Soft lockdown required at schools due to suspect search By Adair County School Superintendent Jason Faulkner At approximately 1:00 PM, Wednesday November 8th, 2023, we were informed of a suspect that was fleeing the local authorities and had made his way towards our campus. We immediately called a "Soft Lockdown". This safety measure requires all students to remain within the building, locks down all individual schools on campus at their exterior access points, and prohibits entry for all unauthorized personnel. Instapot Class at Extension Office From Dylan Gentry, FCS Agent Adair County Cooperative Extension Service Join us for a fun session learning how to use a popular appliance around the holidays, the Instapot, at NoonCT on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. Instapots are very versatile appliances that can be used to slow cook, dehydrate, and make soup, amongst other functions for large quantities. An Instapot is a particular type of pressure cooker which uses built-up pressure to quickly cook dishes. Since the Instapot uses pressure to cook, some may worry about the safety of the product. In this course we will cover all the safety essentials plus make a tasty recipe sure to please your guests this Holiday season. Turkey Bowl Quiz Bowl held at ACHS The Adair County Quizbowl Club was host for the Adair Turkey Bowl on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Students competed to answer questions on a wide variety of academic subjects. There were 7 schools in attendance, including Adair, Casey, and Russell County High Schools, and four teams from Tennessee: Cookeville High School, University School of Nashville, Gallatin High School, and Portland High School. The Adair County High School A Team, comprised of Trey Stephens, Bailey Watts, Joe Kotter and Andrew Zinati, fared best among the local teams, finishing in 6th place overall. 2023 General Election results in Adair Co. In Adair County for the November 7, 2023 Kentucky General Election, 5,309 ballots were cast, from a pool of 13,975 registered voters. With no local or national races on the ballot, the 37.99% turnout was down from 45.9% in the 2022 General Election, which featured a large slate of candidates for local offices. Straight Party votes went overwhelmingly for the Republican ticket in 2023. Of 2,578 straight party votes, 82.37% were for the Republican ticket. Voters who chose individual candidates followed a similar pattern, with all but one Republican candidate collecting around 80% of the total votes in Adair County (and nearly 60 percent statewide). Bucking that trend, incumbent Governor Andy Beshear appears to have picked up some voters across party lines on his way to reelection, with 32% of 5,285 Adair County votes in the Governor's race, compared to 68% for the Cameron ticket. Gov. Beshear also improved in Adair County since his first run for Governor. Against incumbent Matt Bevin in the 2019 General Election, Beshear collected only 29% of Adair County votes. Ralph Sharp, 70, Cumberland County, KY (1953-2023) Ralph Wade Sharp of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at having attained the age of 70 years, 5 months, and 17 days. He was born in Burkesville, Kentucky on Tuesday, May 19, 1953 to Millard Clint and Christine (Blythe) Sharp. He was a graduate of the Cumberland County High School, class of 1971 and worked as an oil inspector for the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals. He enjoyed flying, riding motorcycles, golfing and going boating as well as spending time with his family. Lawmakers explore legislation to reduce maternal mortality From Nancy Royden, LRC Frankfort, KY -- Legislators heard from one of their own on Monday about proposals to shore up maternal health in Kentucky - a state described during testimony as having the second highest maternal mortality rate in the United States. "I am very happy to be with you today to discuss a bill draft that I have worked on throughout the summer with a very nice bipartisan, bicameral, informal workgroup discussing maternal health," said Rep.
