Most new voters ditching political parties before primary

From Nick Storm

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams announced this week that, leading up to the May 19 primary election, most new voters registering in February rejected the two major parties. Of 2,606 net new registrants, nearly two-thirds registered under other political affiliations (mostly Independent).

"Independents are out-registering Republicans and Democrats, leading up to party primaries in which Independents cannot vote," Adams said. "It's no wonder that both Republican and Democratic legislators are filing bills to open our primaries to Independents."

In February, overall registration rose by 6,777 voters, while 4,171 voters were removed: 3,476 who were deceased, 327 felony convicts, 237 who moved out of state, 63 adjudged mentally incompetent, 27 who voluntarily de-registered, 23 non-citizens, and 18 duplicate registrations.

TJRH introduces da Vinci 5 Surgical System

From Stacey Biggs

T.J. Regional Health is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of the Intuitive da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system, designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive care.

The da Vinci 5 is Intuitive's most advanced and integrated platform--designed to transform surgery to enable better outcomes, efficiency, and actionable insights. The system can be used for minimally invasive surgical procedures in general surgery, urology, gynecology, bariatrics, and more. This new surgical robot replaces the da Vinci SI model in the surgery suite at T.J. Samson.

Dr. Michael Saridakis, a General Surgeon with T.J. Regional Health, states that "with the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, the robot isn't operating on its own - I control every movement from the console. The robotic arms are an extension of my hands, offering a greater range of motion, enhanced 3D visualization, and exceptional precision. This technology allows us to perform complex procedures through smaller incisions, often resulting in less pain and a smoother recovery for our patients."

Carol Perkins: Wednesday Afternoons

Previous Column: Austin (The End)

By Carol Perkins

Eight screaming, laughing, yelling children under the age of seven jumped off the church bus that picked them up at school, threw down their backpacks at the front door, and ran through the sanctuary.

"STOP running in the church," a leader said as they slowed to a fast walk.

They were headed to the choir room, where they met every Wednesday after school to sing, eat, and play at the Edmonton Baptist Church.

I had heard about their Wednesdays and prepared a dessert and joined them. Sometimes I need a happy place, and being with kids provides that for me. I sat quietly as our pastor, Brother Steve Sholar, sat at the piano and engaged the children. He did his best to keep them focused and to get them to listen and be still.

North Century Pharmacy achieves USP-800 Certification

From North Century Pharmacy

North Century Pharmacy has officially achieved USP-800 certification for its compounding laboratory, marking a significant milestone in the pharmacy's continued investment in patient safety, regulatory excellence, and advanced personalized medicine.

USP-800 sets the national standard for the safe handling of hazardous drugs, requiring extensive controls related to facility design, ventilation, staff training, equipment, and operational procedures. Compliance represents one of the most complex and resource-intensive undertakings in modern pharmacy practice, and many pharmacies choose not to pursue it due to the scope and cost involved.

For North Century Pharmacy, the decision was intentional.

"This was no small project," said Easton Bryant, PharmD. "USP-800 compliance demands infrastructure, specialized equipment, advanced ventilation and plumbing systems, detailed procedural manuals, and continuous staff education."

Mitch Barnhart retiring as UK AD: How I will remember him

By Ryan Hoots
Sports Director, UntdWeStnd.com

Mitch Barnhart is stepping away in June as the Kentucky AD after more than two decades running Kentucky athletics. That's a long time in one chair.

Barnhart's legacy at Kentucky is complicated. Some of it deserves real credit. Some of it deserves a raised eyebrow.

Start with the good. Because there's plenty of it.

He made Kentucky athletics broader. Stronger across the department as a whole. Not just basketball screaming the loudest. When he arrived in 2002 the department still felt like two big programs and a bunch of smaller ones trying to keep up. Over time that changed. Facilities improved all over campus. Olympic sports started winning. Olympians started being made. Programs that used to feel like side projects suddenly had resources.

Stephens posts win at Phoenix BFL event at Dale Hollow

From majorleaguefishing.com

Byrdstown, TN - Boater Lee Stephens of Columbia brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 21 pounds, 12 ounces, to win the Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) Presented by T-H Marine on Dale Hollow Lake on February 28, 2026. The tournament, hosted by Star Point Resort, was the first of five events of the season for the BFL Mountain Division. Stephens earned $11,100, including the lucrative $7,000 Phoenix MLF bonus, for his victory.

Stephens said he caught fish easily in practice but struggled to catch the quality bass in the 4-pound range he was after.

"I had caught a 4-pounder at a spot in practice and it was kind of a community spot, but I knew I'd probably be the first boat there, so I decided to start there and burn my (Garmin) LiveScope time," Stephens said. "The fish were moving every day and that's why I wanted to use my 'Scope time first thing. Twenty minutes in we found them up in shallow stuff and starting beating on them some. I had about 20 1/2 pounds come out of my 'Scope time.

"At that time my exact words to my co-angler were, 'We have a winning starter kit.'" Stephens added.
