Tornado history for this region 1974-2024 In light of the heavy rains and the long stormy spring of 2025, the weather remains at the top of our thoughts. This article collects and categorizes tornado activity over the past 50 years. By Daniel Wilson, Storm Alert Center There has been a LOT of discussion concerning the shifting of "tornado alley" to include a large part of Kentucky, mainly along and west of Interstate 75. I have taken data from 1974 and ran it until 2024. In 1974, the year of the Super Outbreak Tornado of April 3rd, we experienced 59 tornadoes! Three of those tornadoes were F-5 (261-318 MPH), 20 were F-4 (207-260 MPH), 15 were F-3 (158-206 MPH) and only three were EF-1 (73-112 MPH). This was a rare weather event and it is likely there were more F-0 to F-1 tornadoes that night that were never reported so, that total could be well above 59. Dr. John Langefeld to lead KY Department for Public Health From Kendra Steele/Beth Fisher Frankfort, KY - On June 17, 2025, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Dr. John Langefeld will become the new Commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH). Dr. Langefeld, a seasoned leader within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), succeeds Dr. Steven Stack, who will transition to his new role of CHFS Secretary on July 1, 2025. Gov. Beshear praised Dr. Langefeld's experience across clinical care, health care policy and Medicaid services. "Team Kentucky believes that health care is a basic human right - one which Dr. Langefeld has dedicated his life to," said Gov. Beshear. "With his wealth of experience and proven commitment to the health and well-being of Kentuckians, I am confident that Dr. Langefeld will help us build on our efforts to keep Kentuckians informed, healthy and safe."
