By Will Wright, Lexington Herald-Leader

Kentucky's Breaks Interstate Park will soon be home to the longest pedestrian swinging bridge in North America, according to a funding announcement Wednesday from the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority. Officials from the VCEDA said they will provide a grant of up to $433,000 to pay for the 725-foot walking bridge and a number of other projects, including infrastructure improvements within the park.

The bridge will cross the Russell Fork river, a major whitewater kayaking destination, and connect the Virginia and Kentucky sides of the park. Construction is expected to begin next fall, with a 2021 opening.

From Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Christmas gifts such as a pair of gloves with a matching scarf, a hoodie featuring the logo of a favorite sports team or sleepwear are safe choices.

While these are useful and usually appreciated, several items from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources make excellent Christmas gifts for the outdoors enthusiast.

A Kentucky Fish and Wildlife gift certificate allows for several purchase options on the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website at fw.ky.gov.

My host family is very kind; they always worry about me and help me. They came to my soccer games and took me to many places; like restaurants and church. I am so appreciative of my host family and the Lindsey Wilson College International program."

Adopt a Gravestone program

Preserve and honor history and ancestors

The Adair Heritage Association and the Adair County Public Library have given their support to the Silent City 'Adopt A Gravestone' program.

Grave markers can fall into disrepair due to advanced age, lack of local family, and lack of funding, as well as weather or vandalism. Adopt a Gravestone is a grass-roots program to encourage care and repair of older markers that need attention.

Adoptions by an individual, group, organization, or family are encouraged. There is no need to be related by blood or marriage, just a love of community and history. There are plenty of stones to adopt.

We ask that you secure an adoption form at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg St, Columbia, KY. Fill it out and return it to us.
