Jade is the epitome of who you want your children to look up to, on and off the field! She hustles every play, is determined to make every out, is passionate to pursue excellence within her craft, cares about every one she interacts with, and is a leader for our entire school system.

Butch Hanson, 73, Green County, KY

William Harvey "Butch" Hanson, of Greensburg, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2025. He was 73.

He was born on December 25, 1951 to the late William Mark Hanson, Sr. and Milba Marie Starcher Hanson. Bill was a former maintenance worker at a condominium located in Alexandria, VA, for several years. When he was younger, he enjoyed carpentry, working as an electrician and plumber. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed fishing.

Bank of Columbia makes $20,000 gift to Lindsey Wilson College

The Bank of Columbia has given $20,000 to Lindsey Wilson College, which will be used to support a scholarship and the college's operating expenses.

"The Bank of Columbia is proud to support Lindsey Wilson College and honored to partner with the college to provide the opportunity for our local students to further their education after high school in obtaining a college degree right here in their hometown," said Bank of Columbia President and CEO Mark Dykes.

The Tommy D. Grider Endowed Scholarship, named in honor of the longtime Bank of Columbia board member, will receive $15,000 of the Bank of Columbia gift. The Grider Scholarship is given annually to an Adair County High School graduate pursuing a degree in business or finance.

The remaining $5,000 is an unrestricted gift to Lindsey Wilson.

"The economic impact Lindsey Wilson College has on Columbia and Adair County is, to say the least, more than significant," said Dykes. "The Bank of Columbia owners, its board members and employees pledge continued support of Lindsey Wilson College in our community."

Adair Schools will be closed on Friday, May 9

In a gesture of love and respect for the family of David King, an 8th grade student at Adair County Middle School, all Adair County Schools will be closed on Friday, May 7. This closure allows students, staff, and the community to attend his funeral.

We continue to keep David's family, friends, and our entire school community in our thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

Tammy Loraine Underwood, 53, Metcalfe County, KY

Tammy Loraine Sallee Underwood, of Metcalfe County, Kentucky, formerly of Greensburg, daughter of the late Roy Williams Sallee, Jr. and Katherine "Kathy" Beck Sallee, was born on January 19, 1972 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. She departed this life on Monday, May 5, 2025 at her residence having attained the age of 53 years, three months and 17 days.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Baptist faith. Tammy was a former teacher's assistant for Green County Head Start.

Walmart holds Grand Reopening event

Walmart Manager Shaunda Soverly welcomed everyone to the grand reopening celebration of the Columbia Walmart store Friday. She said she couldn't be more proud of the transformation of the store and everyone who makes it work.

Walmart first came to Columbia in 1984, first to the location on Jamestown Street, and then to the present location at the intersection of Burkesville Road and the Cumberland Parkway. After introductions and grant presentations Shaunda said, "I can't wait to see what lies ahead."

Chamber of Commerce to meet May 13

The May monthly meeting of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce will be held at NoonCT on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Trabue-Russell House, 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY.

Mary Anne and her crew will be serving us a delicious, homemade meal. Paige Nickel and Breann Franklin, Tourism Director and Assistant Director, will be our speakers as well as a few LWC students who have been in a mentorship with Paige. We hope to see you there!

LWC Aquatics Program has something for everyone

The Holloway Wellness Center at Lindsey Wilson College is getting ready for a summer full of action and a lot exciting opportunities for the community. Whether you're looking to learn to swim, become a certified lifeguard, or join a recreational swim team, the Aquatics Program has something for everyone.
  • Group Swim Lessons - Two Weeks of Fun and Learning
    Starting soon, the Aquatics Program will offer two weeks of group swim lessons for individuals of all ages and experience levels. Lessons are $50 per week, and participants are welcome to sign up for one or both weeks. Registration and payment will take place in person at the Holloway Wellness Center, including the same day of the lesson if needed. For more information, contact Alejandra Martinez, Aquatics Program Intern, at alejandra.martinez@lindsey.edu .

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course
    Lindsey Wilson College will also be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course, perfect for individuals looking to become certified for summer job opportunities or improve their safety skills. Registration is open until this Saturday, May 10, 2025, and those interested must contact Alicia Kemnitz at kemnitza@lindsey.edu to register and receive more information.

  • Blue Raider Aquatics Club (BRAC) Summer League Registration
    The Blue Raider Aquatics Club (BRAC) is returning with its Summer League Recreation Program, inviting young swimmers to compete, train, and, most importantly, have fun this summer. Registration for the BRAC summer league will be held on May 19, May 20, and May 27, 2025, from 5pmCT to 7pmCT, in the lobby of the Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 399 Williams St., Columbia, KY. This is a fantastic opportunity for families to get involved in a supportive, team-based swim program. Questions about BRAC registration should be directed to Tyler King at kingt@lindsey.edu.
With swim lessons, certification opportunities, and a thriving youth swim league, the Aquatics Program at Lindsey Wilson College is ready to make a big splash this summer. Come be part of the action!
