Big Al heading for three-million miles of driving

2025-07-01 - Photo from personal collection.

Al Owens shared a very special anniversary, "21 years ago today I started a life changing career in the trucking industry. I was a middle aged man who had not been able to find steady work that fulfilled me. But here I was comfortable and happy.

I have had the opportunity to see the lower 48, every major city, and do things with my life that I never dreamed I could accomplish. I have been very fortunate in my life and my beautiful wife Denise Railley Owens has helped us achieve the American Dream. Later this year I will have driven 3 million miles helping to make this beautiful country keep striving to be a World leader."

Green River Animal Shelter needs donations

By Gale Burris Cowan

If you watched the last Adair County Fiscal court meeting, you heard Tammy Crew from Green River Animal Shelter say that she had bought most of her supplies and dog/cat food out of her own pocket this month because she had no money left in the budget.

I'm asking anyone who can to make a donation. No matter the amount, anything will be appreciated. Items needed: Bleach, fabulosa, dish liquid, paper towels, dog/cat food, puppy food (wet and dry), kitten food (wet and dry), cat litter. Basically anything you think they might use.

CU School of Nursing achieves 100 percent NCLEX pass rate

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University's School of Nursing has demonstrated its excellence by achieving another 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for all students graduating in 2024.

The examination measures the competency of nursing graduates for entry-level practice, and it's a critical step for becoming a licensed registered nurse.

"All of our students who took the exam, passed on the first attempt," Dr. Michele Dickens, dean of the School of Nursing, said, " this shows the rigor of our program and the commitment of our faculty to the students to prepare them to pass the exam and then become a practicing registered nurse."

In total, 39 students from CU's School of Nursing passed the NCLEX for 2024.

Animals, Thunderstorms, and Fireworks

By Miss Donna Rieder
Clifty Creek Farm

I have to admit, I'm not fond of fireworks. While the displays can be spectacular, it's the impact they have on animals that concerns me. While wild birds and mammals experience thunder and lightning in their lives on a regular basis, the light and super-intense noise produced by fireworks can have severe detrimental effects on birds, bats, and wildlife, including permanent loss of hearing of those living in close proximity to where the fireworks are discharged. That hearing loss results in their inability to communicate, find a mate, and hunt for food. The light and noise can oftentimes cause them to panic and flee, abandoning nests and young, sometimes never to return. That's why war zones are devoid of birds and wildlife.

Fireworks can affect our pets as well. A great majority of dogs are afraid of storms and start trembling at the first rumble of thunder. Every year after July 4th, I see on the media countless stories of pets gone missing, sometimes never to be found. It's heartbreaking, and in most cases, totally avoidable. But there are some things us humans can do to mitigate the damage.

Public asked to help with Kentucky summer turkey brood survey

Frankfort, KY -- Kentucky's native wild turkeys are spending their summer days eating, moving and raising their recently hatched poults. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources asks the public to be on the lookout for turkeys as they move around and share their observations to help biologists better understand and manage wild turkey populations in the state.

"Monitoring our turkey flock for its long-term conservation depends on teamwork," said Zak Danks, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Wild Turkey Program coordinator. "Fish and Wildlife staff can't be everywhere all at once. That's where hunters and wildlife enthusiasts across the state can really help, reporting turkey sightings to our survey."

To report sightings of wild turkeys during the survey window, July 1 to August 31, 2025, visit the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Summer Turkey Brood Survey webpage, or enter the key words "turkey survey" in the search bar on the agency's website (fw.ky.gov) to access the online survey portal, link to the mobile survey app or download a printable form that can be mailed or emailed to the department. Data collected through this survey help the department to better understand turkey population trends over time.

Introducing Lindsey Wilson University

From Duane Bonifer

Today, July 1, 2025, is the first day of Lindsey Wilson University.

After more than 120 years of service as a training school, junior college and liberal arts college, Lindsey Wilson University begins its first fiscal year today.

The decision to rename the 122-year-old school was made unanimously in April by the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees -- and supported overwhelmingly by the faculty assembly, alumni association and student government -- to more accurately reflect the school's status.

"This is a culmination of a tremendous amount of hard work by Lindsey Wilson faculty and staff over the years, and I want to thank you for joining me on this exciting adventure," Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. wrote in an announcement Tuesday morning to the campus community.
