Donor replaces drone lost in Chestnut Grove

From the Columbia Police Department

On April 20, 2026, the Columbia Police Department and the Campbellsville Police Department assisted the Adair County Sheriff's Office during an Active Shooter Incident that occurred on Chestnut Grove Road in Adair County.

During the incident, Columbia Chief of Police Evan Burton and Campbellsville Police Sergeant Elliott Taylor operated DJI Avata 2 drones to provide aerial observation in support of responding agencies. The Campbellsville Police Department's drone was shot down by the suspect while assisting with the operation.

Following the incident, Chief Burton contacted an anonymous Adair County resident who is a strong supporter of law enforcement and informed them of the loss. The resident generously purchased a replacement drone for the Campbellsville Police Department.

"The partnership between law enforcement agencies is vital in this profession," said Chief of Police Evan Burton. "There were multiple agencies from nearly all adjoining counties who responded to assist during this incident. I want to personally thank the Campbellsville Police Department for their support. As a token of appreciation, a replacement drone has been provided."

The Columbia Police Department extends its gratitude to all agencies that responded and assisted during the incident and recognizes the continued importance of cooperation and teamwork in protecting the communities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Place Names: How Adair Co. roads got their names

Part 5 of Mike Watson's "Place Names in Adair County" presentation, from the March 2, 2026, meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society at the Adair County Genealogy and History Research Center.

By Michael C. Watson
Adair County Genealogical Society

Buffalo Traces were our first roads. Two traces converged where Columbia was founded. The town of Columbia was laid out in 1802.

Main Street on the original plat map ran "through" the present location of the courthouse as there was no building there at the time. East Main became Jamestown Street and West Main became Greensburg Street, as they each led in the direction of those towns.

Market Street was the North-South Street and South Market became Burkesville Street and North Market became Campbellsville Street.

Take into consideration Market and Main as names were dropped over several decades. Greensburg and Burkesville existed when Columbia was founded, Jamestown and Campbellsville came later.

City Hall was one stop during local government tour

By Katelynn M. Molesky

On Friday, April 24, Adair County's fifth grade students had the chance to learn about the county and city government, thanks to an organized tour that was set up by Adair County 4-H.

The grade was split into four groups and rotated between several notable locations, where they got to meet with officials from the city and county, as well as learn about the different jobs done to keep operations running smoothly.

One of these locations was the Columbia City Hall. There they met with Mayor Pamela Hoots, who greeted the students and answered all of their questions with enthusiasm.

Statement from Sheriff Gary Roy

By Sheriff Gary Roy
Adair County Sheriff's Office

It's been an extremely busy last 2 weeks and I wanted to bring the public up to speed on the events that have transpired here in Adair County that my office has been involved with.

On April 14th we had a horrible logging accident in Fairplay area that resulted in the loss of life of an Adair County man. Some of you may know few of the details on that and who was there. It was requested that an investigation be done on the accident. Due to what I felt was a conflict of interest, with one of the people involved being the son of a former Adair County Deputy Sheriff and him also being a member of my church, we attempted to turn the case over to Kentucky State Police. Our office was notified on April 17th by Sgt. Billy Gregory that KSP would not be investigating the case, due to it being accidental. Although it's a tragic loss of life we do not feel like there was anything intentional or any foul play is involved.

Monday April 20th we had the tragic events that happened in Southern Adair County on Chestnut Grove Rd. and in Kelleyville/Mt. Carmel area, where 4 Adair Countians lost their lives. We responded to Chestnut Grove Rd. to a male being shot. Upon arriving Deputy Emily Wall was met with gunfire, Wall was able to exit her car and return fire. She was able to get a civilian safely to cover behind her patrol car. Even though Wall's patrol car was struck 24 times, Praise God neither Wall nor the civilian was hurt. The gunman continued to sporadically shoot at officers. KSP SRT team arrived on scene and took control of the scene. After negotiations failed, the gunman was shot and killed by KSP SRT. During the standoff it was learned that the gunman had killed his mother and his aunt.

I want to take this time to personally thank the Adair County Deputies, Columbia Police Department, Kentucky State Police, Adair County 911 dispatch, Adair EMS, Adair County Emergency management, Breeding Fire Department, Adair County Coroners Office, Air Medical, all the neighboring counties that had officers respond to help us in any way. If you brought food/water or offered to bring anything or assist in any way Thank You. But most importantly if you prayed, thank you so much because I truly believe your prayers brought us all home safely to our families that night.

As you are aware April 23rd we had a bomb threat at Adair County Elementary School. I had two resource officers on scene as well as myself, additional deputies, Columbia Police Department and Kentucky State Police. Deputy Mark Harris is leading the investigation. We will continue to follow up on additional information as we work with our school partners and law enforcement agencies.

I love you Adair County and God bless you all!
Sheriff Gary Roy

Lindsey Wilson University Singers at CUMC April 28

By Shelby Burton

The Lindsey Wilson University Singers will join forces with the Somerset Big Band for an evening celebrating the timeless music of the Great American Songbook in a free performance at 7pmCT on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville St., Columbia.

The Somerset Big Band, founded in 2016, is a 21-member ensemble made up of professional musicians and community members from central and eastern Kentucky. The group performs traditional big band jazz and new compositions at festivals, community events and concerts throughout the region.

At the April 28 concert, the 35-member Lindsey Wilson Singers will perform a mix of songs with jazz-infused harmonies from the American Songbook, which generally refers to popular songs and jazz compositions from the 1920s through the 1960s.

Some of the selections scheduled to be performed include Fisher, Shay and Goodwin's "When You're Smilin'," Bart Howard's "Fly Me to the Moon," and Jones and Kahn's "What'll I Do."

The concert at Columbia United Methodist Church will also serve as a preview for the Lindsey Wilson Singers as they prepare for their annual spring tour. Following the university's spring commencement on May 1-2, 2026, the Lindsey Wilson Singers will perform in Michigan, with stops in Holland and Mackinac Island.

Letter: American Bittern

Beth Grant writes:
Today is April 24, 2026. How can this bird have been spotted on April 26, 2026?
Beth, Thanks for catching the error. We'd like to say that "future birding" is the hot new hobby, but the reality is that those reports were for April 21, and for some reason, April dates in 2026 have been a challenge to type correctly. We'll get the article corrected. -Pen

A message from Superintendent Faulkner

By Jason C. Faulkner, Superintendent
Adair County Public Schools

I want to take a few moments to clarify and address some of the concerns and criticisms regarding the handling of yesterday's bomb threat.

First, I want to acknowledge that situations like this create a great deal of worry for our families and staff. That concern is completely understandable. Unfortunately, in today's climate, schools across the country must be prepared to respond to these types of threats. For that reason, we have established safety plans and procedures that are designed to ensure a swift, coordinated, and effective response in situations like this.

To provide full transparency, I would like to provide an exact timeline of how yesterday's events transpired. Yesterday at 1:20, l was made aware of a phone call received at Adair County Elementary School warning of a pipe bomb that was placed on the outside of the school building. ACES immediately initiated their lockdown procedures, and an emergency call was placed to 911, informing them of our situation. As an extra precaution, all schools on the Adair County campus were placed on immediate lockdown. I was in contact with our Columbia Chief of Police, members of the Sheriff's Department, and members of the state police, who all informed me that they were making a coordinated effort to do a sweep of the entire campus to make sure that everything was safe. Employees of the board of education were on site at the school, aiding first responders in securing the area.

LWU honors students, staff who Live, Learn, Lead

By Venus Popplewell

Ten Lindsey Wilson University undergraduates and one longtime staff member were honored on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, for their influential leadership skills and contributions to the Lindsey Wilson community. The eleven individuals were recognized at the 18th-annual L3 Student Leadership Banquet, held in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.

Former Kentucky Lieutenant Governor and member of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees, Jenean Hampton, delivered the keynote address telling the students to focus on the mission.

"When you focus on the mission, it takes sexism out of the loop, it takes racism out of the loop and the energy is directed toward everyone doing their part and getting the job done," Hampton said. "Focusing on the mission takes a lot of the drama and problems out of the equation."
