Letter: Praise for The Mother Load/The Mother Load Name withheld by request I appreciate so very much these two articles. Both touch a place in my heart which I have never been able to articulate. My life as a mother was not anything I ever expected or imagined due to the depression my daughter suffered from, beginning as a small child. As we learned, it was genetic. When you hear the statement "suffers with depression", believe it. Those with depression and/or mental illness, truly suffer! As a mother of a chid with depression and co-existing mental illness, little did I know how my life would be impacted as it has, and the lives of our entire family. All things a mother does felt unrelenting and magnified. To this day as our daughter is now middle aged, it continues in so many ways despite efforts and years of learning to find ways transfer the burden off us. The natural burdens of a mother as described in "The Mother Load", don't just stop as the phone calls still come in. Even though a mother may not act on remedying the needs for her family, they are occupying her mind. And, in our case where we have had to raise a grandchild due the situation, it continues to impact future generations, and the "mother load" still grows. I also sadly comprehend Donna Rieder's decision not to have children. My grandchild already states that idea in her future for the same reasons. Being a mother is not for the faint in heart. If someone you know suffers beyond the typical situational depression of being a mother, help them find the help they need! Tebbs Bend Park Day Cleanup 2026 is April 11 From Mike Watson For 30 years, thousands of volunteers have gathered at battlefields and historic sites across the nation to participate in the Trust's Park Day clean-up effort. Including Boy and Girl Scouts, Rotarians, Lions Club members, church groups, ROTC units, youth groups, Wounded Warrior groups and many others, more than 450,000 cumulative hours of labor have been contributed to projects large and small to keep our nation's heritage not only preserved, but also pristine. Each year, thousands of history enthusiasts, community-minded citizens, families, Boy and Girl Scouts, ROTC units and more come together in an effort to help keep our nation's heritage not only preserved, but pristine. Activities are chosen by each participating site and can include building trails, raking leaves, painting signs, putting up fences and contributing to site interpretation. In addition to the satisfaction that volunteer work brings, participants receive official Park Day swag and may have the chance to hear a local historian describe people and events of the past at their site. Park Day can also be used to fulfill the service requirements associated with scout groups, student organizations, training corps programs, many school systems, and more. Park Day allows the American Battlefield Trust to cast a spotlight on beloved American landscapes nationwide. Projects will keep historic sites and battlefields clean, open and accessible for the enjoyment of all -- this year, Park Day projects included painting signs, garden maintenance, trash and leaf removal, marker clean-up, trail and fence building and more! Join us at 9amCT/10amET on April 11, 2026, at the Tebbs Bend Toll House, 327 Tebbs Bend Road, Campbellsville, KY, for the 30th annual Park Day. LWU Department of Theatre to present Heroines April 9-10 By Duane Bonifer The Lindsey Wilson University Department of Theatre will retell parts of one of the classic works of literature. The LWU Department of Theatre will present Heroines on April 9-10, 2026, at V.P. Henry Auditorium. The production, which is directed by Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, is free and open to the public. Both performances begin at 7pmCT. Based on The Heroides by first-century Roman poet Ovid, Heroines features contemporary monologues told through a series of letters from the aggrieved women of classical mythology to the lovers who abandoned them. Heroines will feel a bit like five one-act plays. That's because it will be presented in five monologues, each of which explores a range of themes that include betrayal, love, longing and neglect. While the monologues will be presented in modern settings, Brock said they do not lose the eternal messages Ovid gave them when he wrote them more than 2,500 years ago. Praise for The Mother Load Comments re: Tommy Druen: The Mother Load By Donna Rieder I just wanted to praise Tommy Druen for his excellent article, "The Mother Load." Although October is officially Depression Awareness Month, it's a topic that everyone should be aware of. Depression is REAL. Both my mother and maternal grandmother struggled with depression, and my siblings and I suffered as a result. My mother's "cure" was Valium and Scotch, and she'd "medicate" herself as soon as us kids left for school. By the time we got home, she'd be passed out next to an ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts, empty Scotch bottle nearby. God help us if we woke her up. We learned to tiptoe and whisper, and stay in our rooms, because if we woke her up she'd go into a fit of uncontrolled rage, and all three of us would get a beating, regardless of who woke her. Depression takes a toll, not just on the person who is depressed, but also on everyone else living in the house. My brother drowned when I was 15, and it was a questionable situation. My sister left home at 17, and when I turned 17, I left home as well. Dad was in the military and was gone for weeks on end, so us kids did what we had to do: get out, any way we could. I struggled with depression during my teen years as well, and although I think it was due mostly to the situation at home, I was determined to break the cycle. Students learn the art of dining in the business world By Duane Bonifer Campbellsville, KY - About four dozen Lindsey WIlson University students spent an evening learning valuable lessons to be successful in the business world, but it didn't involve financial modeling, group projects or strategic planning. Instead, they spent the evening at Swan's Landing in Taylor County, practicing proper business dinner etiquette and the art of networking. "Tonight is about something that often goes unspoken but is always noticed -- how you show up," said Lindsey Wilson School of Business and Communication Dean Benson Sexton '04. "Talent will get you in the room, but it's professionalism that keeps you in the room. Your resume will open the door, but your presence will determine what happens next." The event was held by the Lindsey Wilson School of Business and Communication and sponsored by Yum! Brands, the Lori Riddle Eberenz '02 Family and the Kevin A. Thompson Family. The business dinner etiquette event, which was attended mostly by seniors who will graduate in May, was held to help students prepare for moments in the professional world that can often lead to new opportunities and successes. Letter: Easy way to track hummingbird migration Comments re: Time to hang the hummingbird feeders By Gene Burton I have had my feeders out for almost a week. I use the website hummingbirdcentral.com to track the migration. I noticed a big movement in late March coming out of the south. However, I have not seen any yet per the weblink I provided. If you open it and scroll to the 2026 migration map, you can see the date someone reported a sighting. Locally, there have been reports of Breeding, Elk Horn, Russell Springs and Edmonton. All were repoted in very recent times. In 2025, I reported on 4/4/25. Although I have no birds yet, the feeders are out and ready. Typically, all I have is migrators this early in the season. My "resident" birds are typically here late April to early May, but I still feed the migrators moving through. Tommy Druen: The Mother Load Previous Column: A well-crafted life By Tommy Druen With the exception of news programming, The Tonight Show holds the distinction as the longest continuously aired program in the history of American network television. After more than 70 years on the air, its longevity is impressive but not mysterious. The show perfected the deceptively simple formula of comedic monologue, celebrity interviews, and musical guests that proved so effective it became the blueprint for virtually every late-night talk show that followed. Some imitators thrived. David Letterman built an empire on the model. Arsenio Hall briefly turned late-night on its head in the early '90s. Others crashed magnificently. Chevy Chase and Magic Johnson each hosted shows that seemingly failed before the credits ran. The Tonight Show's creator and original host was a young man named Steve Allen, whose resume defies easy summary. Comedian, radio personality, author, musician, composer, television pioneer. Entire books have been written about his contributions to the medium, but one of my favorite bits he invented was the "Man on the Street" interview. Allen would simply step outside the studio and question ordinary New Yorkers, often with absurd or leading prompts designed to produce hilarious answers. The charm was its apparent spontaneity. Whether it was genuine hardly mattered. The format proved durable, resurfacing decades later in Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" segments and Billy Eichner's frantic "Billy on the Street." A few years back, Jimmy Kimmel adapted the concept for a Father's Day segment called "Pop Quiz." The premise was beautifully simple: fathers were asked basic questions about their own children. They struggled magnificently. Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2026-04-05 22:24:15 | Comments | See topic Tommy Druen
