Raccoon rescue in Daniel Boone Forest dumpster By Steve Kickert 1 would like to preface this piece with a word of advice. If someone ever says to you "Hey Ranger there's a raccoon with a broken leg in the dumpster", keep walking. Better yet, run. Ignore any altruistic urges that might argue for attempting a rescue. Trust me, no good will come of it. I speak from experience. It was a hot, muggy day in July. I was walking through Laurel Lake Campground where I was working as a Forest Service naturalist on the Daniel Boone National Forest. As was my custom, I was inviting campers to a program I would be presenting later that evening. I was dressed in my clean Forest Service uniform. 1 believe in looking my professional best when interacting with the public. A camper with a concerned look on his face approached me and said, "HEY RANGER, THERE'S A RACCOON WITH A BROKEN LEG IN THE DUMPSTER." Early dismissal for Regional Football Game at Union Co. HS From Superintendent Jason Faulkner The Adair County School District will have an early dismissal at 12:30pmCT on Friday, November 15, 2024. This schedule adjustment is necessary to support transportation needs for the regional football game, which will require buses for the team, cheerleaders, pep bus, and essential equipment. The district values student and staff safety and is committed to ensuring the football team, supporting squads, and other event attendees have safe and timely transportation to the event. Basketball: Guess scores career-high in LWC win The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated Cincinnati-Clermont (OH) 84-54 on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Biggers Sports Center. The Blue Raiders (4-0) were led by Taylor Guess who scored a career-high 31 points on 12-of-21 shooting while connecting of 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Jarie Thomas was the other Blue Raider in double figures with 14 while tying a game-high in rebounds with seven. Beulah Jones, 86, Russell County, KY (1938-2024) Beulah Jones, of Russell Springs, passed from this life on Monday, November 11, 2024, at her home. She was 86 years of age. Born in Columbia, on February 19, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Nola Wolford Goodin. She retired after 34 years as a bookkeeper for Russell County Stockyards and was of the Baptist faith. Beulah loved her family, especially her grandbabies, which she helped raise. Over 200 attend 22nd-annual LWC Luncheon to Honor Veterans By Venus Popplewell, LWC Director of PR Lindsey Wilson College honored area veterans on Monday, November 11, 2024, when it hosted its 22nd Annual Veterans Day Appreciation Luncheon. The heartfelt event was held at the Adair County VFW Post 6097, with 203 veterans and their families in attendance. The veterans enjoyed food provided by the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining and Conference Center and LWC students and staff assisted veterans during the event. The Joyful Hearts Quilt Guild gave away handmade, patriotic quilts to 17 lucky veterans chosen by random drawing. The members of the local quilt guild worked together over the past year to provide custom quilts for the veterans. The Veterans Appreciation Luncheon concluded with a piano solo from LWC art freshman Lucy LU from Tokyo, Japan, as well a performance by Lindsey Wilson's choral ensembles under the direction of LWC Associate Professor of Music & Director of Choral Programs Gerald Chafin. ACHS Football dominant in win over McLean Co. By Trey Stephens Columbia Magazine Sports Writer On Friday night, November 8, 2024, the Adair County High School Indians defeated McLean County 41-0 in the first round of the 2024 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals, held at Adair County. The game was a complete win for the Indians on both sides of the ball. This was a stellar performance for the Indians and marks the first time the team has made it to the second round of the playoffs since 2016. The second round game will be held at 7pmCT on Friday, November 15, 2024, where Adair County (10-1) will face Union County (9-2) on the road in Union County.
