A thank you from Donna Rieder

Comments re: Letter: Stories/Pictures from Donna Rieder

By Donna Rieder

I just want to say "thank you" to Vicki Brock and all the others who spoke so kindly about my recent article on CM. Writing and photography are both things I have always enjoyed, and I appreciate CM allowing me to share over the years. I started writing a book years ago and will be offering parts of it on CM soon.

In the meantime, anyone who is interested can enjoy all the things that happen on my farm by following my Clifty Creek Farm Facebook page. Spring is always a busy time with gardens to plant, beehives to tend to, and of course, my favorite time of year: Kidding Season! I'm expecting 7 of my does (female goats) to kid beginning in April, and although it can be hectic and stressful, it's also a time of wonder as those brand-new lives enter the world full of energy and curiosity. Goat Yoga, anyone?

I'll be offering my annual goat care seminar the first weekend in May, will be offering farm tours by appointment, and hope to be adding more events as infrastructure is completed. And as always, I welcome anyone who wants to work in exchange for learning new skills; there's always something that needs attention, and at 69 years young, I always appreciate a helping hand!

Clifty Creek Farm is located at 3190 White Oak Church Rd, Russell Springs, KY. You can reach Donna by email at cliftycreekkikos@aol.com.

Quote and verse for Monday, February 2, 2026

A quote for this cold, cold Monday comes from Kentucky speaker Liz Curtis Higgs in her podcast, Grace Every Monday:
"Welcome to February, the second day, Groundhog Day, looking like six more weeks of winter. It's also Feast Day, Candlemas, Sled Dog Day, and Tater Tot Day." Her verse for the day to help us hang on and be brave - "Psalm 21:34 - be strong and take heart all you who hope in the Lord."

Snow and ice fortress complete with a window

2026-02-02 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by April Yurcevic Shepperd.
A play place was discovered by April Shepperd over the weekend in the Save-a-Lot parking lot on the corner on Burkesville and Guardian Streets in downtown Columbia. Neighborhood engineers created a fortress, complete with a window/skylight, from the huge pile of icy snow that had been pushed away so shoppers could get into the parking lot. Looking inside, you can also see the concrete wall art done by Vonnie Kolbenschlag a few years ago.

If anyone can share the names and/or pictures of the building in progress, Columbia Magazine would happily add them here with April's story. Thanks to all for the smiles!

Snow architecture in winter storm Fern's aftermath

The Columbia writer/photographer April Shepperd couldn't resist documenting an architectural marvel discovered in the parking lot of Save-a-Lot Grocery store downtown.

Her photos linked to this note show how neighborhood kids took a huge pile of snow that had been pushed into the corner on Burkesville and Guardian Streets, that hasn't had a chance to melt and created a fantastic play space.

April says, "Thank you to the talented, albeit cold, engineers who braved the wicked temperatures to bring joy to our community!"

A unique architectural parking lot marvel

2026-02-02 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by April Yurcevic Shepperd.
Winter storm Fern brought snow, covered by ice, covered by more snow, and this picture is an example of the creative responses. First responders move the snow and ice as quickly as possible, pushing it up into piles to get it out of the way. Neighborhood kids took this huge pile of snow in the corner on Burkesville and Guardian Streets that hasn't had a chance to melt and created a fantastic play space. April, pictured in the entry way, says, "Thank you to the talented, albeit cold, engineers who braved the wicked temperatures to bring joy to our community!"

From Broadway bruises to fight in Fayetteville

By Ryan Hoots
Sports Director, UntdWeStnd.com

Fayetteville, AR - Kentucky left Nashville humiliated on Tuesday night. Not frustrated, not annoyed, but completely and utterly humiliated.

Vanderbilt didn't just beat Kentucky; they exposed them. They took away their rhythm and their confidence. The loss shifted the discussion completely, even for the most hopeful Kentucky fan.

Losses like that often linger. They can turn one bad night into a bad week and sometimes even derail an entire season.

Kentucky's 85-77 victory in Fayetteville on Saturday was important because they prevented that from happening. Even the most composed teams are devoured by Bud Walton Arena. Visiting teams may quickly find themselves in an avalanche of negativity as the noise level rises and the pressure increases.

Snow-Go once again...

Mike shares a SNOW and weather piece from 2021 that might just fit once more...

By Mike Watson

The weather outside is frightful one more time, and there may well be more in the offing. We in Kentucky have had plenty of snow and ice for one winter. Not a record, but cabin fever and the like seem to have overtaken so many residents that open rebellion is in the mind of many. Last evening, Sunday, in the space of twenty minutes roads and walks went from clear, or relatively clear, to white. By morning two and one-half inches covered our surfaces.

I had fought the notion of a short historical sketch on past snowfalls, but here are a few weather notes assembled from near-forty years of research into Adair County's past:

The first week of January 1886 brought a very cold snap, with temperatures in the region dropping well below zero. Stanford, in Lincoln County, officially recorded a week-long low of 24 below zero. Rockcastle County registered 28 below. Adair County was likely in the same temperature range.

By Mig Feuser, Adair Progress

A full slate of student achievements and staff recognitions highlighted last week's Adair County School Board meeting, as Superintendent Jason Faulkner opened the evening by pointing to what he called strong momentum heading into the spring semester.

"We've got a lot of students here to recognize, a lot of accomplishments," Faulkner said, adding that the district was excited to celebrate recent successes across academics, athletics, and the arts.

Lessons learned from UP winters

In response to How are you coping with our worst weather?

By Donna Rieder

I have fond memories of spending my teen and young adult years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There was a K-mart across the street from our house, and after a few snows, the plows would push the snow up to the bottom of the K-Mart sign, a good 30' off the ground! We had a sizable back yard, and Daddy would snow-blow the whole middle of it after each snow, and every night he'd let the hose run slow overnight. Then all of us kids would have fun ice-skating after school until suppertime. We'd also have fun sliding down the snowbanks on our saucers.

Living in the UP taught me many practical ways of dealing with the weather, which still serve me well. Dressing in layers and having warm boots with good lugs was important, as was owning a pair of good sunglasses to avoid snow-blindness, a condition where a solid white world and bright sun can leave you unable to see when you came indoors.
