Farmer Appreciation Day honors farmers, their occupation

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles honored Kentucky's farmers and proclaimed September 17-23, 2023, as Farm Safety and Health Week in Kentucky at a Farmer's Appreciation and Awards Day on the Capitol Lawn on Wednesday.

"The greatest appreciation we can give our farmers is making sure they are safe on the job. Farmers face a number of risks in the course of their work, from machinery accidents, chemical exposure, unruly livestock, grain bin entrapment, severe weather, and many others," Commissioner Quarles said. "In Kentucky, we have made great strides to mitigate these risks to make farming safer than ever before, but accidents still happen. 'No One Can Take Your Place,' isn't just the theme for this year's farm safety and health week, it is the cost we pay when even one person is lost. Whether you are on the farm, on the road, or in the home, please take that extra step to protect yourself and those around you."

The inaugural Raising Hope Farmer Appreciation and Awards Day honored farmers and the job they do, while also recognizing the risks they face in their day-to-day duties.

Letter: The Real KY 430

JIM writes:
The real KY 430, better known as Jamestown St. in Russell Springs, runs from Hwy 80 over to Lakeway Dr. (old US 127) in Russell Springs. I have to wonder if an intersecting road or street there sports a new sign proclaiming "Junction 439."

Letter: Likely a Chinese Chestnut

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Linda, this is most likely Chinese Chestnut but hard to tell from a pic. Will check it out sometime soon. It is possible that it is American Chestnut but highly improbable. Would need to see some leaves to make a more accurate identification without a site visit.

The "Holey Tree" in the other picture is Black Locust. Black Locust is a legume and is kinfolk with the family's of the peas and beans that are often on our supper tables! The wood is hard, makes great fence posts and makes great firewood but since it reproduces from both seed and root sprouts, it is very hard to get rid of.

Carol Perkins: The Perfect School

Previous Column: Keep the Party Going

By Carol Perkins

If I were younger, I would open a school unlike any other in the area.

Since I know nothing about teaching youngsters, my school would begin with seventh graders. Each year these students would have an intense course in practical living skills. That would be Class One.

Class Two would be a concentrated course in grammar and public speaking. Speaking correctly and confidently is valuable to their future growth.

The Third Class would be practical math: basic skills like adding, dividing, multiplying, and subtracting without a calculator, plus how to read a ruler, convert fractions, calculate percentages, and interest rates.
