UK professor working on medication to treat meth use disorder

By Alex Acquisto, Lexington Herald-Leader

When Dr. Linda Dwoskin first began researching new therapeutics to help wean people with methamphetamine use disorder off the drug, she didn't anticipate the letters, emails and phone calls. Because Dwoskin is working toward something historic, her team's efforts have been publicized over the years in national medical publications and journals.

KSP warns of 'bear' sightings during holidays

Black Friday shoppers can help support Trooper Teddy Project

Frankfort, KY - It's nearly Black Friday and Kentucky State Police hopes shoppers will include a Trooper Teddy Bear on their Christmas list this year. The bears go on sale Thanksgiving night and will sell for $15 over the holiday weekend. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Trooper Teddy Project, which provides teddy bears to children in traumatic situations such as a car crash, exposure to drugs, or domestic abuse cases which frequently result in the arrest of a parent.

"When KSP is called to a scene, it's usually a tragic and difficult situation," said KSP spokesman Sergeant Josh Lawson. "Unfortunately, there are many incidents where children are involved and witness traumatic things. To minimize the situation and help them cope, we provide children with a teddy bear to calm them down during times of crisis."

Lawson said the program is designed to develop trust between officers and children.

For those interested in purchasing a bear or making a tax deductible contribution to the project, citizens can access the KSP website at http://kentuckystatepolice.org/trooper-teddy.

Adair County's one- and two-room schools

By Mike Watson

Thanksgiving is the time to tell stories of family and share traditions. Sit down with the youngsters and the elders of the family and share past experiences so they will not be lost to posterity.

Elders would enjoy the experience of sharing their youth, and the younger generation will appreciate--if not now, then certainly later--the opportunity to learn little-known bits of family history. And take photographs of everyone interacting. Happy Thanksgiving!

One- and two-room schools, black and white, from the late 1800s to 1960s, in Adair County Kentucky:

Kentucky Color: Visiting Thanksgivings Past

By Billy Joe Fudge

H G Wells brought time travel into the cultural lexicon with his novel, The Time Machine in 1895. Ever since, the idea of being able to physically visit the past or transport to some far off point in future time has been in the public arena of thought and debate.

As to the possibility of physical time travel, we will just have to leave that up to the future to determine. However, there are two well established modes of time travel available to us today; imagination and memory.

Right near the dawn of humanity at the Tower of Babel, God Himself said, "nothing will be restrained from mankind, which they have imagined to do". Since then, nary a thing has man or woman ever done which was not preceded by a thought or mental picture, an imagining if you will. Our imaginations have allowed us to visit far away destinations of time and place. Our imaginations have allowed us to envision a time when we could travel cross country by rail, by automobile, experience the freedom of flight like a bird, travel beyond Earth's atmosphere, orbit the Earth, travel to the Moon and now we imagine traveling to Mars and beyond.

Yes, imagination can carry us forward from the present but a much more treasured trip for most of us who are getting a little long in the tooth is made possible by our memories of times past.
