KY Afield Outdoors: Explore WMAs over the holidays

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - The Christmas holiday provides most of us some much-needed days off and time with family and friends, but sometimes, it is nice to escape from all of the food and festivities and stretch your legs. For those who need to relax and get away for a bit, Kentucky's wildlife management areas (WMAs) offer a place to go wander.

"We have 89 public wildlife management areas, covering 525,000 acres of Kentucky," said Keith Wethington, geographic information systems program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

With the leaves off the trees, this is a favorite time of year for hunters to explore areas for the following season. However, Wildlife Management Areas also offer overlooked opportunities for nature viewing, hiking and fishing. Visitors should be aware of Kentucky's free deer season for youth Dec. 28-29, and plan accordingly.

Some recommended areas to explore this winter include:

KSP Collects 236 Tons of Food for Kentucky Families

By Sergeant Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - The 10th Annual Kentucky State Police "Cram the Cruiser" food drive is in the books and raised over 236 tons (473,235 pounds) of food to help Kentucky families.

"Due to the generous giving spirit of individuals, businesses, schools and civic organizations throughout the state, we are able to assist Kentucky families who may be financially strapped this holiday season," said KSP Spokesman Sergeant Josh Lawson. "I am heartened by the incredible acts of charitable service and generosity by our fellow citizens who make the success of this project possible."

KSP initiated the Cram the Cruiser program in 2010 to assist needy families in its local post and region areas. Since then, the agency has contributed nearly two million pounds of food to shelters, food banks and churches throughout the Commonwealth.

You can register an emergency contact with KYTC

You can gift loved ones with peace of mind by registering an emergency contact on the Transportation Cabinet website

By Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - As boxes get wrapped and online orders ship to gift to loved ones this holiday season, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) encourages residents to give the free, year-long gift of peace of mind by registering an emergency contact. Emergency Notice is an online emergency contact registry accessible to law enforcement officials to know who you would like to be notified in case of a serious emergency. Kentucky citizens with an active driver's license, personal ID, or permit can submit a contact name and phone number online by visiting drive.ky.gov and clicking the Emergency Notice link.

"Registering an emergency contact takes the guesswork out of knowing who the right person is for officials to notify if you couldn't speak for yourself in an emergency," said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. "We want to encourage Kentucky drivers to join the nearly 14,000 drivers who've registered a contact since the initiative launched this spring."

The National Weather Service reports on average, 65% of adverse weather-related fatalities happened during snow and ice season - the months spanning from November to April. In Kentucky, 303 fatal crashes happened between November 2018 and April 2019.

KYTC teamed up with Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) to encourage Kentuckians to designate a preferred contact using this free, optional service.

Carol Perkins: A Santa Story

Previous Column: Gift-giving traditions

By Carol Perkins

Santa was in a tizzy. He paced around his cozy living room with a fire burning softly in the massive fireplace that threw shadows on the walls. "I can't find my boots!" he yelled to Mrs. Claus who was no stranger to his forgetfulness.

"Check in the closet where I put them last night," she said with a laugh. This Christmas Eve, he was more fidgety than usual. Although his sleigh was loaded, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. The toys were finished to perfection and the names on his spreadsheet had been checked off, one by one. What could be wrong?

He found his boots and pulled them on with a little more effort than this time last year. Too many cookies, he thought. His Santa suit hang in the closet, but he would wait until the last minute to put it on because the fur around the collar made him itch, but he would never admit it. After all, Santa wasn't supposed to have allergies.

Thank You from Adair County Emergency Management

By Mike Keltner

What a year with all the exercises, training, planning, storms, projects, and flooding. Lots of things are happening in the County of Adair and with Adair County Emergency Management. Some of the highlights are the new Backup EOC located on Campbellsville Road and the addition of Mr. Chad Wheet, in October, as a Deputy Emergency Management Director.

This morning, while preparing for an afternoon meeting with the Local and Regional Red Cross, I began to think of how fortunate I am as a local representative. We know it takes everyone to make great things happen including having the support of the County Fiscal Court and the community.
