Trucks have hardest time during festivals

There has to be a better way for big trucks to get around downtown Columbia than this. City Police directed drivers into the small alley that is is use when the Public Square is closed off for special events like Treats on the Town. Maybe we can hear from some who drive through town how they avoid the congestion at festival and celebration times. The bypass is there for traffic going north/south 55 and 61, but what if a truck is coming from East 80 trying to get to north 55? Is there a way? If you know, please click 'comment' below and share.

Marsha Lynn Brower, 67, Russell County, KY (1956-2023)

Marsha Lynn Hudson Brower, of Russell Springs, passed away Thursday October 26, 2023, at UK Chandler Medical Center, in Lexington. She was 67 years of age.

Born April 9, 1956, in Clinton County, she was a daughter of the late Hubert and Joyce Burchett Hudson. Marsha enjoyed working outside in her flowers and spending time with her family.

JAG Program ribbon cutting held at ACHS

Adair County students in the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program welcomed members of the community to their ribbon cutting ceremony last Wednesday.

A good crowd attended the ceremony to show support to Adair County's youth. Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young people of promise.

JAG KY is an affiliate of Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG), www.jag.org, a national non-profit organization dedicated to reconnecting students academically by helping them overcome barriers to graduation and helping them transition into postsecondary education, the workforce or the military after graduation.

Mahlon C. Coblentz, 44, Columbia, KY (1979-2023)

Mahlon C. Coblentz of Columbia passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Elkhart, IN. He was 44 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Paul Grider officiating. Burial will follow in the Pellyton Cemetery.

First LCDHD Director honored by Hall of Fame

Lexington, KY - The University of Kentucky School of Public Health Hall of Fame has posthumously honored Dr. Millard A. Shepherd, MD, with the Hume Medallion Award.

Dr. Shepherd dreamed of creating a health district or region in Kentucky and he was instrumental in the creation of the Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD). He also served as its first Director from its creation on July 1, 1971, until his retirement in 1980.

LCDHD was the first District Health Department in the state of Kentucky. It initially included Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Pulaski, and Wayne Counties. In 1982, Adair, Casey, Green, Russell, and Taylor Counties joined the district bringing the total member counties to 10.

During his tenure at LCDHD, Dr. Shepherd initiated the practice of fluoridating drinking water in the district, reducing the risk of dental disease and decay. He was proactive in getting vaccinations in public schools and vaccinated his own children for polio and smallpox as public examples for the benefit of vaccinations.

"Lake Cumberland District Health Department has always been innovative and ground breaking in the public health circles of Kentucky," said Executive Director Amy Tomlinson. "It is humbling to know that we are continuing to carry on the legacy of this visionary man, Dr. M A Shepherd. The health and well-being of the citizens of Lake Cumberland are always at the front of our minds and the center of every decision we make."

Cindy Lou (Akin) Hughes of Bowling Green, formerly of Adair County, died on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at her home. She was 65 years old.

Jason Tyler Knight of Bowling Green, and formerly of Columbia, passed away suddenly Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at his residence. He was 33 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Jimmy Dale Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the Bearwallow Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday from NoonCT until 8pmCT, and will continue Saturday until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

TJCMF announces Samsonville Square

The T.J. Community Mission Foundation is pleased to announce a new capital project, Samsonville Square. Samsonville Square will be an approximately 3,200 square feet "REAL Therapy" simulation clinical space located at the T.J. Rehabilitation Services clinic at the T.J. Health Pavilion in Glasgow, KY.

"REAL Therapy" is an acronym for Realistic Environment Applied Learning and is a community simulation environment of ready-made functional therapy tasks available for patients and clinicians from the moment they enter the room. Clinical rehab facilities such as this are incredibly unique, especially in the outpatient setting, and will allow our staff to provide a second to none rehabilitation and therapy experience.

Samsonville Square will feature 12 real world simulation modules such as a fully functioning kitchen, grocery store, and virtual reality car simulator, among other things.

Concessions for Adair Co. Little League Basketball

Due to concerns brought to my attention, we will not sell any chocolate candy at games due to nut allergies. I ask that nobody bring any item that is chocolate candy or nuts. We will sell pizza, cokes, Gatorade, water, chips, and Skittles. This is being done to protect children and the ever-increasing prevalence of nut allergies among small youth.

We also request that if your child is sick, please stay home. We do not need to know the nature of the illness, but please stay home if your child is suffering from any kind of illness.

Parent input sought for ACES 21st CCLC Continuum

Your concerns and questions are needed for the ACES 21st CCLC Continuum. The 21st CCLC grant program provides out-of-school academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment to students at risk of academic failure who attend high poverty and low-performing schools. The purpose is to provide students with homework assistance and enrichment activities that complement the regular academic programs during the school day. Services include homework assistance, youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, character development, conflict resolution, counseling, and family engagement activities.

To provide input about the design and development of these programs and discuss how to best meet our students' needs, please contact Beth Wethington by November 10, 2023, at 270-384-0077, ext 4115, during the hours of NoonCT to 2pmCT Monday through Friday. Kynect enrollment begins Nov 1 for 2024 health, dental benefits

Frankfort, KY - Beginning today, Kentuckians can shop and enroll for health and dental coverage on the state-based marketplace, kynect.

Enrollment is open Nov. 1, 2023, through Jan. 16, 2024. Kentuckians who sign up on or before Dec. 15, 2023, will have a coverage start date of Jan. 1, 2024. Those who sign up on Dec. 16 through the last day of enrollment will be eligible for coverage that starts on Feb. 1, 2024.

Kentuckians who don't have coverage through another source, such as through an employer, Medicaid, the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program, Medicare or TRICARE, can start shopping on November 1 for individual coverage on kynect.

Letter: Colorful trees

When we lived in northern Virginia, we experienced beautiful fall weather with colorful trees. Then we moved to southern California. Our oldest son was in kindergarten at the time.

In his California kindergarten, the teacher passed out pages with outlines of the outside and trees to color. Son Doug told me later that when he colored yellow, red, orange trees, his classmates exclaimed, "Trees are green!" "Trees aren't yellow, orange and red!" Of course, he had seen colorful trees, and the teacher could explain. He was surprised they didn't know about colorful trees. I wonder what they told their parents about the 'new kid' that colored trees red, yellow and orange?

Letter: New US 127 bridge over Cumberland River

I don't have an answer for the question, but my thoughts are that Wolf Creek Dam is the most monitored (instumentarized) dam in the world. Even with the walls that were installed in it -- the 1970's wall and the new one that goes down to the bedrock, it is not foolproof.

The Army Corps of Engineers wants the traffic of US 127 off of the dam. They were also against the idea of a bridge for 127 to cross upstream from the dam because of the loss of water storage capacity a bridge would cause. Looking at the new bridge at Burnside I can't see where that would be a huge problem. I expect if the dam were to fail on its own it would be somewhat gradual, giving enough time for at least a little warning for people downstream to get out of the way.

My concern of a failure would be sudden catastrophic failure such as the type that would be caused by something like a bomb. The loss of a bridge 2 or 3 miles in comparison pales in comparison to the loss of lives of people in the Cumberland valley downstream from the dam. Burkesville would be wiped out, Nashville would be flooded, plus all the other towns downstream from the dam. So my concern for the loss of a bridge is way less than other losses that would occur if the dam failed.

CPD: Investigation leads to additional charges for ARJ inmate

The Columbia Police Department served an indictment warrant on a current Adair Regional Jail inmate on October 31, 2023. The investigation began after male subject was originally apprehended and extradited from Grundy, Tennessee, for an unrelated case involving a male and an underage female.

A now-adult female came forward, stating the party and she had a relationship in 2017, when the female was 13 at the time. After interviewing the female, an investigation into the matter began with the findings presented to grand jury where subject was indicted.
