Silent City Tour 2023 will be Oct 9 From Mike Watson The Annual Silent City tour of the Columbia Cemetery is scheduled for 5pmCT on Monday, October 9, 2023. We have a great lineup for this Tour with the following individuals portraying interesting residents of the cemetery. The presenters include: Dave Thomas, J.D. & Ellen Zornes, Richard Phelps, LeeAnn Jessee, and Mike & Renea Watson. The first Tour was organized by the Adair County Genealogical Society with assistance of the Adair County Public Library in 2007 and we have not missed a single year--including during the pandemic. There is no charge for any of our tours--the public is always welcome. We ask that guests park at the Adair County Public Library parking lot, or along the route to the cemetery. We traditionally meet, sign in, then stroll as a group to the beginning point of the Tour. For those with physical issues, park at the Justice Center parking lot or the Farmer's Market lot and walk up to the old section of the cemetery with those who walk from the library. PT&S announces $2.76M Adair Co. investment From Crystal Staley/Brandon Mattingly Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, September 28, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear highlighted new economic growth coming to Adair County as Phillips Tank & Structure (PTS), a nationwide tank construction contractor, announced plans to build a $2.76 million fabrication shop that will create 20 new full-time jobs in the Columbia area. "Phillips Tank & Structure is a great example of the quality companies that are choosing Kentucky to locate their businesses," said Gov. Beshear. "Our economy is thriving, and PTS is a valued addition to that momentum. I want to congratulate the company on its new fabrication facility in Adair County and thank its leadership for choosing to invest in the commonwealth and our incredible workforce." PTS is acquiring 6 acres owned by the Adair County Economic Development on Development Drive in Columbia, a property previously approved for $460,000 in state support in the first round of the Kentucky Product Development Initiative. Vanessa Burton, 52, Adair County, KY (1971-2023) Vanessa Laureen Burton, of Columbia, passed away from this life on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Russell County Hospital. She was 52 years of age. Born April 18, 1971, in Columbia, she was a daughter of Phyllis Sullivan Abrell DeHart and the late Elder Ray "Joe" Abrell. Vanessa was a Special Education Teacher at Salem Elementary School and a former Assistant Curriculum Coordinator at Adair County Board of Education. She enjoyed working with youth in the Lake Cumberland Area Chrysalis Community and the Kids for Christ Program. Vanessa attended Melson Ridge Separate Baptist Community Church where she was always willing to serve the Lord. She will be missed by her family, friends, and the many others whose lives she touched with her kindness. US Drought Monitor: Abnormally Dry in Columbia According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, conditions for 42728, Columbia, Kentucky worsened from "No Drought" to "Abnormally Dry (D0)" in September, according to this week's U.S. Drought Monitor. Precipitation was 1.14 inches below normal in August, 2023. The Climate Prediction Center's September Drought Outlook, released on August 31, 2023, predicted that drought conditions would not develop in September.
