National survey shows drop in vaping among high schoolers On November 2, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), released data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) on tobacco product use among U.S. youth. The findings, which were collected between March and June 2023, show that 10% of U.S. middle and high school students (2.8 million youth) reported current use of any tobacco product. Among U.S. high school students, current overall tobacco product use declined during 2022-2023 (16.5% to 12.6%). This decline was primarily attributable to reduced e-cigarette use (14.1% to 10%), which translates to 580,000 fewer high school students who reported current use of e-cigarettes in 2023. Among high school students, declines in current use were also observed during 2022-2023 for cigars and overall combustible tobacco smoking, representing all-time lows. Carol Perkins: Hayrides Previous Column: On a Shoebox Mission By Carol Perkins On my way to my mom's house just outside of Edmonton, I fell behind a wagon filled with young people (and maybe older ones, too). A HAYRIDE! Immediately, flashes of my teenage years dashed before me. Largely because of my church youth group sponsors, we teens were treated to a hayride and bonfire on the farm of our adult members. They went to a lot of trouble for us and, looking back, I realize they had as much fun as we did. Before my friends and I were dating age, the excitement of a hayride, which included any other young person who wanted to go with us, was wondering with whom we would sit in the wagon. That was very important. Would one of the guys single out one of the girls and edge his way to the bed of straw and ease out his long legs beside her? Would the guy with whom one girl might want to sit, want to sit with some other girl, and her heart be broken? KY lawmakers share plan to extend ATV pilot program From Jordan Hensley, LRC Frankfort, KY - Two Eastern Kentucky lawmakers are hoping to extend a pilot program that allows ATVs to use state highways to get from one portion of a trail to another. Sen. Phillip Wheeler, R-Pikeville, and Rep. Chris Fugate, R-Chavies, worked on adding the pilot program to an omnibus transportation measure, Senate Bill 215, during the 2021 legislative session. SB 215 in 2021 gave local governments the ability to petition the state for permission to use a state highway to connect one portion of an ATV recreation trail to another. The program is set to expire on July 1, 2024, Wheeler and Fugate told the Interim Joint Committee on Transportation on Wednesday. Wheeler said they hope to extend the program another 36 months with new legislation in 2024. Any registered Adair County voter may vote during these 3 days with no excuse. A proof of ID will be required. Reminder: There will be no voting anywhere in Adair County on Monday, November 6, 2023. UK, UofL Gift of Life College Challenge The University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville are keeping their rivalry and competitive spirit alive while inspiring thousands to join the Donor Registry with the 22nd year of the Gift of Life College Challenge. Starting November 1, 2023, both universities are engaging in a spirited competition to determine which school's community can register the highest number of new organ, eye and tissue donors. Since its inception in 2001, the Gift of Life Challenge has seen college students, faculty, coaches and staff actively promote organ donation registration. KSP Post 15 to conduct Traffic Safety Checkpoints From Trooper Jonathan Houk Kentucky State Police Post 15 will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell, Casey, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, and Cumberland counties. These checkpoints will be conducted as part of Post 15's highway safety efforts.
