Governor Beshear ends Medicaid waiver

By Crystal Staley

Frankfort, KY - In his first week in office, Governor Andy Beshear eliminated roadblocks created to make it more difficult for nearly 100,000 Kentuckians to access critical health care and pharmacy benefits.

Gov. Beshear did so by having his administration notify the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, ending the 1115 demonstration project, known as "Kentucky HEALTH," that required Kentuckians to meet certain work requirements in order to have health insurance coverage. Gov. Beshear also signed an executive order to protect the state's Medicaid expansion program. The governor effectively ended Kentucky's litigation involving the waiver in federal court (the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia), and has asked the court to dismiss Kentucky from the lawsuit.

Gov. Beshear believes that Kentuckians and the Commonwealth's health care systems are better served by repealing the waiver.

"Health care is a basic human right and every Kentucky family deserves to see a doctor and receive treatment when they are sick," Beshear said. "I will not allow burdensome roadblocks and unnecessary red tape to stand in the way of the health and well-being of Kentuckians. If we are going to move forward as a Commonwealth, and build a bigger and brighter future for all our families, we must first ensure they have access to health care."

Simple rules can prevent holiday home fires

By Ricki Gardenhire

Frankfort, KY - House fires during the holiday season are more frequent, costly and deadly than at any other time of the year. But, there are safety measures that Kentuckians can take to avoid home fires this season.

"Christmas trees and other holiday decorations are an annual tradition for many, but misuse and neglect can lead to deadly consequences," said Kentucky Fire Marshal Mike Haney. "It's important that we take the time to read and follow safety precautions as we dress-up and decorate our homes and businesses for the holidays."

Between 2013 and 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an annual average of 160 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees, according to the National Fire Protection Association. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries and $10 million in damages.

If your family's holiday is not complete without a live tree, consider these precautions:
