Columbia City Council October 2023 report

Mayor Pamela Hoots and all members of the Columbia City Council came together Monday night for the October 2, 2023 regular meeting.

Among the highlights was the appointment of Charles Greer as new Columbia Police Department Chief. He replaces retiring Chief Jr Murphy. Greer has served in law enforcement for 18 years. He was sworn in by the Mayor immediately following the Council meeting.

Charles Greer chosen new Columbia PD Chief

Charles Greer was chosen as new Columbia Police Department Chief in a unanimous vote by the City Council at Monday night's meeting. He was sworn in by the Mayor immediately following the Council meeting. Standing with Greer at his left in the picture are retiring Chief Jr Murphy and former Chief Mark Harris. Former Chief Murphy said, "Chief Greer has 18 years of law enforcement experience and has consistently proven his dedication to the citizens of Columbia and the Columbia Police Department. I have great confidence in his leadership abilities and a look forward to the future of the Columbia Police Department."

Joe N. Collins, 68, Columbia, KY (1954-2023)

Joe N. Collins of Columbia passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at University of Kentucky Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY. He was 68 years old.

The funeral service will be held at NoonCT on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville St., Columbia, KY, with burial in Haven Hill Cemetery.

The family requests visitation on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 4pmCT until 9pmCT, and will continue after 6amCT on Wednesday until time for services at Grissom Martin Funeral Home.

A Masonic service will be held at 7pmCT on Tuesday evening at the funeral home, with the lodge opening for members at 6pmCT. The public is invited to attend.

Homemakers Holiday Bazaar will be Nov 18

The 2023 Adair County Homemakers Holiday Bazaar will be held from 8amCT to 1pmCT on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. All are welcome and invited! Returning this year is our Coffee Bar, with a menu full of holiday styled delights.

Also, making its debut this year is our Holiday Miniature Village Competition. Design your own holiday village display for a chance to win prize money. The deadline to register is Friday, November 3, 2023.

Oaklie Douglas of Russell Springs passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Lexington VA Health Care Center. He was 82 years of age.

CACVFD responds to burning trailer on Parkway

The Columbia - Adair County Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 05:21 hours this morning, Monday, October 2, 2023, to a mutual aid request by Metcalfe County Fire Department on a report of a fully engulfed semi fire at approximately the 34 mile marker on the Cumberland Parkway.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions on the trailer of a semi that was hauling wood pallets. The fire was quickly knocked down, and fire was contained to the semi trailer. There were eight firefighters on scene for approximately two hours.

Black History Month 5K will benefit Agape House PRC

The Second Annual Black History Month 5K and 1 mile walk will be held at 9amCT/10amET on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Millenium Park in Danville. Proceeds from this event will to The Agape House PRC in Columbia, KY. The Agape House PRC non-profit was co-founded by the late Joseph Payne to assist pregnant women and their families by offering prenatal and child development classes.

Everyone is welcome to attend. To register for the event, or for more information, visit runsignup.com. Registration ends February 23, 2024 at 11:59pmET. The 5k Run/Walk is $25, and the 1-mile Fun Walk is $20.

Millenium Park is located at 1000 Cunningham Way, Danville, KY.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

Frankfort, KY - On Oct. 2, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear, who has made public health and safety a top priority of his administration, encouraged Kentuckians to work together for the safety of everyone using our roadways.

"October is National Pedestrian Safety Month," Gov. Beshear said. "We're asking every driver to watch for pedestrians as you would if it was one of your friends or family members. We're also asking every pedestrian to be fully aware of your surroundings. Motorists and pedestrians share a responsibility to help everyone reach their destination safely - let's work together to keep our fellow Kentuckians safe."

Downtown Days: October 13 & 14, 2023

Columbia's Downtown Days festival is fast approaching.

Friday evening, October 13, 2023, will feature food trucks, kiddie train rides, the Columbia Baptist Church cornhole tournament, live music, vendor booths, line dancing performance, photography contest voting, and the Genealogy Center Homecoming

Saturday, October 14, 2023, will feature The Downtown Days Pageant, Columbia Baptist Church Pooch Parade, performances and exhibitions by The Dance Shoppe, Kickin' Kids, Damon's CTA, Car Show, Antique Tractor Show, 3Trees Church kids' games and much more.

Downtown Days 2023 will close out with a free concert featuring The Kentucky Headhunters. The concert will be held on Saturday night, October 14, 2023 on the Square in downtown Columbia.

More information, including applications for vendors and for pageants are available at downtown-days.com.

Swimming: LWC men win Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy

The Lindsey Wilson men's swimming team won the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy Saturday, and the Lindsey Wilson women's swimming team posted a runner-up finish.

The Blue Raiders men finished the two-day event with 978 points finishing over 150 points better than runner-up Aquinas. Campbellsville University finished third with 648 points, WVU Tech placed fourth with 443 points, Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel (TN) round out the team standings with 245 and 212 points, respectively.

The women's team tallied 993.50 points finishing behind Indiana Wesleyan who had 1,422.50 points in first. Aquinas finished third with 538.50 points, Campbellsville was fourth with 276 points, WVU Tech and Bethel (TN) round out the team standings with 69.50 and 60 points, respectively.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on October 7 when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to face Shawnee State.
