State software upgrade will affect Adair Co. Clerk's Office

From Lisa Greer
Adair County Clerk

Kentucky will be implementing an upgrade to the system which processes all motor vehicle transactions in all of the County Clerks offices in the state, beginning at the close of business on December 29, 2023.

Customers who need to renew vehicles tags in December, or customers who have not renewed tags from any previous month for 2023, are urged to consider completing all transactions by December 29, 2023.

Important: Customers who are scheduled to renew in January 2024, unfortunately, cannot renew in December because the 2024 tax rates and assessments are not loaded until after the close of business on December 29, 2023.

The Adair County Clerk's motor vehicle department will make every attempt to open as soon as possible once we go live, but we are expecting to be closed for Motor Vehicle transactions from January 1 to January 16, 2024. During this closure, our recording and elections departments will be open. We will strive to keep everyone posted as we get updates and as changes occur.

We will be open regular hours in December/January except for the following:

LWC Bonner Scholars provide 52 warm coats for area children

More than 50 Adair County children will have a warmer winter thanks to the Lindsey Wilson College Bonner Scholars Program.

LWC Director of Civic Engagement and Student Leadership Kisha Burton and Bonner Scholar Coordinator Yayi Sonnabend led a donation effort this fall that collected 52 new winter coats for area children of low-income families. The coats were delivered to Adair County Head Start students and their siblings on Wednesday.

According to Burton, the LWC Bonner Scholars Coats For Kids program wouldn't be possible without the faithful generosity of the community and the College.

"It means so much to me to see this program continue and provide such an important resource for people who have the greatest need," said Burton who has served as Lindsey Wilson's director of civic engagement for two years. "Every year the community and the faculty and staff of LWC generously provide either a new coat or monetary support. I want to thank everyone who has made this project possible again."

The LWC Bonner Scholars Coats For Kids Drive began 12 years ago and has provided more than 700 children with new winter coats during that time.

Will surging KY voter registration mean high turnout in 2024?

From Michon Lindstrom

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams has announced that voter registration surged in the weeks following the 2023 general election, with 10,607 new registrations from November 8 through 30, 2023.

"Surging voter registration reminds us that we must prepare for a high turnout in the 2024 election," said Adams.

Adams reminds Kentuckians who wish to update their political party affiliation to do so by December 31, in order to be eligible to vote in the May 21, 2024 primary in the party of their choice. By law, a voter who is registered as a Democrat or Independent after December 31, 2023 will not be able to vote in May's Republican primary, and a voter who is registered as a Republican or Independent after December 31, 2023 will not be able to vote in May's Democratic primary. This rule does not apply to voters newly registered after the first of the year.

Congratulations to the ACMS KYA Teams!

Students from Adair County Middle School, led by Advisor Candice Flatt, competed in the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) for the first time on December 3-5, 2023.

The Kentucky Youth Assembly is an experiential learning program in which students serve as part of a model state government. KYA offers students the opportunity to learn and debate policy issues, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their beliefs while engaging with peers from around Kentucky.

The ACMS students at KYA this year were Hunter Ballou, Sallie Ballou, Josie Blair, Addie Bowman, Maddie Burkhardt, Madi Burns, Bowen Furkin, Jay Harmon, Addie McMinnoway, Emily Smith, Cole Stockton, Pierce Stotts, and Maddie Wethington.

One officer at the conference said Adair County's debate teams were "phenomenal". The middle schoolers brought home numerous awards for their hard work and dedication, including Premier Delegation, and had one bill pass the House and one pass both the House and Senate.

Flatt says, "These are tremendous results, especially for a first-year debate team! We cannot wait to return to KYA next year with experience behind us and more awards in our hands! Congratulations to the ACMS KYA Team!"
