Amy and I took the kids for a quick getaway in the Smokey Mountains and ran across this pumpkin from home at Dollywood.” The sign beside the huge pumpkin reads, "Scott Bayuk, Columbia, KY, 343 pounds." Homesteading Conference returns to HGR next weekend

From Dan Koger's Public Relations Class at LWC

Bee Keeping, canning fruits and vegetables, even making goats' milk soap, are a few of the skills you can learn at the 2nd Annual Heartland Homestead Conference from Friday, September 29, 2023, through Sunday, October 1, 2023, at nearby Homeplace on Green River restoration farm and learning center.

Cost for the full weekend of homestead learning is just $70 per family, with individual and one-day rates if desired. On Friday September 29, 2023, from 3pmET to 6pmET, visitors can enter for a free Open House, to peruse many of the vendors and sample some of the homesteading course offerings.

People across the United States and in other parts of the world are learning and practicing the skills of self-sufficiency, said Homeplace on Green River Program Director Lyn Stanton.

"At its core, Homesteading is making a choice to produce the necessities of life in the home or community rather than from a store," Stanton said in describing the benefits of attending the Homesteading Conference. "The motivation for that choice may be based on health concerns, a wariness of supply lines, environmental concerns, or all of the above. Or it may just something people are doing for the fun of making things themselves."
