January 1920: A New Decade Dawns in Adair Co. January one hundred years ago marked the beginning of a remarkable decade, the Roaring Twenties, a ten year span that began with Prohibition, women's suffrage, and the real start of commercial radio (when the November broadcast of the presidential election caught the nation's imagination. The decade also saw the rise of speakeasies, jazz, illegal alcohol (and mobsters trying to get or maintain control of it); the proliferation of automobiles; Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh capturing the attention of the world with their respective transatlantic flights; shingle bobs, knee rouge, and raccoon coats becoming all the rage; and the national economy eventually super-heating and flaming out nine weeks before the start of the 1930s. But meanwhile, back in the Shire, 1920 started quietly and with a sense of optimism. By JIM A joint statement from the merchants of Columbia set forth that high wholesale prices notwithstanding, they had enjoyed a prosperous trade during the past twelve months -- that quite possibly "the business of Columbia, was better during the year 1919 than any other year in its history." Hutchison & Patteson announced plans to build a two-story brick business house on the Square come spring; C.C. Yates informed the public he had opened a grist mill near the S.F. Eubank shop and invited customers to give him a try; and both of Columbia's school began the new year with good openings with more students expected to arrive at each institution over the next several days. Oil fever raged in nearby Russell and Cumberland counties, and, advised the News, "preparations for driving the bit is being made in Adair County," adding that "geologists, who have been through this section, say there is not a doubt but oil can be found here." Topics included snow removal and commuting, Chili-Dog Harris, killed and humped eggs, and Grover Gilpin on whether customers can have ketchup on their pie. --Pen By Ed Waggener We are a commuting county Perhaps no article I've run has drawn as much comment as the one Wednesday morning about the condition of the ice-covered Adair County roads. I knew that Adair Countians have to travel, but I had underestimated the extent of our dependence on good roads. Jacob Haffner, Southern Regional Manager of Oshkosh B'Gosh, has to use many of the same roads I traveled. He's in charge of the Columbia and Celina plants (and soon the Hermitage Springs plant, too) and he knows that truck and supervisory travel between the plants is a must. I later talked with George Neal of Louisville News Service about his trucks. There are 10 employees and five trucks working out of Columbia. They traveled as far as Hardinsburg and Bardstown on the north Cave City, west; as far as Cookeville and Monterey, Tennessee, south; and over to Manchester on the East. Neal has to worry every time his trucks go out in the snow about whether or not they'll get banged up because of snow conditions. And he can't just stay home, as some would think he could. If he did, those TV Guides they sell would be worthless, and the company would lose money, and Adair County would lose the impact of a nifty payroll. Our workers work elsewhere Judge James Brock reminded me of the impact of commuting on Adair County life. Will lawmakers fix Kentucky's bail system? By John Cheves, Lexington Herald-Leader Kentucky lawmakers must decide this winter whether to fix a broken bail system that is clogging the state's dangerously overcrowded jails with thousands of people who can't afford to buy their freedom. But it's unclear if they will support reform legislation given how those efforts have failed in the past. "I think there's a lot of nervousness about attempting a full overhaul, in part because of the push-back we've seen from judges and prosecutors," said Josh Crawford, director of criminal justice policy for the Pegasus Institute in Louisville. Crawford worked on last winter's House Bill 94, a bail-reform measure that died without getting a vote in the House Judiciary Committee after local court officials opposed it. Lights on the Farm tour continues through New Years Eve Lights on the Farm will continue on the corner of R. Holmes Road and Hwy 206, about ten miles north of Columbia, until New Years Eve, 2019. Gene Dale and Jeanetta Holmes, daughter Melanie and Lloyd Willis and their children Caleb, Laura and Sam Willis make sure each year the landscape is lighted up with Christmas scenes. Their personal radio station says there were 25,000 at last count but just keep on going. The tour is free and they also accept donations to help with cost and expansion through New Years.
