Please help prevent child abuse in Kentucky

From Tim Lawson

Child abuse will occur this month and, sadly, in every month to come. Out of every thousand children, seven experience abuse or neglect.

There are many amazing organizations fighting on the front lines to put preventative measures and education in place. However, where does a child who has experienced abuse and needs assistance with medical and emotional care turn? Where do parents go to navigate the confusing and oftentimes exhausting legal process? In the past, these needs were often and unfortunately lost, and children were left with lifelong wounds with offenders free to live in society and oftentimes offend again.

The Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky has been bridging the gap from hope to healing for children who are abuse victims for 25 years.

LWC Business Class Prepares Next Generation of Entrepreneurs

Students Isaac Duop '25 of Louisville, Kentucky, and Cash Stephens '26 of Russell Springs, Kentucky, earn statewide award for their business plans.

From Duane Bonifer

The next generation of Fortune 500 leaders might have emerged from a classroom this spring in Lindsey Wilson College's Goodhue Classroom Building. Students in the "Entrepreneurship Project" class, taught by business faculty member Linda Grider, spent the semester creating and implementing plans to start their own business. And two of them were recognized on the state level for their work.

Students Isaac Duop '25 of Louisville, Kentucky, and Cash Stephens '26 of Russell Springs, Kentucky, were two of five winners in the highly competitive University of Kentucky Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship Bootcamp 1.0. The semester-long program that assesses business concepts includes plans submitted by undergraduate and graduate students from throughout the United States.

"The fact that they were able to go up against not only students from all over the country but against some students who are also in graduate school speaks volumes of the quality of the thought, work and effort put into their plans," said Grider.

Hopkins One Room School - a look back in time

Just north of Albany on US-127 in Clinton County, KY, you'll find the historic Hopkins School, established 1858 and used through 1962.

Its doors were closed as a school when students began attending Albany Elementary. After that, many will remember, it was painted red and used as a church, and later until the restoration effort it was used for storage.

It was restored in 1997 and has been furnished in the original condition - a sweet, rural, one room school house.

Why you get brain freeze - and what to do

Brain freeze, technically known as sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia, happens when something cold hits the roof of your mouth fast - like chugging an icy drink or scarfing down ice cream.

The chill shocks the blood vessels in your palate, making them constrict quick, then dilate just as fast as your body tries to warm things back up. This rapid shift messes with nearby nerves, especially the trigeminal nerve, which handles face sensations.

Phillip Coffey - Jaws of Death

Out of the jaws of death I did
remove a trophy from Doofus' mouth
He had in full display for Billie A. near the
back door of the kitchen in the screen porch.

Round and round I gathered my strength
To open doors for the fledgling bird’s escape.
Neighbor joined in the sherade in much delight

As bird lifted in from the display of sure death
On freedom’s wings among the canopy of
Green leaves hidden above the forest floor
To cat’s chagrin - once more. -Phillip Coffey
