Letter: Columbia Theater

Kerry Robertson writes:
When is the Columbia Theater going to open? When will it be able to host functions and performances? What with all the attention on the new school and the old courthouse, it appears that Columbia and Adair County have entirely forgotten about the Theater. Didn't we get a grant to renovate it? My impression was that it was almost finished but that was months ago? So, what is up with that?
Kerry, it's a good question. Our last update on 9/29 was that the renovation project "has been placed on hold by the Adair School District." However, a time for Public Comments is on the agenda of Thursday's school board meeting...

Letter: The Bryan Sims Miller home

JIM writes:
Mention of the Bryan Sims Miller home in Crocus brings to mind another Miller connection to the house. Bryan's nephew, James Claude (who generally went either by J.C. or his middle name) designed the house. (J.C. was the son of Bryan's half brother, Dr. James Otho Miller.)

A brief item in mid-March 1912 noted the residence was almost finished and stated "it is said to the handsomest two-story frame residence in Adair county" and added, "It is a modern plan and will have all conveniences."

J.C. went to become a general contractor of some note in the region. His work in Columbia included the First Baptist Church building (the one that burned in 1928), the Lindsey Wilson gymnasium, and the new Bank of Columbia Building.

KTC: Antler Alert reminds drivers of deer hazards

From Lisa Jackson/Chris Jessie

Elizabethtown, KY - The annual "Antler Alert" issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reminds motorists that the peak season for deer-vehicle collisions is upon us. About half of all deer-related crashes occur during the last three months of the year, with November having the most.

"As our traffic engineers review data for crash trends across the Commonwealth, the increase in deer-vehicle collisions in October, November, and December is noticeable, with a peak in November," KYTC Secretary Jim Gray said. "That's why we take time each year to remind drivers to use extra caution now through December as deer and other wildlife are on the move. While deer can show up at all hours, they create a particular hazard at dusk and at night when visibility is not the greatest."

According to Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Acting Deer Program Coordinator Joe McDermott, deer mating season is triggered by shorter days and cooler nights, putting deer on the move. Farmers harvesting crops contribute to this movement as deer are forced to range farther afield for forage and hiding places. Pressure from hunters also contributes to deer activity.
