April Brings National Donate Life Month Celebrations

This year, National Donate Life Blue & Green Day is on April 12.

Each year, National Donate Life Month is celebrated in April, a special time to focus attention on organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks work with Donate Life America to share the importance of registering one's decision to be a donor, honor deceased and living donors, and celebrate the lifesaving and healing gift of transplantation.

"This April, we remind everyone that they can help save a life. Registering your decision to be an organ donor takes less than a minute and gives hope to more than 1,000 people in Kentucky waiting for a lifesaving transplant. The decision to register is the beginning of a story that may bring life and healing to more than 75 people, their families and their communities," said Dennis Loy, Adair Co. Circuit Court Clerk.

To illustrate the message of donation, Donate Life America creates unique artwork for each National Donate Life Month. The 2019 art was inspired by bicycles and the phrase, "Life is a beautiful ride." Bicycles serve as a symbol of progress, renewal and the moving circle of life. The bicycle theme and art will be incorporated into celebrations and events across the country during April.

"We each carry the potential to help make LIFE a beautiful ride for ourselves, and then for others by registering as a donor, considering living donation, being a caregiver and championing the Donate Life cause," says Loy.

Bowling Green couple welcomes one-in-10,000 triplets

By Caroline Eggers, Bowling Green Daily News

Triplets are rare. Identical triplets are rarer. Last week, Megan and Matthew Allred welcomed Greyson, Rowan and Sawyer into the world at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.

"It's like one in 10,000 births, especially if it occurs naturally," said Dr. Aspasia Fissikoudi, a neonatologist at The Medical Center, as opposed to the heightened risk associated with in vitro fertilization. The hospital delivers triplets every four or five years, and the last natural triplet pregnancy was in 2007.

When asked if they would consider more children, the parents simultaneously - and decisively - shook their heads no.

Beshear joins response to ACA appeal

By Crystal Staley

Beshear, AGs file opening brief in federal court to protect essential health care coverage

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Attorney General Andy Beshear and a coalition of 20 other attorneys general filed their response in Texas v. U.S. in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

In their brief, the attorneys general argue that the plaintiffs do not have standing, that the district court wrongly concluded that the minimum coverage provision was unconstitutional and that there was no legal basis for declaring the rest of the ACA invalid.

Beshear said there are at least 10 key ways Kentuckians would be harmed if the case is not overturned, including: expanded Medicaid would be eliminated; children under the age of 26 would not be able to remain on their parents' insurance; seniors would have to pay more for prescription drugs; and guaranteed pregnancy coverage would be eliminated.
