Snow-Go once again... Mike shares a SNOW and weather piece from 2021 that might just fit once more... By Mike Watson The weather outside is frightful one more time, and there may well be more in the offing. We in Kentucky have had plenty of snow and ice for one winter. Not a record, but cabin fever and the like seem to have overtaken so many residents that open rebellion is in the mind of many. Last evening, Sunday, in the space of twenty minutes roads and walks went from clear, or relatively clear, to white. By morning two and one-half inches covered our surfaces. I had fought the notion of a short historical sketch on past snowfalls, but here are a few weather notes assembled from near-forty years of research into Adair County's past: The first week of January 1886 brought a very cold snap, with temperatures in the region dropping well below zero. Stanford, in Lincoln County, officially recorded a week-long low of 24 below zero. Rockcastle County registered 28 below. Adair County was likely in the same temperature range. School Board report: students, arts programs, awards By Mig Feuser, Adair Progress A full slate of student achievements and staff recognitions highlighted last week's Adair County School Board meeting, as Superintendent Jason Faulkner opened the evening by pointing to what he called strong momentum heading into the spring semester. "We've got a lot of students here to recognize, a lot of accomplishments," Faulkner said, adding that the district was excited to celebrate recent successes across academics, athletics, and the arts. Lessons learned from UP winters In response to How are you coping with our worst weather? By Donna Rieder I have fond memories of spending my teen and young adult years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There was a K-mart across the street from our house, and after a few snows, the plows would push the snow up to the bottom of the K-Mart sign, a good 30' off the ground! We had a sizable back yard, and Daddy would snow-blow the whole middle of it after each snow, and every night he'd let the hose run slow overnight. Then all of us kids would have fun ice-skating after school until suppertime. We'd also have fun sliding down the snowbanks on our saucers. Living in the UP taught me many practical ways of dealing with the weather, which still serve me well. Dressing in layers and having warm boots with good lugs was important, as was owning a pair of good sunglasses to avoid snow-blindness, a condition where a solid white world and bright sun can leave you unable to see when you came indoors. Electricians are needed for the housing industry Ten thousand. That's how many electricians are needed to take jobs that offer up to a six-figure salary and full benefits. And, there is an annual shortfall in the electrician workforce of at least 3,000. With the global data center construction market booming, driven by AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure demands, more than $200 billion is expected to be spent on data center development globally, with the U.S. as a major hub. How are you coping with our worst weather? One week ago, Friday, January 23, 2026, we were in the frantic, final hours of preparation for what was predicted to be our region's worst winter storm. Each day since then we have dealt with different dangers and challenges - power, water, dropping limbs and trees, solid ice that can't melt. Thank you to every single man and woman who has a job in service of rescue and safety - if you've had to work outside, you have our deepest gratitude. Today, Friday, January 30th, we continue to battle the elements of frozen ice with more snowflakes falling as this is written. Please Feed the Birds! By Wendy Butler Burt Now that power is back on and the pantry is re-stocked, please turn your attention to the birds: THEY'RE HUNGRY! With thick ice covering the ground and still encasing every twig, birds are having a very difficult time finding sufficient food to sustain them through this very cold weather. I've been going through pounds & pounds of birdseed and suet cakes, always feeding at least twice a day because of the harsh conditions. And I'm being rewarded with literally hundreds of hungry birds gobbling up the seed. In addition to my regulars cardinals, blue jays, various woodpeckers, chickadees, white-throated sparrows, titmice, purple finches, chipping sparrows, song sparrows, doves, etc., my feeding has been bringing in several species that I seldom see at my feeders (Eastern towees, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, yellow-rumpled warblers, flickers, fox sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, crows, etc.). I've had to replenish my seed supply and found yesterday that, although birdseed now is in high demand in Adair County, there's plenty available. I use several different kinds of birdseed and found what I needed at Day & Day Feed and Pet (they formulate and sell a birdseed mix specifically developed for birds occurring in Adair County), Tractor Supply (wide range of birdseed, including bags of cracked corn being marketed for livestock & chickens), Ace Hardware, and others. So, please help our birds survive this challenging weather. Feed them often! Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2026-01-30 10:24:00 | Comments Last 10 Posted Obituaries:
