Kentucky Color: Green River Woods on RFD-TV Today

By Billy Joe Fudge

A segment filmed at Homeplace on Green River/Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area the first week of September by Rural Heritage Magazine will air at 2:30pmCT/3:30pmET on RFD-TV this afternoon.

I know that barring an overtime or two, the big game will be in the history books by this time; therefore, you might find time to turn over to RFD-TV and enjoy South Central Kentucky on international TV.

I haven't seen it yet and I hope you enjoy it, in spite of having to listen to me while I was limping around the woods on a bad knee.

The nearly 6 miles of trail at Homeplace/Tebbs Bend is quite a resource and will soon have another 2+ miles added to it by the end of 2020.

Letter: Schools no more than 8 miles apart

Darryl Smith writes:
I remember my father telling me that the rule of thumb was that schools shouldn't be over 8 miles apart so that no students would have to walk more than 4 miles to reach the nearest school. The system wasn't perfect and schools weren't perfectly spaced along every 8 miles of road but that was the idea.

It was a different time before school buses became common. He liked to talk about the big yearly basketball tournament held in Jamestown (he attended grade school at Jabez, then Ono in the mid-thirties) and how local families would put up boys from the outlying schools for the duration of the tournament because the daily travel would have been impossible for most of the players to manage. --Darryl

LWC Men's basketball defeats Thomas in Battle at the Beach

By Christopher Coombs

Panama City, FL - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team trailed only twice in their contest against Thomas (GA) at Harrison Field House as they rolled in an 89-68 victory during their first game of the Battle at the Beach.

In a game that saw two Blue Raiders (7-2) break the 20 point threshold and five players reach double-figures scoring, Lindsey Wilson was efficient from the floor shooting 49.1 percent. LWC shot 44.8 percent from beyond the arc and made 22-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe.

Puffballs as food

By Marie Freeman

My puffballs discovered at fall time never make it to the spore stage. I consume mine in the fall if I'm fortunate to find some. When browned, to me they almost have a cheese flavor.

What I can't consume--since some I've found would feed 5--I dehydrate and use for squirrel food in the winter.

Need to be cautious obviously. But I find the mushroom easy to identify from its deadly look-alike. I think when they spore the dust can be toxic especially to pets?

Single-year snapshot of Adair County schools, 1944

By JIM

To give a single-year snapshot response to the questions posed by Mr. McCammish: In 1944, there were ninety (90) county schools, not including the Columbia Graded and High School; Jackman Graded and High, Knifley High, and their respective faculty.

In that still segregated era, 82 common schools were for "whites" students and eight were for "coloreds," as the two groups were called in the News, and the latter schools were labelled as such in the list.

The following is list of the county schools and the initially assigned instructors, as it appeared in the June 14, 1944 Adair County News.
