Carol Perkins: The Homecoming Court

Previous Column: Guy the Gardener

By Carol Perkins

Six babies are under three years old, and none of them lives near me. That's just not fair! My California niece has two under two years old. My California nephew's daughter turned one in February, and they are expecting next January. My Florida niece has a three-years old and just gave birth in June to her second baby, a son. My Bowling Green nephew has a baby boy who is crawling.

Babies make me happy. I don't have to raise (rear) them. All I have to do is love them. They will know Aunt Carol and, hopefully, love me back.

Being an aunt is special. One of my aunts was an RN at TJ for years. Clarice Baker was a highly respected nurse and teacher. During her tenure, nurses wore white uniforms and hats. She was present when Carla was born, standing beside Dr. Starr. This new mother found comfort in knowing Aunt Clarice was there.

Although I never visited for a weekend (she had her own children) or did special things with her, as I have with my nieces and nephews, she was a solid presence in my life.

Brieschke and Coomer graduate Public Safety Dispatch Academy

By Michael Moore

Richmond, KY - On July 16, 2025, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that 19 dispatchers from across Kentucky graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice Training's Public Safety Dispatch Academy and are now ready to begin answering the call to aid both citizens and law enforcement officers of the commonwealth.

Local graduates include Shaina M. Brieschke, with Edmonton/Metcalfe 911 Dispatch, and Skylar M. Coomer, with Russell County 911 Dispatch.

"Dispatchers are the heroes who connect law enforcement with Kentuckians during some of the greatest moments of need, and their work is so important in a time of crisis," Gov. Beshear said. "I want to thank these graduates for taking on this important job and supporting Kentuckians across the commonwealth. Congratulations and good luck."

Dispatch basic training is mandatory for any sworn or civilian employee who will dispatch law enforcement officers by radio at a Criminal Justice Information Systems agency. Graduates of the academy have successfully completed a highly structured and comprehensive curriculum to satisfy mandated training requirements.

Doors: Mr. Ben White, and Roley-Casey Creek Program a success

By Mike Watson

The Adair County Genealogy & History Research Center and the Adair County Genealogical Society's July 12th "Saturday Session" was a tremendous program. A departure from the usual Saturday Sessions, which are teaching-learning classes on how to study our local history and family history, this presentation, "Doors", was a double-header, of sorts. It began with a "Tribute to Mr. Ben White of Knifley Grade School" and morphed into "Remembering the Roley/Casey Creek Community" of Adair County.

Mr. Steven Ray, who is a dynamic speaker and historian, entertained and informed his audience with his experiences of coming to the area as a youngster with his family--his father was the new minister. He was introduced to an educational path that has never ceased to expand.

He was a student at Knifley School and elaborated on interactions with Mr. Ben White, the real backbone of the school. Mr. White's nephew and other family members were present and participated in the program.
