Letter: Thanks to readers for more of the story

Scott Spires writes:
Was surprised and pleased Wadlow's visit to Columbia is remembered and shared. Especially to younger people who probably didn't know about this part of Columbia history. Also Wadlow was so big the passenger side front seat of the car he rode in was removed where he could sit in the back seat. Peters shoe company was bought out by International Shoe Company. The names were interchangeable.

Thanks again for running column and posting the follow up comments about Wadlows visit. Even after hours of research I didn't know these details your readers shared. --Scott Spires

Dusk Settling In At The Stacie Bennett Place

2019-12-22 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.com.
Dusk Settling In At The Stacie Bennett Place, Adair County -- I like to make return visits throughout the year to see what new "toys" Stacie has put on display at his place. This old Dodge Truck has been repositioned and I must say I quite like its new location. The lighted outbuilding for me adds a little warmth and charm to this late evening photo. -- Robert

ACSO: Taylor Co. pair arrested for trespassing, meth

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Sunday, December 22, 2019, at 3:02amCT, officers responded to an incident at WalMart where an individual who had been previously banned from WalMart property was at the location.

The parties left the store, but were located in the parking lot by K-9 Sheriff Deputy Josh Durbin and Columbia Police Officer Jamie Cole.

During their investigation, officers believed narcotics to be in the subjects' vehicle, and Deputy Durbin deployed his K-9 Nitro.

Nitro alerted to the vehicle, and as a result methamphetamine was located in both the drivers compartment and the passengers compartment.

Christmas celebrated together at the Polly Barn

By Linda Waggener

A very Merry Christmas evening was hosted by the Glens Fork United Methodist and Beach Grove Separate Baptist churches. Dinner and the Christmas play delighted those in attendance at the early December, 2019 event held in the Polly Barn in Glens Fork, KY.

Laura Brummett, director, wrote, "We would like to thank each and everyone who came to the barn to be a part of this Christmas worship service. The journey to Bethlehem was a moment in time that will never be forgotten. These events that lead up to the birth of Christ have been shared for generations and will continue to impact the world as Jesus did, on that beautiful sacred night, bringing hope to those who had long awaited the arrival of the Messiah and those today who continue to seek His presence.

Winter Fire: A poem for the winter solstice

Poetry by Robert Stone for December 22, 2019:
Winter Fire

The shortest day of all the year
this year came sunny bright but cold
and celebrants raised a cheer
as brave and hardy went outside
to light the fire of life with pride.

At last the flames were lively low
fast swirling in the sacred pit
and festive folk all joined the show
as wine was shared with words of wit
from each and all as each saw fit.

Our souls are aflame
because all fire is one fire
master and servant.
--Robert Stone, 21 December 2008.

Mr. Wadlow's visit, 1939

By JIM

The attached image is part of a paid announcement placed in the Adair County News for a number of weeks before Mr. Wadlow's arrival in Columbia on Monday, May 3, 1939. (The rest of the announcement was a brief biographical sketch -- and a reminder that Lerman Bros. carried footwear manufactured by the Peters Shoe Company, the same firm that custom made Mr. Wadlow's.)

Two day's after the visit, the News printed an article headlined "Thousands See Giant at Lerman Bros. Monday," excerpted here in part:
"The world's tallest man, Robert Wadlow, proved an attraction which drew one of the largest crowds ever assembled on the Columbia Public Square when he appeared at the Lerman Bros. store Monday afternoon. . .

"Wadlow, who is 8 feet 8-1/4 inches tall, even made Columbia's tall Mayor, Ralph Hurt, look like a midget in comparison.

"It was evident early in the day that an unusually large number of people could be expected and long before the appointed hour of Wadlow's arrival every available parking place on the Square was taken and cars lined the streets approaching the center of town for several blocks. The crowd was estimated at several thousand and compared with the numbers here on Fair days."
