KSP: 197 arrested in Operation Summer Heat 2.0

From Sherry Bray

Frankfort, KY - On July 11, 2025, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that a New Kentucky Home is being created with fewer illegal drugs on the streets harming our families. The Kentucky State Police completed a successful Operation Summer Heat 2.0, targeting suspected drug networks operating in the commonwealth and leading to 197 arrests.

"Every Kentuckian should be safe and feel safe, and no Kentucky family should feel the pain of losing a loved one to addiction," Gov. Beshear said. "Because of the Kentucky State Police, we are accomplishing both of these goals, and we are thankful for the agency's dedication to every single one of our commonwealth's communities."

All 16 posts participated in Operation Summer Heat 2.0, and preliminary results indicate 197 arrests and 490 charges issued, along with the combined seizure of 3,002 grams of fentanyl, 1,176 grams of cocaine, 6,046 grams of methamphetamine, 408 grams of heroin, 600 fentanyl pills, 97 hydrocodone doses, 127 oxycodone doses and 67 doses of hallucinogens. Additionally, troopers confiscated 82 firearms, $181,381 in cash, and $200,000 worth of stolen property and also recovered a stolen vehicle. The estimated street value of the drugs collected exceeds $640,000. The investigation remains active, and more arrests are expected in the coming weeks.

Carol Perkins: Guy the Gardener

Previous Column: The Fourth of July

By Carol Perkins

"I planted two packages of seeds and not one of them came up. You'd think that at least one would pop up, but no, not a one," Guy said as he lamented over his favorite vegetable, okra. "That's why I planted a garden to start with." He sulked.

Early in the spring, Guy decided to try his hand at gardening again. He'd attempted it when we built the house in 1980, tilling a small plot, but the lack of topsoil yielded nothing worth preserving. Now, some forty years later and recently retired, he was giving it another go, though this time he limited himself to okra, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. The peppers were for me, a fact he pointed out while reminding me--with a whine--that we could buy them more cheaply.

On a slanted hillside, he planted watermelon and cantaloupe seeds. He was so proud as the vines emerged, but one day he discovered they had washed away.

Nearly three dozen teenagers stepped out of their comfort zones when they stepped onto Lindsey Wilson University's campus this week.

The 31 young teenagers from Southcentral and Eastern Kentucky counties were part of the Rogers Explorers Program, which was held July 8-10 at Lindsey Wilson. The program is sponsored by the Center for Rural Development in Somerset and held in partnership with six Kentucky universities, including Lindsey Wilson.

The program, which is open to students who have completed their eighth grade, is an intensive three-day, two-night experience on a university campus with a focus on developing skills in leadership, team building, technology, entrepreneurship and community service.
