Columbia City Council regular July session From Trey Stephens The Columbia City Council met in regular session on Monday, July 7, 2025. Several items were on the agenda: First reading was given on the ordinance annexing the property southwest at the intersection of Highway 80 and Highway 61 in Adair County. This is the property located at the junction of Cumberland Parkway. First reading was given to the ordinance amending the ordinance for purchase procedures in the City of Columbia. Noel Godby, 80, Russell County, KY Noel B. Godby, of Russell Springs, passed from this life on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Russell County Hospital, with his loving family at his side. He was 80 years, 11 months, and 8 days of age. Noel B. was born on July 29, 1944, in Windsor, the youngest child of the late Rev. Rufus Adam and Emma Baker Godby. After graduating from high school, Noel B. married Barbara Ann Bernard, and they made their home in Louisville. While living there, Noel became a Licensed Barber, working his way through mortuary school, graduating from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science on August 6, 1976. Afterwards, Noel and his family moved back to Russell Springs, beginning his long-time career under the direction of his father-in-law, Kenneth Bernard, at Bernard Funeral Home. He received his Funeral Director and Embalmer Licenses from the Kentucky Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors on January 24, 1979. Justin Kesterson is newly minted Eagle Scout On Monday, July 7, 2025 Justin Kesterson was inducted into an elite group of scouts at Columbia United Methodist Church. He was presented with his Eagle Scout Award that he earned days before his 18th birthday. Justin started his scouting journey in Washington with the Chief Seattle Council, working his way quickly up through the ranks from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts. He moved to Kentucky and joined Boy Scout Troop 185, based in Columbia, in 2022, where he continued to earn awards with the goal of one day becoming an Eagle Scout. On Monday night, that dream became a reality. With only two final requirements for Scouting's highest rank left to achieve, Justin started on his Eagle Scout project--building benches to be placed at the Cumberland County High School bus stop. Pickett's Chapel VBS starts July 9 From Ann Smith Pickett's Chapel will be having "Waves of Wonder" Vacation Bible School from 6pmCT to 8pmCT nightly, July 9-11, 2025, as we "wander the wilderness with Moses and receive water from a rock, and as we take a boat ride on a wavy sea with Jesus". Lanterns & Tombstones coming Friday Lanterns & Tombstones, season 4, number 4 will take place at 7pmCT on Friday, July 11, 2025, in the Columbia City Cemetery. Mike & Dave have the Veterans Walk ready to go! Park in the Justice Center lot and walk up to the "Old Section" Please, no parking in the cemetery. This is a walking tour through the historic cemetery and participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your enthusiasm. The Tour takes place each month throughout the year--April through September, culminating with the annual Silent City Tour of 2025 in October. Each month the Tour and narration will be different from previous months. There will be some specific information repeated each month for emphasis and to inform those who have not previously attended. Tenley Lewis is Champion in Western Junior Showmanship From Tony Rose County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development Congratulations to Tenley Lewis, who participated in the State 4-H Horse Show on July 1 and 2, 2025, at the State Fairgrounds in Louisville. Tenley is the Champion in the Western Junior Showmanship out of the 28 youth who showed in the Western Jr. Showmanship class. Tenley also placed second in the Western Horsemanship walk-trot class. KSP: Post 15 warns public of ongoing phone scam From Trooper Jonathan Houk The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 is warning citizens about a phone scam affecting people in the Post 15 area. Individuals have reported receiving phone calls from someone falsely claiming to be Trooper Houk and other KSP Troopers. The caller threatens arrest unless money is sent to them immediately. Please know that this is a scam. We want the public to know that KSP will never contact anyone by phone to demand money by threatening legal action or arrest. These tactics are fraudulent and intended to intimidate people into sending money under false pretenses. If you receive a phone call like this, hang up immediately. Anyone receiving suspicious scam calls similar to this tactic is urged not to provide personal or financial information to the caller.
