Great Wooded South, Chapter I

By Billy Joe Fudge

The Nascence
As a Forest Ranger with primary duties of wildland fire prevention and fire suppression, I discovered and developed an affinity with that which I named the Great Wooded South.

The Great Wooded South is a place; a place of a people and a culture without borders. A place that wraps itself around each of its inhabitants as one's skin envelops sinew, bone and breath. At the same time, a place enveloping all its community of citizens in a life giving forest of hills; of hollows; of rivers, creeks, streams and springs; of bogs; of plateaus; of desert dry ridge tops; of rocky outcroppings, boulders and bluffs; of trees young and old; of clearings both large and small!

We all live in this forest and this forest lives in us. It is our home. Yes, your forest, our forest, my forest is the Great Wooded South. South Central Kentucky, South Eastern Kentucky and Northeastern Middle Tennessee are the center of the Eastern Appalachian Foothills and are the heart of the Great Wooded South.

I began my career with the Kentucky Division of Forestry on August 1, 1972. Little did I know that it would become much more than a career. It became an identity that would follow me way beyond the 30 years of my employment and indeed would do so for the rest of my life.

A good season for rabbits

2025-07-06 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
The rabbits seem to be having a good season, based on the numbers I've seen grazing any time I've been out hiking lately.

Letter: First Amendment rights

Marty Brown writes:
If anybody is wondering who that crazy old lady is on the corner of Campbellsville and Merchant Streets, holding anti-Trump signs on Saturday midday, it's me, Marty Brown. And I'm not crazy, I'm simply exercising my First Amendment rights of free speech and assembly.

If there are any like-minded people who would like to join me, you would be welcome, or people with a different viewpoint would be welcome to come by for a calm discussion. I'm there every Saturday from 11:30 or shortly thereafter until 1:00 pm.

Travel: Exploring Detroit, Michigan

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

My latest bit of travel took me to a city that has found its way into a place of notoriety for all the wrong reasons over the past couple of decades. Whether it be a financial crisis within local government, a population decrease, abysmal sports teams, or something else, Detroit has certainly been through their fair share of recent struggles. But, let me just say, a lot has changed in recent years.

Downtown Detroit has undergone a large revitalization, complete with an influx of new retail, housing, and entertainment as well as corporate offices. The majority of the changes have come in three distinct downtown areas: Greektown, Campus Martius, and Grand Circus.

The city also offers renewed areas expanding out from downtown in Troy, Mt Clemens, and the quickly growing neighborhood of Corktown. Corktown features one of Detroit's most notable attractions, the recently restored Michigan Central Station.
