Green River Band kicks off Downtown Days

The Green River Band will kick off Columbia's 2025 Downtown Days at 6pmCT this Friday evening, October 10th on the Square. Join musicians Mark Harris, Jake Hill, Craig Dean, Jac Conover, and Adam Capps in their show.

Michael West, of MicDrop, gave a great review of the band after they headlined at this years Casey County Apple Festival. Craig shared his positive post which follows.

Robert Hadley opens new salon in Columbia

New business, "A World Class Salon," held a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening Saturday morning on the corner of Wall and Greensburg Streets in Columbia. Owner and Russell County native Robert Hadley brings his experience home to this area from Arizona and looks forward to seeing everyone soon. From left at the event were: Ellen Zornes, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce; Aaron LaBarge and his sons in back; Rodney Hadley, MaKayla Hadley, Madonna Hadley, Mayor Pam Hoots, Lisa Clark, Robert Hadley, Morgan Shackleford and Tiffany Foley.

Danny Irvin Wells, 70, Burkesville, KY

Danny Irvin Wells of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky having attained the age of 70 years, 1 months, and 16 days. He was born on Wednesday, August 17, 1955, in Albany, Kentucky, the son of Fred Earl & Dovie (Neal) Wells. He was of the Christian faith, and was a hardworking farmer for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John Wells, Marcus Wells and Earl Wells.

Kenny Pratt, age 79, Casey County, KY

Kenneth "Kenny" Pratt, age 79, of, Liberty, KY, passed away on Friday October 3rd, 2025. He was born December 9th, 1945, in Louisville, KY, a son of the late Lawrence "Larry" Pratt Jr. and Christine Marie Murphy Pratt.

Kenny was the owner and operator of Pratt Truck and Trailer Service.

Breeding Church Fall Festival is Nov 1

Breeding Church is having a Fall Festival from 2pmCT to 4pmCT on Saturday, November 1, 2025. The kids are sure to have a wonderful time, everything is completely free, we will have pizza, games (including a cake walk), crafts, coffee bar, movie & popcorn, and any event wouldn't be complete without awesome goody bags for the kids, filled with food, snacks, and lots more freebies. I'll say it again, everything is free.

Kentucky League of Cities advisor visits City Hall

City of Columbia | Assistant to the Mayor

On Monday, October 6, 2025, the City of Columbia was pleased to be joined by John Buchanan, Community & Economic Advisor for Kentucky League of Cities. Buchanan met with Mayor Pamela Hoots to discuss several issues facing our city, including economic development, housing, and ongoing infrastructure improvements.

While in Columbia, Buchanan presented City Clerk Woody Sharpe with a Level II Excellence in City Governance certificate from KLC's City Officials Training Center. In addition, the City was gifted with a new KLC Plaque, which will be displayed inside the lobby of City Hall.

The City of Columbia is a proud member of the Kentucky League of Cities, which represents over 370 of Kentucky's 412 incorporated cities, and we thank them for all that they do.

Downtown Days Pageant registration form

The 2025 Renaissance Columbia Downtown Days Pageants will begin at 10amCT on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Check in will begin at 9amCT.

The deadline to pre-register for Downtown Days Pageants is 4pmCT on Thursday, October 9, 2025. The entry fee is $25.00 for contestants. A late fee of $10.00 will be added day for day-of-pageant registration. The application can be downloaded at 2025-pageant-application (PDF). Categories include:

  • Mrs (22-35 & Married)
  • Miss (17-22)
  • Teen (14-16)
  • Pre-Teen (10-13)
  • Junior Miss (7-9)
  • Little Mr & Miss (4-6)
  • Toddler Miss (2-3)
  • Toddler Mister (2-3)
  • Tiny Miss (12-23 Months)

The winner in each age group will go on to represent Renaissance Columbia Downtown Days at the 2025 State Festivals Pageant on November 14-16, 2025, at the Embassy Suites in Lexington, KY.

Adair Co. Grand Jury Oct 2 indictments

On Thursday, Oct 2, 2025, the Adair County Circuit Court Grand Jury met and handed down indictments against 4 individuals from Columbia, Lexington, and Glasgow, KY. Charges included assault, possession, reckless driving, and promoting or procuring use of a minor by electronic means.

NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.

KY Deer & Elk app now available

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, in collaboration with the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation, has launched the "KY Deer & Elk" app, a new mobile tool designed for the state's deer and elk hunters. The app provides real-time hunting tools, planning support and essential field information to enhance hunting experiences both in the field and during preparation at home.

Key Features Include:
  • Offline maps with public land boundaries Interactive maps provide access to detailed public land property lines even when cell service is unavailable, allowing confident navigation in remote areas.

  • County-based hunt planning tools Users can build and save custom hunt plans tailored to specific counties, streamlining preparation and strategy.

  • Find what you need The app consolidates information on local, verified services - including Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing sites, processors, taxidermists and more - eliminating the need to consult multiple sources.

  • License and telecheck access Hunting licenses and telecheck information are easily accessible within the app, reducing administrative hassle while in the field.
Information about the free app is available on the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website (fw.ky.gov) on the KY Deer & Elk app webpage. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

City extends thanks for pumpkin donation

A big thank you goes out to Tina and Doug Page of Hidden Springs Farm for donating a large selection of pumpkins to the City of Columbia. The pumpkins range from relatively large pumpkins down to very small mini pumpkins. Some of these pumpkins will go towards the City's fall display while the remainder will be given away by the Mayor on the square at Downtown Days while supplies last.

Knifley Christian Church celebrates 150 years

Everyone is invited to the 150th Anniversary of Knifley Christian Church, October 10 thru 12, 2025. Speakers are: Friday night - Paul Patton; Saturday night - Larry Oetzel; and Sunday morning - Hugh Withers.

There will be a potluck meal and special music after the Sunday morning worship service. Nightly services start at 6pmCT and Sunday morning service is 10:30amCT. Come join us.

Giles's festival Saturday, October 4th, in Knifley

The 2025 Janice Holt and Henry Giles Festival, always the first Saturday in October, was enjoyed by both regulars and new visitors in Knifley. Good foods served up by Keysha Tucker, director of the property and Board, including pinto beans, greens, chili, and three kinds of cornbread - gluten-free, Mexican cornbread, and regular.

It was an absolutely beautiful fall morning. Driving through the countryside, there was only the occasional yellow or red leaf that had turned color, everything was still green in the surrounding hills.
