Basketball: Indians advance to 5th Region Championship game

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians defeated the Caverna Colonels 56-49 in the semifinal of the 5th Region tournament on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Marion County High School.

The Indians struggled early, falling behind by 5 at the end of the first quarter, but battling back to take their first lead of the game halfway through the second quarter and then onto lead by 11 at the half.

Caverna refused to go away though, battling back to within 5 points at the end of the third quarter. Thankfully, the Indians were able to outlast the Colonels in the end to grab a 7 point victory and notch a second straight trip to the 5th Region Championship game.

Connor Loy led the scoring for Adair County with 23 points, followed by Brayton Coomer with 12 and Dawson Gilbert with nine. Loy posted a double-double adding 10 rebounds to lead the team, followed by Isaiah Cochran with eight and Coomer with seven. The team shot just 38% from the floor and 33% from three point range, and also struggled mightily shooting free throws, going just 13 for 21 for 62% from the charity stripe.

The team will face the winner of Green County and North Hardin in the 5th Region Championship on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, back at Marion County High School.

Kentucky Color: Smokey, how the legend began

By Billy Joe Fudge

Dad was born in 1925 and as a young man growing up in Tory, he was a trapper and hunter in the 1930s and 1940s. Most hunting and trapping back in his growing-up days was to provide much needed meat for the table and to put some money in the family's survival fund. However, by the time I came along, Dad was fox hunting at night for pleasure.

I remember before the age of 5, Dad had two fox hounds, Rainbow and Alec. Rainbow was a sorta Black and Tan with nuances of those colors. He was heavily built, and I remember riding on his back. Alec was, according to my memory banks, a more slender, streamlined dog and grayish in color. I remember playing with them in the yard. The green hickory nuts on the ground would hurt my feet.

We lived at the end of a dirt road. I was starting school at 6 years old and the school bus could not negotiate our road.

Basketball: Indians face Colonels in tournament play

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Monday, March 17, 2025, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team returns to the court to face the Caverna Colonels (17-12) in the semifinals of the 5th Region Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30pmCT/5:30pmCT at Marion Co. High School, 735 East Main Street Lebanon, KY. Tickets are $10.85, and can be purchased online at eventlink.com.

The Indians and the Colonels have faced once before this season with Adair County coming out victorious, 63-48, at Caverna. While the Colonels may not be a very deep team, they have high quality athletes in their starting 5, which is just about all of the team we should expect to see, as Caverna typically only plays 6 or 7 players in an entire game.

Junior Jaylin Craine is at the top of the list for players that may give the Indians problems tonight, as he already has two Division 1 offers, including one from EKU. Craine has been an indicator of success for the Colonels as over their last five games, averaging 10 points in Caverna's loses and 19 points in their victories. Attempting to slow him down will be important for the Tribe tonight if they want to win and advance to a second straight 5th Region title game. Caverna will likely come out hungry tonight, as it has been 20 years since the Colonels have played in the 5th Region semifinals ,and a year longer since they have played in the 5th Region finals.

The winner of tonight's matchup will go on to face the winner of Green County and North Hardin in the championship game on Tuesday. A lot of talk and hype has been going around about a possible championship matchup between Green County and Adair County, but if that has been weighing on your mind let me remind you that the Indians still have to get through a tough, talented, and thirsty-for-victory Caverna team, which will be no easy feat. They could use your clapping, cheering, and support at Marion County High School tonight.

Lindsey Wilson College Theatre presents The Weir in April

Update: LWC: Thursday performance of The Weir moved to April 7

From Duane Bonifer

Life in rural Ireland as depicted by one of the greatest living playwrights will be on the stage in Lindsey Wilson College's first play of the spring.

The Lindsey Wilson College Theatre Department will present Conor McPherson's The Weir at 7pmCT on April 2-4, 2025, and at 2pmCT on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in the college's V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St., Columbia, KY. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to lindsey.edu/theatre or contact theatre professor Robert Brock at brockr@lindsey.edu.

The Weir involves five characters having a conversation in a pub in rural western Ireland. The weir refers to a hydroelectric dam that was built on a local waterway set near where the play takes place.

"The play features four male and a female character who come into the local pub," said Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, who is directing the play. "They sit around and talk about everyday life, and they tell ghost stories. Of course, there's a lot more to the plot than that, but I think audiences will find the play very engaging and interesting because the stories told by the characters are pretty cool. And the audience is also drawn into the characters' lives as they talk and tell their stories."
