Carol Perkins: Squirrel Soup

Previous column: Purple Chicks

By Carol Perkins

We are overrun with squirrels. Watching them scamper from tree to tree is enjoyable, but watching them dig in my flowerbed and look for bulbs brings out evil thoughts. They are getting too familiar. Every time I put out birdfeed, I find one sitting in the feeder tray, having lunch. They come one at a time, taking turns. How generous of them. They also nibble on the wires under the car. That is not so nice.

When our son purchased his dad's truck and drove it back to Texas, he bragged about how well it drove. The following week, he took it for an inspection (a law there), and the mechanic asked him about what varmints lived around him. Jon knew what he meant-Kentucky squirrels. The mechanic said the rascals had nibbled on every wire. It's lucky Jon made it home.

Squirrels once knew their place. They stayed in the woods, avoided shotguns or rifles (even BB guns), and didn't trespass. Today, they feel right at home in subdivisions with trees and backyards.

Researching Compton ancestors in Nell, Elroy, and Gradyville

Leslie Lindsay is a writer with ties to Adair Co (her great-grandmother was Cora Belle Compton b. 1894 to George H. Compton and Nancy Alice Gosser Compton). She writes, "I'm mostly interested in my great-grandmother, Cora Belle Compton, and her early years in Adair County. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records put her in Nell, Elroy, and Gradyville."

Leslie shared a couple of great old photos of Russell Compton, possibly taken in Edmonton, KY (click story title to view them both). If you happen to have more information about the photos or Leslie's research, you can use our Comment Form and we'll pass it on to her.

You can contact her directly and find out more about Leslie's writing at leslielindsay.com.

KSP arrests two from Russell Co. in Child Abuse investigation

By Trooper Jonathan Houk

Russell Springs, KY - On March 15, 2024, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 received a call of a possible criminal child abuse that had occurred earlier this week in Russell Springs. A KSP Trooper spoke with an individual in Green County in regards to the safety of his children.

The Trooper learned that on March 12, 2024, a 10-month-old child had been taken to the Russell County Hospital and transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital by helicopter for treatment of serious injuries. The child's injuries were reported to the hospital, and the Russell Springs Police Department, to have been sustained after being attacked by an unknown stray dog. Russell County first responders had responded to the area and attempted to locate the stray dog but their efforts were unsuccessful.

On March 15, 2024, Troopers responded to a residence on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs to speak with the child's mother and her boyfriend. As the investigation progressed, Troopers determined the dog that had attacked the child actually belonged to the couple, and was not a stray. The boyfriend had concealed the location of the couple's dog after the incident causing local first responders to use resources searching for a stray dog that did not exist.
