Macdonald and Thilwind are MSC Swimmers of Week LWC Sports from Christopher Coombs COLUMBIA, Ky. - Jessica Macdonald has been selected as the Mid-South Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday. The Durban, South Africa native earned four total wins and four national A-Standards at their dual against Loyola (La.). She captured three individual A-Standards and one relay A-Standard. Macdonald's performance helped lead the Blue Raiders to a 127-113 upset victory over No. 6-ranked Loyola. This is the 13th weekly honor of her career and the fifth this season. Charles Weeden Sparks, 89, Columbia, KY (1930-2019) Mr. Sparks was a member of the Columbia Christian Church, member of Men for Christ and a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U. S. Air Force. He was a former Fire Chief for the Columbia/Adair Co. Fire Department, enjoyed making canes and having coffee talk with all the guys at McDonalds. Charles Weeden Sparks of Columbia passed away on Monday, December 23, 2019 at T. J Health Columbia. He was 89 years old. Funeral services will be held at 2pmCT on Thursday, December 26, 2019, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. Bro. John Davis and Bro. Paul Patton will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery, with full Military Honors presented by VFW Post 6097. Visitation will be after 8amCT on Thursday at the funeral home. Conservation Reserve Program sign-ups underway From Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Frankfort, KY - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reopened sign-ups for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to Kentucky landowners. The deadline to sign up for general participation is Feb. 28, 2020, while sign-ups for more permanent structures within the program are ongoing. Participants receive an annual stipend for their contribution to conservation. Landowners enrolled in the program contribute to improved water quality, reduced soil erosion, tourism and other economic development opportunities by removing environmentally sensitive land from agricultural use and then incorporating native plant species. Landowners can select a 10- or 15-year partnership or elect to have a permanent easement established as part of the continuous Conservation Reserve Program. Governor rebidding Medicaid Managed Care contracts By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - After ending the prior administration's Medicaid waiver last week that threatened the health care of nearly 100,000 Kentuckians, Governor Andy Beshear announced he is canceling and rebidding the state's Medicaid managed care contracts. "I believe health care is a basic human right and that every family should be able to see a doctor when they are sick," Gov. Beshear said. "Given the way the previous administration handled this process and lasting public concerns, the only option I had was to cancel the contracts and rebid. Christmas Eve program will be held at Rosenwald School The Adair Heritage Association met for the last time in 2019 on December 16 at the Public Library. The report on the historic Rosenwald Santa Fee/Flatwoods School project was first on the agenda. Sammy Hughes said it looks awesome and a Christmas event program is planned at the school at 7pmCT, December 24, 2019. Discussions were held on the best way to heat the school and the Adair Heritage Association propane heaters were offered. Everyone agreed the renovation to this stage couldn’t have happened in one short year without the Band of Brothers donating approximately $15,000 in professional labor.
