Knifley Road reopened to through traffic

Adair County, KY Hwy 551 has reopened to through traffic as of Friday according to folks living on and driving that route along with the word from District 8 State Department of Highways.

551 had been restricted to one lane in the area between Hwy 901 and David Butler Road for replacement of culverts.

Christmas in Columbia 2023: out of county second place

Free Union Separate Baptist Church from Russell County was the Christmas in Columbia out of county second place winning float. Their theme was "Jesus is a Lifesaver." The reflections in the wet pavement gave them double exposure.

Betty Lou Brown, 81, Russell County, KY (1942-2023)

Betty Lou Stapp Brown, of Jamestown, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023, at her home. She was 81 years of age.

She lived for her family and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She cherished every moment she had with her family, calling to check on her "boys" every day. She also loved playing the piano. Her and her sister, Peggy, frequently visited nursing homes to sing gospel hymns and play for the residents. Betty Lou was passionate about decorating homes while working as a Home Interiors decorator. Betty was also a mother to many children while serving as a foster parent with her husband Otha for several years.

Alvleen Bernard, 90, Casey County, KY (1933-2023)

Alvleen Terry Bernard, of Dunnville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, December 1, 2023. She was 90.

She was a longtime faithful member of the Dunnville Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and was well known for her quilting. She was lovingly known as Gia, Mawmaw, and Granny B. Born July 16, 1933, in Casey County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Alvie Franklin Terry and Orine Smith Terry.

Previous Column: Community involvement a lost art?

Kids can be mean, especially towards each other. This statement isn't groundbreaking; we all acknowledge its truth. Most of us have encountered it in one form or another. I'm not justifying this behavior, but it's a reality we all must face at some point.

While the taunts on the playground may have evolved in terms, the fundamental meaning remains constant. "Garbage" has replaced "loser," and "freak" now stands in for "geek." Terms that target a person's race, ethnicity or sexual preferences appear to be constantly evolving.

However, a label I was branded with seems to have faded away. While this might sound positive, my concern is that it's because the underlying reason is becoming rarer.

Governor, First Lady, Santa to light state Christmas tree Dec 9

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and First Lady Britainy Beshear invite Kentuckians to view the Frankfort Christmas Parade and to join them on the South Lawn of the Capitol for the lighting of the state's Christmas tree on Saturday, December 9, 2023.

The parade will begin at 6pmET on High Street and will make its way up Capital Avenue by police escort. The floats and vehicles will wrap behind the Capitol, in front of the Annex, where the Governor and First Lady will greet guests. Santa Claus will arrive on the final float of the parade. Following the parade, the First Family and Santa will light the state Christmas tree.

2023 Christmas Parade: Winning floats

Despite rainy conditions, the 2023 Columbia Christmas Parade, A Magical Christmas, took place on Saturday evening, December 2, 2023, with acclaimed magician Lance Burton serving as Parade Master.

Entries in the Columbia Christmas Parade were given the option to be judged for prizes, and the Columbia Church of Christ float earned top honors among in-county entries, followed by TJ Health Columbia and then the FFA in third place. Taylor Co RECC took first place for their float in the Out-of-Town category.

2024 KDA internship application period now open

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky college students seeking a career in agriculture or government are encouraged to apply for positions in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's (KDA's) internship program for the 2024 summer. In addition to agriculture, KDA interns may work in education, computer science, marketing, communications, pre-law, and other fields. Internships will run from June to August.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or vocational-technical program. Applicants can be enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate school.

To apply, download and complete the application on the KDA's website at kyagr.com/marketing/internship-program.html.
