Kentucky Color: Nancy Hanks Lincoln By Billy Joe Fudge On October 5th, 1818, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, died of milk sickness. Abraham was just nine years old. Little was known about milk sickness to our early settler forefathers. In the Midwest and Upper South, some of their nursing lambs, calves and foals during late summer and early fall, along with many settlers, would get sick and often die. According to some reports, an unidentified Shawnee woman pointed out to Anna Pierce Hobbs Bixby that White snakeroot was poison. Ms Bixby, who was a midwife and a reported frontier doctor, researched and found that the milk and meat of animals that had consumed White snakeroot was apparently poison. As in this scene near Subtle in Metcalfe County, White snakeroot is most often found growing in forest openings, along forest edges and in forested areas with filtered sunlight. With summer food sources of grazers drying up and disappearing in late summer, the young tender growth of this plant was a tempting, fresh meal for our pioneer forefathers' animals. 2025-10-04 10:21:37 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge

Lindsey Wilson University nursing students receive white coats See also: Lindsey Wilson nursing Class of 2028 By Duane Bonifer Aubrey Smith '28 has wanted to be a nurse since her great-grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. On Friday evening, October 3, 2025, Smith took a major step toward realizing that goal when she and two dozen of her Lindsey Wilson University nursing classmates received their white coats at a ceremony in V.P. Henry Auditorium. The students entered a crowded V.P. Henry Auditorium wearing their blue scrubs, and they left wearing a white laboratory coat. The "Blessing and White Coat Ceremony" -- the 16th time Lindsey Wilson's nursing program has held the event -- signified the 25 students' formal transition from their preclinical courses into the clinical component of their coursework, according to Lindsey Wilson Director of Nursing Dr. Emiley Button. "This is an outstanding group of individuals," Button said during the ceremony. "We are extremely proud of each and every one of you. All of the students here have arrived at this point due to guidance, love and support of others, many of whom are in attendance tonight. These people believe in you, as do we. As nursing students, you'll continue to rely on that personal support in the years to come." Carol Perkins: Raindrops Keep Falling Previous Column: Relaxing at the beach By Carol Perkins Sunday morning began with a forecast of rain on Jacksonville Beach. We were there to visit my niece and her family and enjoy the beach. One particular morning, the four of us ate at the Broken Egg. The fun part of a vacation for Guy is the food. Freeda and I spotted a hair salon beside the restaurant so we had our hair "done" while Connie and Guy waited. Just as the hairdresser began to blow dry my hair, the rain fell in buckets. Oh, no, a rainy beach day is not what we ordered. I was not happy.
