Share the Road during National Pedestrian Safety Month

From Marla Marrs/Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and Team Kentucky is reminding all travelers to stay alert and practice safe habits as they share the road.

"Staying safe on the road is a shared responsibility," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Kentuckians can help save lives by looking out for one another. When traveling, please give yourself time, stay focused, and make safety the priority."

Safe walking and driving habits are especially important at night, which comes earlier through the fall and winter months. Last year in Kentucky, 76% of the 89 pedestrian deaths occurred after dark. So far this year, there have been 57 pedestrian deaths, 40 of which occurred after dark.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with NHTSA to promote safe driving and walking tips throughout October to improve safety for everyone on the road:

Kentucky Fall Colors

2026-10-11 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
Robert writes: "While it's still early for the best Fall colors, I did decide to take advantage of the wet, overcast conditions on Sunday and drove over into Russell County to look for some potential photography. However, I'm not sure if I was in Adair or Russell County when I took the photo above."

Silent City Tour is Monday, October 12

From Mike Watson

The Annual Silent City tour of the Columbia Cemetery--the 20th anniversary--is scheduled for 5pmCT on Monday, October 12, 2026. We have a great lineup for this Tour with the following individuals portraying interesting residents of the cemetery. The presenters at the six stops on this amazing tour will be:
  • Dave Thomas
  • LeeAnn Jessee
  • Annita Dial
  • Richard Phelps
  • Mike Watson
  • Introducing: Tabitha Morgan, Amy Thomas and Renea Watson
The Columbia Cemetery was established prior to the year 1812 and was outside the limits of town. Over the past two centuries land has been acquired and the cemetery expanded. Many individuals were interred here, all with interesting stories that could be told. We touch upon just a handful of these individuals each October.

The first Silent City Tour was organized by the Adair County Genealogical Society with assistance of the Adair County Public Library in 2007, and we have not missed a single year--including during the pandemic era. There is no charge for any of our tours--the public is always encouraged to attend.

We ask that guests park at the Adair County Public Library parking lot [307 Greensburg Street], or along the route to the cemetery. We traditionally meet, sign in, then stroll as a group to the beginning point of the Tour. For those with mobility issues, park at the Justice Center parking lot or the Farmer's Market lot and walk up to the Old Section of the cemetery with those who walk from the library.

The Tour usually lasts about an hour. We then invite everyone to return back to the Research Center from whence the procession began and enjoy refreshments and take an opportunity to converse with the presenters.

Saunders sets touchdown record against Georgetown

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University running back Davontaye Saunders made Blue Raider football history, but it was not enough for No. 11 Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders were upset 24-21 in overtime by No. 22 Georgetown (Kentucky) College on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Parnell Family Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson fell to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference. Georgetown improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the MSC.

Saunders, a senior from Eminence, Kentucky, crossed the goal line with 2:54 left in the third quarter to give the Blue Raiders a 20-13 lead over the visiting Tigers. It was Saunders' 49th career touchdown as a Blue Raider, the most in program history.
