Fox chase a few days before Christmas 1869

By C.J. Taylor. --Adair County News, 22 August 1900

A Christmas Fox Chase--A few days before Christmas, in the year 1869, I was notified that there would be a red fox turned loose near Gradyville, this county, on Christmas day, and that everybody was invited to attend and bring with them all the dogs they could muster. I accordingly mounted my horse at 8 o'clock on the appointed morning, and started for the grand rally.

I rode rapidly, for fear of being too late, until I arrived within about two miles of the appointed place; when upon a high hill I stopped and was notified by blasts from at least one hundred horns, trumpets, conchs, and bugles of every size and note that everybody, with his friend, was making one grand rally for the appointed place.

New fees for electric and hybrid vehicles begin Jan. 1, 2024

From Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - Under the terms of two state laws that take effect on New Year's Day, owners of electric vehicles and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles in Kentucky will soon pay new fees for registering or charging up at public stations

Passage of the legislation, which was House Bill 360 in the 2023 Kentucky General Assembly, was a significant development for the long-term stability of the Kentucky Road Fund. It ensured that EV and hybrid owners pay a fair share of the cost of building and maintaining Kentucky's transportation infrastructure.

The new, annual ownership fee structure under Kentucky law includes the following:
  • $120 for electric vehicles
  • $60 for hybrids
  • $60 for electric motorcycles
These fees are directed into the Road Fund, which pays for road construction, maintenance, engineering, planning and research as well as administrative functions to keep the Kentucky transportation network moving.

KY license plates stay with drivers beginning in 2024

From Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - Building on the state's plans to migrate from an outdated vehicle registration database to a modern, more efficient system beginning in January, Kentuckians will now keep their license plates when transferring vehicle ownership- a move that will improve convenience and save money for Kentuckians.

This is a change from the current practice where plates were linked to the vehicle.

"Upgrading to a new vehicle information system unlocks opportunities for us to implement new ways to make the process of transferring vehicle ownership better for Kentuckians, and in some cases, keep more money in their pockets," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray.

Kentuckians will now retain both unexpired registration and the license plate when transferring ownership- a common practice when selling a vehicle. Also, owners of specialty license plates - nonprofit and military plates - will save money by no longer paying for a standard license plate to go with the transferred vehicle and paying to place their specialty plate on the new vehicle.

Letter: Sulphur Well

Martha Berry writes:
This seems to be a day for nostalgia. I have just received Byron Crawford's new book and have been reliving, in memory, some of the things that he reminds me of.

And now the article about Sulpher Well. Dad and Mr. King Crenshaw would sit on that wonderful porch talking, solving all the world's problems, while we would be at the spring tasting the water. BTW, sulphur water must be an acquired taste. In a little while, we would be called to the hotel for dinner. The fried chicken was the best of anywhere. Ah, memories. A walk back in time.
