Congratulations to Adair Co. FFA Land Judging Team! Continuing a Tradition of Success: Adair County FFA Land Judging Team Advances to State From Gabrielle Barnes Agriculture Educator/FFA Advisor On Thursday, October 16, 2025, the Adair County FFA placed second in the Lake Cumberland Regional Land Judging Contest. Team members were Ethan Wooten, Addie Baker, Isabella Harvey, and Katie Kean. All team members performed exceptionally, and Isabella Harvey was the highest scoring individual of the entire contest. The contest requires students to evaluate land for use in agricultural production. They have to estimate slope, determine the multiple soil characteristics, identify the land capability class, select the proper conservation measures, and choose the limitations for each of four sites. The goal of this hands-on career development event is to assist in preparing students for a career in agricultural production. The team's success in this contest is a testament to the work the students put in to prepare. It took countless hours of hiking and studying to perform at this level. They have spent weeks walking slopes, evaluating site cards, and finding sinkholes. Safe Halloween a Full Circle Moment for Lindsey alums Victor Tellis, Jr., had an eventful career at Lindsey Wilson in the 1990s. The Louisville native was recruited to play basketball and soccer, and Tellis says he chose Lindsey over some bigger regional schools because he fell in love with the small campus and family atmosphere he found there. In addition to studies and athletics, Tellis served as an RA and served as Junior Class President, where a Halloween tradition was born. Victor says, "We were in a council meeting thinking of things to engage the Columbia community. I remembered as a kid getting my candy stolen from me when I was younger. That was a vivid memory for me. So I wanted kids to be safe while trick or treating. I know they go in their neighborhood, but I suggested we have a 'Safe Halloween For Kids' on campus. I printed out alot of flyers. I played sports, so I enlisted the sport teams to help and decorate their doors so kids could know which doors to visit. My fellow RAs volunteered to escort the kids through their halls." "Safe Halloween," which is sponsored by the university's Office of Residence Life, has mushroomed from attracting a few dozen guests in its early years to hosting hundreds of guests annually from throughout the region. On Friday, October 31, 2025, the university will hold its 31st annual "Safe Halloween." The campus is preparing to be invaded by hundreds of ghosts, goblins, superheroes, princesses and cartoon characters. Victor says, "Everytime I hear it's still going on today, it make my eyes well up. I believe I left campus and the community better than when I got there." Victor and his wife Sharilyn, who also graduated from Lindsey Wilson, visit campus whenever they get a chance. Victor was in town in September for the Brady Button Memorial Golf Scramble in September, and he and Sharilyn plan to bring their grandkids to this year's Safe Halloween. He says, "It's a full circle moment for us, that puts things in perspective. I'm looking forward to sharing a tradition with my grandkids that I started. Hope they think PEE PAW is cool." Football: Indians face Wildcats at Edmonson Co By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer The Adair County Indians Football Team returns to action on Friday, October 17, 2025, as they go on the road against the Edmonson County Wildcats (2-6). The Indians should be well-rested coming off the bye week. They have not played a game since their October 3 meeting with Hart County. However, the same can be said about Edmonson County, as their last game was an October 3rd 35-12 loss to LaRue County. In their last game, the Wildcats struggled to stop the run, giving up 290 rushing yards to the Hawks of LaRue County. In that same game, Edmonson County saw most of their offensive production come from the ground game, with 152 total rushing yards. They were led by senior Colten White, with 10 carries for 52 yards. The Indians will need to be on the lookout for White on the field on Friday. If you are available, make the trip and cheer them on! Kickoff is scheduled for 7pmCT on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Edmonson County High School, 220 Wildcat Way, Brownsville, KY. 2025-10-17 13:59:44 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Reciprocal fishing and hunting agreements back in place Frankfort, KY - Anglers and waterfowl hunters can once again use their Kentucky resident licenses to fish or hunt certain waters shared with neighboring states, as new reciprocal agreements with several bordering states took effect Thursday, October 16, 2025, following adjournment of the Kentucky Interim Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Energy. Kentucky finalized the agreements with several bordering states to allow each state's resident anglers and waterfowl hunters to utilize these shared waters using the license from their home state. "We're blessed here in the Commonwealth - and across our neighboring states - with so many great places to get out and enjoy the outdoors," Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Commissioner Rich Storm said. "We're extremely proud of these new agreements because they make it easier for our valued license holders and our neighbors to get out there and take advantage of all the opportunities our shared waters have to offer." Reciprocal fishing agreements include the Ohio River, Mississippi River, Kentucky Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, the Big South Fork of Cumberland River, the Big Sandy River and Tug Fork River. Reciprocal waterfowl hunting agreements include the Big Sandy and Tug Fork rivers bordering West Virginia, and the section of the Ohio River bordering Indiana and Ohio. Letter: Bearwallow Cemetery maintenance By Larry Burton My name is Larry Burton. Not too long ago. I posted a request asking people to donate to bear wallow for the upkeep of our ancestral grounds. The cemetery is the last contact for the people that we love and admire. It gave me great pride to see that people have been donating to the cemetery. My family has been on Burton Ridge since the very beginning of the Burtons immigration to their new home. My great grandfather donated the land for Purdue Church and the school located behind the church. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who feel as I do that our ancestors deserve to have their resting place kept up. I would like to thank Danny Goodin for his resolve in taking care of Bearwallow. I would like to request that the local funeral homes place the cemeteries as an option for donations. Maybe they have done that already if not, please do. Thank you once again, -Larry 2025-10-17 11:12:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University students in Mahalia Cain's human services and counseling classes got the opportunity to study substance abuse from a different perspective on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Students in Cain's "Substance Abuse" and "Abnormal Psychology" classes met with Columbia-Adair County law enforcement officials to learn how the departments deal with people who are suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. To better illustrate the topic, members of the Columbia Police Department brought the department's Substance Abuse Education trailer to campus, which gave students additional insight into issues law-enforcement officers often face. Encouragement: You Still Have Time Sometimes we panic because it feels like we’ve missed our shot. But hear this — as long as you’re breathing, you still have time. You can still start again. The clock isn’t your enemy — it’s your coach, reminding you that small steps add up. You’re not too late; you’re just getting seasoned. Every setback has been preparing you for the moment you stop doubting and start doing. So, take a breath, square your shoulders, and say, “My time isn’t over — it’s unfolding.” - Encouragement from Dr. Danny Morris 2025-10-17 01:35:09 | Comments | Printable version
