Marilyn Derringer, 68, Liberty, KY (1956-2024) Marilyn Derringer, 68, of Liberty, KY, passed away and was taken up by her Lord and Savior. She was born on January 15, 1956, in Taylor County, KY, to the late William E. and Myrtle Wethington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Wethington. Marilyn was a kind and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend who always placed others before herself. She loved deeply and unconditionally, leaving behind countless memories of laughter and warmth. She cherished life’s simple pleasures, from quilting to enjoying spooky movies, ‘frogging’ her son-in-laws, mastering Tetris, and winning at Spade Rummy. Though her passing leaves a void, her love and joy will live on in her family forever. Box truck needed to transport water for relief efforts From Venus Popplewell LWC Director of Public Relations In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raider Band is collecting water donations through Saturday to help the community of Newport, Tennessee. Water donations can be dropped off at the LWC Blue Raider Band building, 391 Williams Street, Columbia, KY. Bottled water, gallon jugs and potable water donations will be received from 8amCT until 9pmCT Thursday and Friday and very early in the morning on Saturday. Blue Raider Band Director Anthony Baird is also in need of a box truck or a rental donation to make the three-and-a-half-hour drive to Newport. "I'll be calling around today looking for a truck that can be donated to transport the water donations on Saturday," he said. The Newport community is especially dear to Baird, who grew up in eastern Tennessee. State Drought Declaration removed From John Mura Frankfort, KY - The Office of the State Climatologist and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, in coordination with the Kentucky Drought Mitigation Team, have removed Level 1 Drought Declarations for all 120 counties in the commonwealth. Recent precipitation from the remnants of Hurricane Helene have eliminated rain deficits and improved streamflows and soil moisture levels. The drought declarations were issued on September 23, 2024, when moderate to severe drought conditions had developed statewide. Since that time, several days of precipitation from the remnants of Hurricane Helene have eased conditions. The light to moderate precipitation over several days allowed for water to infiltrate into the soil column, returning soil moisture to pre-summer levels. Streamflows have returned to normal and there are no current concerns with drinking water supplies. The Kentucky Division of Water will continue to monitor water supplies throughout the commonwealth. John Richard Smith, 75, Cumberland County, KY John Richard Smith, 75, of Burkesville, KY, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. He was born September 24, 1948, to the late John Clifton "Bud" and Georgia (Vincent) Smith. He was of the Christian faith and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. National Guard and was a longtime truck driver. He was also a member of Peolia Church in Albany, KY. Deborah Roberts, 60, Russell Springs, KY (1964-2024) Deborah Roberts, 60, of Russell Springs, KY, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She was born in Somerset, KY, on July 11, 1964, to the late Waldo and Alta Stargel Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Roberts, and a brother, Randy Smith. Mrs. Roberts was a certified nursing assistant. She loved her family dearly and was known for her caring nature. October is National Pedestrian Safety Month From Marla Marrs Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear, who has made public health and safety a top priority of his administration, is encouraging Kentuckians to work together to ensure our roadways are safe for everyone. "October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and we're asking everyone to do their part to watch out for each other on the roads," said Gov. Beshear. "If drivers and pedestrians alike look out for one another, we can help ensure everyone gets home safely." The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote safe driving and walking tips throughout October. Staying alert is especially important as the end of Daylight Saving Time approaches and nightfall comes earlier. According to NHTSA, most crash-related pedestrian fatalities occur at night. KBC Blood Drive on October 8 From Debbie Morrow There will be a community blood drive from 1pmCT to 5pmCT on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the Columbia Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 501 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY. In recognition of national awareness of cancer in September and October, all donors who give blood will receive a "Fight Cancer" T-shirt as a thank you for their lifesaving donation. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome.
