."

Basketball: Indians defeat CHS Yellowjackets, 67-62

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Sunday, December 21, 2025, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Central High School Yellow Jackets 67-62 in their final game of the Berea Holiday Classic.

The Indians were able to pull out a win on the back of a 27 point performance from senior Dawson Gilbert, who led the Tribe in scoring. Senior Tylin George posted 19, joined by fellow senion Landon Blakey who scored 14. The trio were the only Indians to score in double digits.

Gilbert and Blakey both posted double/double,s with 14 rebounds each, to lead the team in boards. The team as a whole shot 51% from the floor and 35% from three point range.

All in all, a 2-1 performance for the Indians in the Holiday Classic is quite solid, especially considering two of those wins came in close games, where the Indians had to play well down the stretch. The experience and toughness gained in Berea will no doubt help the team as the season rolls on.

Letter: Why MY corner of Adair County is BEST

Katelynn M. Molesky writes:

I guess it's my turn to jump on the bandwagon.

I'd say my little corner of the county is the best because it's just close enough to town for a quick Walmart trip here and there, but far enough that I can hide away from it all.

Out here in the Montpelier area, there's a lot to see by just driving down the back roads. There's farms full of cattle, old houses and barns being reclaimed by nature, and of course lots of houses of all shapes, sizes, and conditions. Not to mention all the trees that change color in the fall or grow all lush and green by the mid-spring to summer months.

Sure, life in town is great - it's all right there and all your neighbors are close together. But out here in the woods, you can live your life without worrying about what everybody else thinks.

And thats why there's no doubt in my mind that my corner of Adair County beats the rest!

Wilderness Medical Rescue at Pikes Ridge

From Chief Chris Taylor
Executive Director Fire-Rescue-EMS/Campbellsville Fire-Rescue

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a wilderness medical emergency in a climbing deer stand in remote area of Pikes Ridge Wildlife Management Area at 8:55amET on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

911 staff was able to obtain an accurate last known position GPS location relayed to command staff. The on-duty crew remaining at HQ started our mapping program and by the time responders arrived on the scene the scene was mapped out. Due to the remote area, we had crews access via watercraft, SXS and 4X4. Boat crews deployed rope rescue equipment and EMS equipment. A KFW officer arrived at the patient along with initial recon teams. The victim was evaluated by EMS personnel in the remote area and stabilized. The patient was then transferred via an SXS unit to the medic unit. The patient was transferred to Taylor Regional Hospital in stable condition.

Chief Taylor says, "This incident is a prime example of all agencies working together seamlessly in a remote wilderness environment for a positive outcome for the patient."

Basketball: Indians 1-1 so far in Holiday Classic

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, December 19, 2025 the Adair County Indians were defeated by Tates Creek Commodores 115-89 in the opening round of the Berea Holiday Classic.

Tates Creek shot 51% from three, which on their 57 attempts equated to 29 makes, and the Commodores shot just slightly better than 55% from the floor. However, a large majority of their field goals were from deep. Adair County shot 51% from the floor and 42% from three, but made just 8 threes. Adair County was outscored by a staggering 63 points from three point range, a fatal blow in almost any basketball contest.

In their second game of the Holiday Classic, on Saturday, December 20, the Adair County Indians bounced back to defeated the Eagles of Madison Southern (6-2) 72-67. The team was led in scoring by seniors Landon Blakey and Tylin George, with 26 and 24 respectively. Senior Dawson Gilbert and sophomore John Shehan also scored in double figures, with 12 and 10 points. Those four were the only players for the Tribe to score. Blakey posted a double-double by leading the team in rebounds, with 11, followed by Shehan with eight, and George with six.

The Indians shot 46% from the floor and 28% from three point range against Madison Southern. All in all, the Indians were able to grind out a win in a close game against a team playing on their home floor, something they will undoubtedly need to do again before this season is over.

Adair County will play their final game in the Berea Holiday Classic against Central High School (Louisville) at 1pmCT on Sunday, December 21, 2025, back at Berea Community High School, 1 Pirate Pkwy, Berea, KY
