Meet new C-AC Chamber Board member Wendy Burt Chamber Board MemberWendy Burt and husband Bob Burt finds nature, and a long driveway, in Adair County Story from Chamber Insights, October 2010. Click to Complete October 2010 Chamber Insights By John Brown, LWC Bonner Scholar and Dan Koger, LWC Associate Professor of Communication When Wendy Burt and her husband, Bob, came to Adair County two years age, they knew they wanted to live "deep in nature". For Burt, newly appointed member of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, this meant, among other things having a really long driveway. "I was raised in rural Wisconsin", Burt said in discussing her views on being a board member. "After lots of years in the city, we knew we wanted to retire to a rural area. One way we defined 'deep into nature' was to live at the end of a long driveway". Burt and her husband have their wish. They just moved into a new house in the Melson Ridge area of Adair County, a home built to their energy-saving specifications, and located at the end of a half-mile-long driveway. Her mother, June Kemper, raised Morgan horses here For Burt, love of nature is a family thing. In deciding to relocate in this area, she drew on the experiences of her mother, June Kemper, who lived in Adair County for 20 years, from the mid 1970's to the mid 1990's raising Morgan horses on a farm in the county. Burt has had a life-long appreciation of nature and the environment. She takes pride in being one of the first graduates of the environmental studies program at the University of Wisconsin. She followed her interest in nature to a 35-year career in environmental affairs with the Federal Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. Now she welcomes her appointment to the Chamber Board as a window in the environmental and energy opportunities in Adair County and surrounding areas. Home and acreage will be energy, environment lab "We're trying to use our own home and acreage as an energy and environment laboratory", Burt said. "We'd be glad to share what we learn with others". Sue Stivers, Chamber Executive Director and long an advocate of energy and job-development in Adair County, sees Burt's arrival on the Board of Directors as a chance to partner with an energy and environment specialist with a background in the area and fresh views on a complex topic. "Wendy brings tremendous experience in the energy and environmental fields", Stivers said. "But she also brings great sensitivity to the unique culture of our area. She appreciates where the county has been and where it can go in the future". This story was posted on 2010-11-05 05:15:38
