Basketball: ACHS Indians games at RCHS on Monday

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team is back on the hardwood for 2025 summer ball today, Monday, June 16, 2025. The Tribe will travel to Russell County High School to take on the Warriors of Southwestern High School at 2:30pmCT, and then Lakers of Russell County at 4:30pmCT in two varsity showdowns.

The Indians JV will also face off against the Lakers JV at 3:30pmCT. Russell County High School is located at 2166 US-127, Russell Springs, KY.

Some at the Arts Council's Writers Day Saturday shared other talents as well as writing. Mike Carta paints, and he photographs sunsets like this one from his Bronson, KY deck overlooking Lake Cumberland. He is a voice-over actor and storyteller who grew up in the southwestern tip of the Appalachian Region of Kentucky in Russell County. He narrates audiobooks. He has voiced promos for HGTV, A&E, The History Channel, and several other popular cable channels, as well as over 150 radio stations regularly during his 30-year voice-over career.

New members welcomed into Jane Lampton Chapter, NSDAR

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the ladies of the Jane Lampton Chapter, NSDAR held a new member Ceremony at the Adair County Genealogy and History Research Center. New members were welcomed into the Chapter by Regent Ernestine Bennett, they were given the oath by Chapter Secretary Jane Grant and a prayer was given by Chapter Treasurer Lila Ford. New members each received a white carnation from the Chapter Regent.

New members who were given the oath were Kathy Keltner Cox, Cathy Baker Moss, Melanie Long Wrensch, and Shirley Nash York. New members unable to attend this ceremony were Ginger Brock Willis, Georgina Neal Roy, Marilyn Turner Brock, Nicole Alexandria Morrison, Shirley Montgomery Morrison, Karen Fagala Gibson, and Keitha Lee Gray. At the conclusion of the ceremony cake and punch were served. Cake was made by Sweet B's Bakery.

A new member ceremony is given to new members entering a chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. These ladies have had an ancestor who either fought or gave aid in the American Revolutionary War.

2025 Kentucky State FFA Convention Recap

Adair County FFA

The Adair County FFA traveled to Lexington on June 9-12, 2025, to compete in various competitions. On Monday, Adair County Middle School students Mason Curry, Logan Faulkner, Madison Foster, Kayden Pegg, Colton Grant, Andrew Miller, Mason Taylor, Will Reynolds, and Kylie Thorpe competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Prepared Public Speaking, Opening/Closing Ceremonies, and FFA Quiz Bowl Contests. Mason Taylor, Andrew Miller, Madison Foster, and Kylie Thorpe won 2nd Place in the state quiz bowl competition, and Mason Taylor was named high individual in the quiz bowl written exam.

On Tuesday, Jack Fishback gave a stellar performance and won 1st Place in the Talent Contest. He will be competing at the Kentucky State Fair. As well, Hudson Hancock presented his business proposal and was a recipient of a $5,000 FFA Shark Tank Grant for his SAE. Additionally, Abby Maulden competed in the Small Animal Public Speaking Contest and Amelia Martin competed in the Goat and Sheep Public Speaking Contest.

Fourth of July Fireworks Show

Adair County Deputy Judge Executive, Road Administrative Assistant & Solid Waste Coordinator

Adair County Judge/Executive Larry Russell Bryant is pleased to announce the upcoming Fourth of July firework show that will be held at the Lindsey Wilson College/Fairgrounds starting just after dark on Friday, July 4, 2025!

Casey Creek Pyrotechnics will be here again this year to put on the show for Adair County. Per their contract, no one will be allowed in the fairgrounds for parking or viewing. There will be free parking on a first-come, first served basis at Lindsey Wilson College, Green River Window and Door, and at the Adair County Extension office. Please be thoughtful of those who allow us to use their facilities and remember to remove any trash from the parking areas after the fireworks display.

Public safety arrangements will be provided by the Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department and the Adair County Sheriff's Department.

Judge Executive Bryant would like to thank the following sponsors for their donations which help make this event happen for our community: the Adair County Fiscal Court, the City of Columbia, Lindsey Wilson College, the Bank of Columbia, Community Trust Bank, United Citizens Bank, Kimbler's Plumbing, The Adair County Fire Department, The Adair County Sheriff's office, and First and Farmers National Bank.

Betty Catherine Beams, Taylor County, KY

Betty Catherine Pepper Beams of Greensburg, Kentucky, daughter of the late Shreve Pepper and Sybil Jeffries Pepper, was born on Monday, October 6, 1941 in Greensburg and departed this life on Saturday, June 14, 2025. She was 83 years, 8 months, and 8 days of age.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Sandlick Separate Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, loved her flowers, working in her garden, and spending time with her family.

KSP: Somerset man arrested after lengthy barricade

Somerset, KY - The Kentucky State Police Post 11 London was notified by Pulaski County 911 at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2025, regarding a barricaded subject near the intersection of East Mount Vernon St. and Crawford Ave. in Somerset.

The initial investigation indicates that John Woody of Somerset shot from his home into neighboring residences. The Somerset Police Department responded, and after unsuccessfully attempting to negotiate with Mr. Woody requested the response of the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team to assist.

After a brief standoff, Mr. Woody began firing shots towards troopers. Less-lethal force was utilized to remove Mr. Woody from the residence and place him under arrest.

Michael Lee Morris, 84, Adair Co., KY native (1940-2025)

Michael Lee Morris of Louisville passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family and the sounds of his favorite bluegrass music.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with cremation to follow the service.

Visitation will be from 4pmET to 8pmET on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home at 4895 N. Preston Hwy Sheperdsville, KY.

Visitation will continue Wednesday from 10amCT until 1pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY.

Frances Lee Murrah, 96, Taylor County, KY

Frances Lee Murrah of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ray Caldwell and Evelyn Keltner Caldwell, was born March 23, 1929 in Adair County, Kentucky. She died Thursday, June 12, 2025 in Campbellsville at age 96.

She professed faith in Christ and was a long time member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville.
