Letter: Saving water when handwashing Peggy Fudge writes: In healthcare we are taught to leave the water running while washing (unless you are using an automatic on/off faucet.) Turning the faucet on and off recontaminates your hands. If you need to save water while scrubbing, use a clean paper towel to touch the faucet handle. When you've rinsed, use another paper towel to dry your hands and use that towel to shut off the water. IMO, In a setting where there's a lot of handwashing, automatic faucets will pay for themselves eventually. --PeggyComments re: Letter: concerns over water treatment plant capability 2020-03-25 19:19:37 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Letter: concerns over water treatment plant capability Joyce Coomer writes: It may have appeared somewhere, but I've not seen anything about the need to conserve water. Yes, Kentucky has had plenty of rain the past few months and the water table is high. I am more concerned with the people who work at water treatment plants. What if they get sick? What is the minimum number of employees needed to efficiently operate water treatment plants? Not only is water needed for day to day life, but at times like these, it must be kept flowing to our homes and -- very important -- the hospitals. We need to be as aware of water conservation now as we are during times of drought. I remember singing this little ditty when I was a kid -- "The toe bone's connected to the foot bone, the foot bone's connected to the leg bone . . ." Everything is connected, some way, some how. - JC Thank you for your questions, Joyce. I've also been concerned about water waste where videos, even on educational television, demonstrate hand washing but they leave the water running for 20 seconds while they lather up, rinse off and towel dry. As much as we've expanded proper hand washing in this season of the Coronavirus, it could amount to a lot of water. I hope everyone who can will turn off the water while lathering their hands, then again after rinsing. - LW 2020-03-25 09:18:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
