LWC: Twenty-four Adair Co. residents receive degrees

Twenty-Four Adair County residents received undergraduate or graduate degrees at Lindsey Wilson College's 110th commencement ceremony, held on Saturday, December 14, 2019, in Biggers Sports Center.

Roger Thurman voted Fireman of the Year

LWC Confers 368 Degrees at Winter Commencement Ceremony

Sharon Archey of Columbia began participating in theatre productions at Lindsey Wilson College long before enrolling as a student.

"I had been doing theatre with Lindsey Wilson as a community member for a long time -- so coming here for school was the best choice for me."

Archey, who earned a bachelor's degree in theatre, was among 368 individuals who were awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biggers Sports Center on December 14 as the first half of LWC's Class of 2020. LWC also conferred its third doctorate degree on Saturday. Livinus Uba of Ashland, Ky., became the third graduate of the Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education & Supervision Program.

"Commencement day is always the most exciting day on campus," said Patricia Parrish who has served LWC since 2017 as vice president of academic affairs. "It's the fulfillment of student dreams and really, the start of the next step. It's so exciting to see the students and their families celebrate their accomplishments."

ACSO: Kansas man sent to UL after collision in Gradyville

On Friday, December 13, 2019, at 5:59pmCT, the Adair County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a single-vehicle collision 7 miles west of Columbia. Dispatch advised deputies that a vehicle had struck a tree and the driver was pinned in his vehicle.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Tanner Toothaker, age 20, of Kansas, was operating a 2007 Chevrolet truck toward Columbia on KY 80 west. Tanner lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons at this time. The vehicle left the roadway, went over an an embankment, and struck a tree head on.

Tanner was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by mechanical means by the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department. He was then treated on scene by Adair County EMS.

Emergency officials requested a helicopter, but due to weather all air medical services were grounded. Adair EMS transported to TJ Health of Columbia where Tanner was quickly transferred to University of Louisville by Adair EMS.

Boil Water Advisory lifted for Greensburg Road

From Columbia Adair Utilities District
December 17, 2019

As of 9:43amCT, on December 17, 2019, the boil water advisory for customers from 6168 Greensburg Road to 7180 Greensburg Road and all side roads in between has been lifted by the Division of Water. This means your water is safe for human consumption. You no longer have to boil your water.

Snake Creek Road closed to through traffic

Adair County Judge Gale Cowan reports this morning that Snake Creek Road is closed to through traffic because of high waters. Water is currently over the bridge.

Other roads are reopening and damage is being worked on this morning.

Gideon Richards wins Congressional App Challenge

Washington, D.C. - Congressman James Comer (KY-01) has announced that Gideon Richards, an 11th grader at the Central Kentucky Career Academy in Campbellsville, is the 2019 winner of the 1st District Congressional App Challenge.

Richards, a native of Columbia, developed the winning app titled "Inspiration" as part of a school project, led by his teacher Mrs. Sonya Kessler. The app inspires people to achieve their goals in life, whether big or small, by displaying inspirational quotes.

"I want to congratulate Gideon on this extraordinary accomplishment, which put his critical thinking, creativity, and intelligence on full display," Congressman Comer said. "Gideon is one of the best and brightest of the 1st Congressional District, and I hope his interest in technology and student involvement is an example for all of his peers."

The Congressional App Challenge was created to help promote student interest in STEM skills, specifically computer science and coding. The competition is open to students in grades 6th through 12th across the 1st District. For more information on the competition, you can visit comer.house.gov.

At the third Sunday in Advent December 15, 2019 early service at Columbia United Methodist Church, the Children's Choir, backed by the Adult Choir, sang "Ha La La La - Joy to the World."

KY Cattlemen's Ground Beef hits $1M milestone

FRANKFORT, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles commended Kentucky Cattlemen's ground beef for marking $1 million in total farm gate sales since launching in March of last year.

"Congratulations to Kentucky Cattlemen's Beef on the historic milestone of $1 million in farm gate sales," Commissioner Quarles said. "This project has been a dream of the Kentucky ag community for decades, and it is exciting to see this product fly off the shelves at Kroger stores throughout Kentucky and surrounding states. I applaud them for their success and wish them the best as this product generates additional income for Kentucky cattle producers."

Adopt-a-Highway art contest promotes litter-free KY

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Secretary Jim Gray invites Kentucky students to submit original artwork for the agency's annual Adopt-a-Highway art contest following the theme, Adopt-a-Highway: Keeping Kentucky Beautiful. The artwork promotes a litter-free message to residents and winners can receive prizes.

Entries will be accepted starting Monday, Dec. 16 and must be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 14 to be considered eligible to win. The entry period stretches across two academic semesters and the winter break to allow more students the opportunity to enter. Evaluation criteria is available on the program website to give students, parents and teachers guidelines for how the contest will be judged. Students enrolled in Kentucky public, private or homeschools are eligible to apply.

The contest is divided into four age groups: 5-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18. Winners of each age division earn a $100 gift card while second and third-place finishers receive a $50 gift card. Additionally, first through third-place recipients for all age groups will have their featured in the Adopt-a-Highway Calendar and prints will be displayed in the Transportation Cabinet's Conference Center in Frankfort.
