Write checks with black gel pens to prevent fraud

By Kathy Parker

We were the victims of check washing! If you are not familiar with this crime, thieves will steal a check from your mailbox, post office, or outgoing mail. They will put a piece of tape over the signature, put the check in a solution that will erase anything written, and then dry the check. Then it will be rewritten to anyone for any amount, and your signature remains on the check.

The checks stolen from us were mailed inside the Columbia Post Office and never made it to the mail distribution center in northern Florida. They were cashed in Colorado and Arizona.

Our bank did refund us the money, but I have spent hours on the phone and online closing an account, moving money, opening a new account, filing reports with law enforcement and USPS, and freezing our credit.

If you must write checks and especially if you must mail checks, buy black gel pens to use. That ink bleeds into the check paper and is much harder to wash. It's a small expense that could save you much time and money.
