Lanterns & Tombstones Tour at Bearwallow was a success

Click headline for photos from the Bearwallow tour.

Much of Friday, May 2, 2025, was a rainy, dreary, cool day. The Lanterns & Tombstones Tour with Dave Thomas and Mike Watson was scheduled to take place at Bearwallow Cemetery starting at 7pm. We were all doubtful, but hopeful, that the weather would break and the tour could go on. It was long awaited by many. We do not like to cancel our tours until the last minute, on the spot, and only if it is raining or storming. Friday was a typical wait-and-see evening.

Folks started coming into the parking lot. The sky still shed drops of cold rain. We waited and by 6:50--normally when we would make the announcement--the drops ceased, or nearly, and the tour went on as planned. Here are a few photos of the event...

Cattle producers celebrated during Beef Month in Kentucky

From Madison Pergrem

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky cattle producers and industry representatives joined Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell on Monday, May 5, 2025, as he signed a proclamation commemorating the month of May as Kentucky Beef Month.

"With 869,000 head of beef cattle in the Commonwealth, Kentucky remains the state with the largest beef inventory east of the Mississippi River," Commissioner Shell said. "We retain that title with the hard work of our cattle farmers. I ask that Kentuckians join me in recognizing their effort, diligence, and perseverance as we celebrate May as Kentucky Beef Month."

The United States is the world's largest producer of beef, primarily high-quality, grain-fed beef. Kentucky ranks 14th nationally for total cattle inventory and eighth in the nation for beef cattle. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kentucky is home to 31,060 beef cattle producers of the 69,400 total farms in the state.
