Carol Perkins: Red or Gold

Previous Column: White Hair

By Carol Perkins

Guy and I have the same conversation every year during Thanksgiving week.

"We never put Christmas decorations up this early," he declares.

I counter, "We put them up Thanksgiving weekend every year. You've just forgotten."

He replies, "I don't forget anything."

I wish he remembered less because I can't trick him. He remembers the days when the tree went up on Carla's birthday, December 16. It usually coincided with the last day of school before vacation, and he wants to continue THAT tradition.

Thanksgiving activities 1938

By JIM

This image (see photo with article) graced the top center of the front page of the Adair County News the day before Thanksgiving, 1938.

In a twist of irony, sports news consumed nearly 20% of the front page space. An article about the Linsdey Wilson basketball team (captained by one John Burr, lately of Toledo, Ohio), the individual players, an upcoming Blue Raiders v "old timers" game, and the upcoming season schedule occupied just short of a full column, and the sad news of the Columbia Red Hounds come-from-ahead loss to the Burkesville Panthers took a chunk out of another column.

Elsewhere on page one, details of the annual Thanksgiving services in Columbia earned a headline and four sentences of text across the fold.
