Great Wooded South XI: Going Out West, Part V

Catch up with the previous column: Great Wooded South X: Going Out West, Part IV
Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series

By Billy Joe Fudge

So, upon rolling through the security fencing surrounding Chino State Prison, our bus driver headed West. We crossed the San Jose Hills and voila, there, somewhere through the haze and smog to the West was Los Angeles. Or so we were told.

Before you could say, "Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show", we were on the Ventura Freeway and I was looking for the Slauson Cutoff!

Now the 101/Ventura Freeway/Hollywood Freeway was quite impressive. Los Angeles was a foreign metropolis to most of as we made our way North. Seeing the landmarks I had heard of my entire life, including the famous Hollywood sign, was a treat for sure.

Our bus driver was a retired driver who was brought into service to drive Forest Service charters. He was a really good guy, but before the trip was over that night, we all agreed that he should have remained retired.

Travel: Don't forget the Supreme Court

2026-06-13 - Washington, D.C. - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
Veronica writes, "While many visitors to DC see the monuments and Congress, they often forget to visit the Supreme Court. It is free, open to the public on posted hours. And on certain days and times you can try to get on the free lecture/tour which takes place in the actual courtroom! (Sorry no pictures are given here as electronic devices are prohibited in the courtroom.) So we were able to totally focus on the lecture and learn about the history of the Court and bask in the knowledge that we were sitting where great history has been made. They even let us exit down those front steps on that day! Usually they are closed and visitors are not able to go up or down those steps.

It is a free activity, and one that doesn't take much more than an hour to see most of the exhibits in the Court building. Highly recommend."

KY sees unusual drop in Other voter registrations

From Nick Storm

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that in May, Republicans continued to increase their share of Kentucky voters; but "Other" voters, including Independents, fell for the first time since February 2025, when a purge removed over 230,000 voters of all political affiliations. The last month when Republicans rose while Independents declined was April 2020.

"After countless months in which Independents have out-registered Republicans and Democrats combined, this is a noteworthy change," Adams said. "Time will tell whether this is a momentary blip and Kentucky's political center will continue to grow."

Net registration rose by 104, with 4,633 voters removed: 3,883 who were deceased, 611 felony convicts, 64 adjudged mentally incompetent, 42 duplicate registrations, 25 who voluntarily de-registered and 8 who moved out of state.

Arnold Family Trip to Washington, DC

By Veronica Arnold

Our family took a trip to Washington, DC, this summer. This trip was part of a family tradition where grandparents take their grandkids on a special trip when they reach 10-11 years old.

The grandkid gets to select a place to visit or thing to experience. Other grandkids have chosen Universal Studios to see the Harry Potter World, one shared her trip with another grandkid and they went on a cruise in Alaska. This year was my youngest, the last grandkid's (for now) turn to select a place to visit. Her grandma had sent her a book for Christmas featuring US cities and places to see across the USA. After being told that Hawaii was a bit of a reach she pivoted and chose to go to Washington, DC. She knew her Aunt Signe lived outside of DC in Maryland and would be more enjoyable for everyone if she took that route.

This was our civics education launch pad. Knowing she would go to Washington, DC, we started looking at local and state government too. Isolde helped me, Veronica, in my political campaign for local office. Which also led to many discussions with state law makers. We were treated very well by our state representative Mrs. Amy Neighbors with the best Capitol tour in Frankfort. We began writing letters to our federal representatives in DC, hoping they too would give us such inside looks like Mrs. Neighbors did. While I did most of the letter writing, Isolde was with me during each step.

Travel: Meeting the Park Ranger at the Washington Monument

2026-06-12 - Washington, D.C. - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
Veronica writes, "The National Park service has Park rangers all over these exhibits and they are very knowledgeable. Besides being kind to guests and answering all kinds of questions, they love to engage in discussions about national parks. I made sure we all talked about Mammoth Cave and other parks in KY! These rangers were pleased how much we appreciate the National Park Service in KY!"

Baseball: Indians finish season 18-20

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians ended the season with a final record of 18-20. The team wrapped up action in the 5th Region Tournament with a 3-4 loss to Nelson County, who lost 5-7 in the following round to the eventual region champions, LaRue County. This was the second straight Indians' season ended by Nelson County in the 5th Region Tournament, after last year's 4 to 10 outing.

Jasper Kemp started on the mound for the Indians, going six innings, giving up four earned runs, walking three batters and striking out six, all on 94 pitches. Kemp would be the only pitcher for the Tribe to enter the stat book.

The Indians recorded a total of four hits, one each by Jackson Sinclair, Bryce Russell, Alex Martin, and Dax Conn. Martin would post the best batting average for the team on the day, at .500, due to gaining two walks in addition to his one hit. Carson Darnell also had a pair. Russell also lead the team in stolen bases, with three, and Kemp and Darnell posted two each.

The Indians baseball team, much like the Lady Indians softball squad, has reason to hope for the future. Just one senior saw action in the final game of the year, so much of the squad will return.

Letter: Who will take song to Number One?

Donna Rieder writes:
I've listened to Dr. Ben Arnold's song, "Yesterday's Pain", several times, and it is really quite good. It has every element needed for a perfect song, full of emotion and wisdom, and really hits home.

I fully expect someone to jump on the chance to record it and look forward to seeing who takes it to Number One on the Country music charts! Great job, Ben, and good luck!

Huge Spirit of 76 Celebration in Albany

By Al Cross
Clinton County Community Foundation

Seventy Six, KY - The 250-year history of the United States of America has been written not only in places like Philadelphia, New York and Washington, but in every community in the country - including the historic community of Seventy Six in Southern Kentucky.

So, where better to celebrate the spirit of 1776 than the only place in America named Seventy Six?

That's the question being asked - and the invitation being issued - by folks in Clinton County, who are staging what looks to be the area's biggest celebration ever and one of the more interesting celebrations of America's semi-quincentennial on the weekend of July 3 and 4, 2026.

The schedule includes free concerts by country, bluegrass and Americana music stars; a huge fireworks show; golf tournaments, a 7.6-mile race, and historical and patriotic presentations that will highlight the contributions of Seventy Six and the county to the history of Kentucky and the nation.

ACSO: Columbia man arrested for false hostage report

From Sheriff Gary Roy
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, deputies with the Adair County Sheriff's Office responded to 1253 Campbellsville Road, where a male subject had called a family member and stated people were being held hostage at this location.

Upon arrival, deputies checked the residence and found that no one was being held hostage. Deputies made contact with a subject outside the residence and placed him under arrest for the false report and alcohol intoxication. As deputies were taking the man to the patrol car, he kicked one of the deputies, resulting in an additional assault charge.

Dukes Returns Home to Lead the Indians' Football

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

When Cameron Dukes was officially introduced as the new head football coach at Adair County High School, his impressive resume was already well known. The Shepherdsville native was a three-time NAIA All-American quarterback at Lindsey Wilson University, helped lead the Blue Raiders to a national championship, earned Academic All-American honors and later played professionally in the Canadian Football League.

But during his introduction, Dukes made it clear that what drew him to the position was not simply football. It was Columbia itself. "Just coming back to Columbia, I got here in 2016 and just have grown to love this place, the community, just everything about it," Dukes said. "It feels like home as soon as you get here."

Sumitomo employees approved for training and development

From Scottie Ellis/Brandon Mattingly

Frankfort, KY - On June 11, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear highlighted that Team Kentucky will provide workforce training and skills development to over 7,400 Kentuckians. This continued investment in our state workforce is thanks to support provided through the Bluegrass State Skills Corp. (BSSC), which oversees programs attached to the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development that help private-sector businesses establish industry-specific training initiatives.

Approvals from last month's meeting included workforce training support for over 960 employees at Baptist Health Deaconess in Madisonville. Other approvals include 634 trainees for Toyotetsu Mid America in Owensboro, 300 employees at RFC in Shelbyville, 286 workers at Algood Food Co. in Louisville, 264 trainees at Grupo Antolin Kentucky in Hopkinsville, 257 employees at Commonwealth Cooperage in Morehead, and 232 employees at Sumitomo Electrical Wiring Systems in Edmonton, among others.

Travel: Return To Candy Cliffs (2 of 2)

2026-06-12 - Leeds, Utah - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
Robert writes, "We hiked the 'additional' 1/2 mile to this second observation point. In many ways it exceeds the first; mostly the swirls seem to be more prominent. The navigator stayed mostly at a higher level, and ultimately I scrambled my way down to this spot.

What looked like an easy hike, wasn't! In my youthful days I would have been crawling all over this place. I imagine sticking around for sunset would have yielded some spectacular views, but not for these Kentuckians...we had a little trouble (in full daylight) re-locating the 'goat path of a trail' that drops down into this area. That, combined with the hard-to-find trail at the top, made the decision to leave now the only wisely available choice.

Sadly, this gem of an area is often overlooked due to the National Parks, Zion and Bryce Canyon being the main destination of vacationers for this area. Running into another couple on this trail, we all agreed that this place is worthy of some kinda Park status. Road improvements, bigger parking area at the trail head and marked trails would draw more visitors to it. But...then again, does Utah need any more attractions?

Off in the far distance is the town of St. George."
