Operation Crash Reduction runs Oct. 11-14

From Marla Marrs

Frankfort, KY - As part of a regional initiative aimed at encouraging seat belt use to save lives and preventing serious injuries due to traffic crashes, law enforcement throughout Kentucky will conduct a high-visibility enforcement campaign, called Operation Crash Reduction, October 11 through October 14, 2024.

"Sharing the road with other drivers means a lot is beyond our control, but one thing we can each decide is to make the safe choice to buckle up every time," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Seat belt use and responsible driving practices for both drivers and passengers can be the difference between life and death."

Since 2011, October has been the highest month for fatal crashes in the United States. In Region 3 states, approximately half of vehicle occupants killed in these crashes were unrestrained. Additionally, since 2011, more roadway deaths have occurred on Columbus Day weekend than during the holiday periods of Thanksgiving or Memorial Day.

Ode to youth

By Phillip Coffey

Ode to youth when fun and games led not to much, much more.
No noise about, with creaks and soon the roaring of sleeping snores.
No distant memories of so long ago with fancy dreams to challenge all to be explored.
No dampened spirits to wit, nothing to implore.

No mountains too high or valleys so very deep to the core.
In younger days, inquiring minds met with little resistance of fabled lore.
Fancy free, no treasured chest of goods or 'out the door.’
Lift the banner, ”salt and peppered,” nevermore.

Carol Perkins: The Bake Sale

Previous Column: Growing Old

By Carol Perkins

The Metcalfe Shoebox Mission for the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child holds a bake sale the Friday before the Pumpkin Festival each year to raise money for shipping and supplies. The community pours out its support, both buying and selling. We had so many buyers that we sold already-purchased items twice. Here is the story.

My friend Dora Rowe chose her items and placed them on a side table early in the day because she knew she would get busy with customers (she volunteered) and miss out. However, she must not have placed them far enough away because when she was ready to pay, they were nowhere in sight! We looked everywhere, thinking she might have misplaced a cake or two, but they were G O N E. What did she do? She laughed and bought replacements.

Housing crisis explained at Chamber meeting

Land development was the topic for Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce members at the October lunch meeting Tuesday at the Welcome and Development Center.

There is a housing crisis in the state, including in our own rural area. Recommendations were made to talk with legislators and get involved in the new committee charged with creating a solution. The state is rapidly growing in jobs and affordable housing needs to quickly expand to serve workers. An example was given of Glendale where the huge new Ford plant, Blue Oval, is being developed - new job recruits are sleeping in their cars in some cases because they can't find a place to live.

Jean Gosser, 79, Russell County, KY (1945-2024)

Nelda Jean (Cravens) Gosser, age 79, of Russell Springs Kentucky left this earthly life on October 8, 2024 at home surrounded by her family. She was a Russell County Kentucky native with deep ancestral roots to Russell and Adair County. She was born at home January 20, 1945. She was the surprise "change of life baby" born to the late Beatrice Vivian (Grider) Cravens and Warren Cravens.

Jean was raised on a small family farm without indoor plumbing and electricity. When electricity came to Russell County, the barn received it first. She was well acquainted of the hardships of being self-sufficient if you wanted to eat. Raising gardens that were plowed by the mules, butchering hogs and rendering the lard, this was just life and you didn't waste anything. It was Biblical; you earn your bread by the sweat of your brow.
