Pets top activities in the holiday season

People love spoiling their pets for the holidays. And dressing them.

According to a survey by Chewy, a whopping 94 percent of pet owners include their pets in the holidays and 58 percent plan to buy their pet two or three gifts.

Colin Cornell-MacKenzie was among the shoppers discovering what's new in holiday specials in Columbia during late night shopping. Nanwood Market is one of the retail stores that stays open until nine for "To The Nines" every first Friday. The lights were on all around the Public Square December 1st and the place was packed.

Lois DeMumbrum, 76, Edmonton, KY (1947-2023)

Annie Lois DeMumbrum was born June 17, 1947, and passed away December 01, 2023, at Metcalfe County Health Care. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mary England and son-in-law Brian Goldsmith.

Lois was a homemaker, worked at Western Auto, was a cook in the school system, and worked as a CNA at TJ Samson Hospital. She had been retired for several years.

Larry Gadberry, 81, Taylor County, KY (1941-2023)

Larry Gadberry of Campbellsville, born December 27, 1941, died at age 81 on December 4, 2023.

He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was decorated with the Purple Heart award for his sacrifices in the Vietnam War. He was a former co-owner with his wife, Margaret, of Lee's Famous Recipe in Greensburg for twenty two years. He was a stock car driver who enjoyed racing, as well as playing cornhole and horseshoe, fishing, and watching the Cincinnati Reds and Kentucky basketball.

Rachel Meadows, 69, Green County, KY (1954-2023)

Rachel Lou Young Meadows was born September 24, 1954, in Metcalfe County, KY to the late Thurman and Rachel Bernice Davis Young. She departed this life Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the U of L Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY, having attained the age of sixty-nine years, two months and nine days.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of South Summersville Baptist Church. She worked at Fruit of the Loom until closing. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant.

LWC to hold 2 ceremonies for largest winter commencement in school history

Lindsey Wilson College will award 632 degrees on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at its 118th commencement ceremony.

This will be the largest winter commencement for the 120-year-old liberal arts college. LWC will hold two ceremonies to accommodate the large crowd. Graduates have been allotted tickets for guests in attendance.

The first ceremony will take place at 10amCT on December 9, in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY. The Saturday morning event will recognize students earning the following degrees: Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and Doctorate of Philosophy.

The second ceremony will take place at 2pmCT on December 9, in Biggers Sports Center. The Saturday afternoon event will recognize students earning the following degrees: Master of Science and Master of Business Administration.

Mary Ernestine Bennett, 86, Columbia, KY (1937-2023)

Mary Ernestine (Moss) Bennett of Columbia passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at her residence. She was 86 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 10amCT on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Steve Coffey officiating. Burial will follow in the Morris Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Adair Team qualifies for National Quizbowl Tournament

Two Adair County Quizbowl teams competed in the Carolyn Hawkins Memorial Tournament on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Cookeville High School in Cookeville, TN.

The A Team--made up of Trey Stephens, Bailey Watts, Andrew Zinati, and Christopher Armenti--posted a third place finish, and the teams qualified for NAQT and PACE national competition for the first time since 2018.

NAQT Nationals will be held May 24-26, 2024, in Atlanta, GA, and the PACE Nationals are in Reston, VA, on June 8 and 9, 2024.

2023 Adair Co. Band Christmas Concert and Spaghetti Lunch

The annual Adair Co. Band Spaghetti Lunch will be held at 12:30pmCT on Sunday, December 10, 2023, in the Adair County Middle School Cafeteria. Plates will be $10, and will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, and a drink. We will also be hosting a dessert auction throughout the event.

The Adair County Band Christmas Concert will be taking place at 2pmCT on Sunday, December 10, 2023, in the gymnasium at Adair County Middle School. The concert will feature performances from our beginning band, middle school band, and high school band. The students have put together a fantastic concert that we look forward to showcasing to the community, and we would look forward to seeing you there!

Adair County Middle School is located at 322 General John Adair Dr., Columbia, KY.

Track and Field: LWC at Commonwealth College Opener

Louisville, KY - The Lindsey Wilson track and field teams competed in the Commonwealth College Opener over the weekend in Louisville, KY.

The men grabbed a win in the opener thanks to junior Logan Bullock and his impressive performance in the 1 mile event where he recorded a time of 4:35.31. In the same event, Blake Mulling finished fifth with a time of 4:48:48.

The women had nine top ten finishes throughout the day, with the strongest performances in the 500m and the 1000m. Freshman Alejandra Recarey finished in third in the 500m with a time of 1:25.90. In the 1000m, freshman Clayra Darnell came in sixth with a time of 3:12.71, followed by Olivia Rudder, Alexandra Solis, and Macey Wilson in seventh, ninth, and tenth, respectively.

In the men's 1000m, two junior Blue Raiders finished inside the top five with Nolan Foushee obtaining second place with a time "B" standard time of 2:29.69. and Justin Stearns earning fourth place with a "B" standard time of 2:30.40. Concluding the top five finishers across all events was Marti Mollins with a fourth place finish in the 500m with a time of 1:08.89.

Nov 28 Fiscal Court meeting notes

In addition to regular business and other agenda items, the court approved a number of road projects, approved hiring an Occupational Tax Director, discussed issues at the 911 Center, approved the auction of the Adair Friends and Neighbors building, approved $70k to hire a 2nd Sheriff's deputy and purchase a vehicle, and noted the resignation from clerk duties by Bridget Compton who will remain the Deputy Judge Executive.

Ricky Lee Whittle, 50, Russell County, KY (1973-2023)

Ricky Lee Whittle, of Jamestown, passed away Sunday December 3, 2023, in London, Kentucky. He was 50 years of age.

Born January 3, 1973, he was a son of the late Gary Lee and Helen Jean Hammonds Whittle. Ricky enjoyed fishing whenever he had the chance, but he really loved to travel and just "do his own thing."
