4-H Youth celebrated at Annual Teen Conference By Katelynn M. Molesky Adair County 4-H Member/E1-E2 Representative, Kentucky 4-H State Teen Council Earlier this month, over 500 youth of high school age from all across the bluegrass state attended the 101st Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference at the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. Throughout the week, delegates had the chance to experience the life of a college student by signing up for classes and staying in the Pigman Hall dorms. Also during this time many 4-H spirit events took place - such as Cloverfest, Achievement Awards, Fashion Revue, Scholarship Recognition, numerous assemblies, the dance, and finally the installation of the 2025-26 officer team. Available majors ranged from agriculture to engineering to communication, giving delegates a variety of choices to better pursue their interests - as well as expand their horizons. Alongside their majors, youth also took part in a service minor to give back to the community within and surrounding the campus. Behind the scenes of this event lay hours of hard work, planning, and dedication from extension specialists, Kentucky 4-H Foundation board members, university staff, State Teen Council representatives, and others with interest in the future of the organization - as well as that of the youth involved. Throughout the duration of Teen Conference, many teens were able to step out of their comfort zones and make friends from other counties, as well as take part in decisions that would affect the direction taken by the 4-H program in the coming months - such as the year's platform and tagline. By the end of the week, most delegates had smiles on their faces and new friends by their sides, marking this year's Teen Conference a success. Katelynn Molesky from Adair County is a member of the State 4-H Teen Council and helped with the Annual Teen Conference. Katelynn also received her Silver Honors at the Conference. 2025-06-23 11:04:38 | Comments | Printable version

Karnes 1st recipient of Joshua C. Phipps Memorial Scholarship From Duane Bonifer Former Lindsey Wilson College student Joshua Phipps was a model of public service, and the inaugural recipient of a scholarship named in his memory aims to live up to the high standards set by the late Russell County sheriff's deputy. Kaydence Karnes of Columbia has been named the first recipient of the Joshua C. Phipps Memorial Scholarship. The four-year, full-tuition scholarship is awarded annually by Lindsey Wilson to a graduating senior from Adair County High School or Russell County High School. Phipps, 38, died in September while helping Kentucky State Police and other agencies search on foot for a suspect. A 2005 Adair County High School graduate, Phipps served with the Russell County Sheriff's Office for three years and previously served with the Louisville Metro Police Department. "I'm very honored to be the first recipient of this scholarship," said Karnes, a 2025 Adair County High School graduate and the daughter of Anthony and Aleisha Karnes. "The way he dedicated his life to serving others inspires me as well." Karnes plans to major in education at Lindsey Wilson, which will become Lindsey Wilson University on July 1. She plans to have a career as a high school English teacher. This climax bout to kill me NOAA Weather shows we will be getting a full week of sun with high humidity and temperatures over 90 degrees. I'm not complaining... much... just thinking about my first husband who started the countdown to September around this time each year. He hated extreme heat and humidity and wanted no part of vacations to the ocean. He wanted Alaska. Our happiest summer trip was to Michigan. I'm reminded of an old friend who once remarked in weather like this, in the month of August, "Oh, the humility!! This climax bout to kill me!" - LW 2025-06-23 10:11:07 | Comments | Printable version
Tourism and varmint tracking in Red River Gorge By Paige Nickel I traveled to Powell County Tourism - Red River Gorge for our Kentucky Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus second quarter meeting this week. Between our amazing, glowing boat cave tours and hearing Big Foot stories from a proffessional Big Foot researcher and tour guide, we had a great series of classes! Happy to bring home new knowledge to my board, and big foot stories to my kids. There have been 17 sightings of a Big Foot named varmint in the Green River Lake area of Adair County!
