Some (mostly) front page advertising, mid-October, 1928

Ninety-five years ago this week, the New York Yankees had swept the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the World Series just a few days earlier. By mid-October, the US stock market had increased by well over 20% for the year, but the recently completed Series drew considerably more attention than did the underlying weakness in the U.S. economy's house of cards. But meanwhile, back in The Shire:

By JIM

Ralph Gilbert, seeking a fifth term as a U.S. Congressman, solemnly stated via paid advertising that "The greatest danger that confronts the American people today is that of sending men who talk 'Dry' and are 'Wet to the U.S. Senate and Congress..."

Mrs. R.W. (Leona) Hurt, milliner of Gadberry, invited the ladies to pay call to see her line of "Beautiful new hats." Another front page "card," this one from Russell & Co., also invited women to "Meet our salesman Wed., Oct 17, and if you have had trouble getting your size in a coat, let him fit you right."

R.B. Reeves, of Ozark, wanted to sell a pair of good work mules, Bennett Motor Co. offered a number of used autos, including a "Ford roadster, starter and everything," and W.E. Harris offered "Nice picked Indiana pears" for sale.

Knowledge and empowerment at HGR Conference Weekend

By Lyn Stanton, Program Director
Homeplace on Green River

Beginning in January of this year, Homeplace on Green River and the Homestead Education Program have been working together to plan and prepare The Second Annual Heartland Homesteading Conference! After all the preparations and anticipation, the event finally took place in perfect early fall weather from September 29 to October 1, 2023, and was a great success.

Over the weekend, we had nearly 200 participants engage in more than 30 distinct learning sessions led by over 20 experts and enthusiasts. With everything from beekeeping to permaculture, tanning to butchering, essential oils to herbal medicine for goats, and cultivating fruit trees to pressure canning, the weekend was chalked to the brim with in-depth, hands-on practical skill-building sessions designed to help both the beginner and advanced homesteader alike.

Our volunteer instructors were incredibly generous with their time, and participants were eager to learn everything they could. Many instructors were local, including several youth leaders from the Taylor County 4H, folks from the county extension offices, our area farmers, and accomplished gardeners and homesteaders.
