Strategic Initiative for Transformational Employment announced

By Holly Neal

Frankfort, KY - The Department for Workforce Investment (DWI), within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, has partnered with the Department of Corrections (DOC), Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) and the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center to implement Strategic Initiative for Transformational Employment (SITE) to enhance career and recovery services for Kentuckians impacted by substance abuse.

Kentucky received $100,000 in U.S. Department of Labor Fidelity Bonding Demonstration Grant funding to expand use of fidelity bonds to help individuals with criminal backgrounds and those recovering from a substance abuse disorder to find employment opportunities in the Commonwealth.

Through the Department for Workforce Investment, fidelity bonds are issued to employers to assist with job placement of formerly incarcerated and at-risk job applicants. Fidelity bonds provide employers with a limited-liability insurance at no cost in an effort to help insure employers against theft, forgery, larceny or embezzlement for the first six months of employment of at-risk employees.

Campbellsville receives Certified Local Government grant

By Diane Comer

Frankfort, KY -. - Following a round of 12 project grants earlier this year, five Kentucky communities will now benefit from a second round of Certified Local Government (CLG) funding to facilitate professional staff development, training and public education during FY2019-20.

These "extra opportunity" grants will use the remaining $11,663 in annual funds allocated to the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office (KHC) by the National Park Service, available to qualifying local governments through a federal Historic Preservation Fund pass-through to assist their work in recognizing, protecting and saving historic places.

CLG designation offers a way for city and county-wide historic preservation commissions to develop a comprehensive approach to historic preservation and promote the integration of preservation interests into the planning process. Grants require a 40% local match in additional committed funds or in-kind services.

Staff from Bellevue, Campbellsville, Covington and Horse Cave will use the funds as stipends to attend the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) FORUM conference July 22-26 in Tacoma, Washington, the only national conference focused on issues facing local historic preservation commissions and historic districts.

KSP: Buckle up and plan sober rides

The Kentucky State Police will step up enforcement efforts over the Thanksgiving Holiday, and encourages drivers to buckle up and plan sober rides

By Sergeant Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the most heavily traveled holidays of the year and to ensure drivers make it safely to their destinations, troopers will be on Kentucky roadways looking for safety belt and impaired driving violations. In addition to those infractions, the KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will place an emphasis on truck violations and inspections.

KSP is partnering with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) "Make It to the Table: Don't Drink and Drive" Thanksgiving enforcement effort.

Federal grant funds, provided through KOHS, will allow KSP to utilize more troopers and officers on Kentucky highways during peak travel times.

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update: Thanksgiving

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Just as the crisp autumn air begins to turn towards winter frost, Kentucky enters into a new season of thanksgiving and transition. The hustle and bustle of the holidays are well underway, but we continue to remain busy in Frankfort with interim joint committee meetings and other legislative business in preparation for the 2020 Regular Session of the General Assembly.

Thankfully, election season is behind us and we can shift our focus to what this time of year is really about-- family, friends, and our communities. Each Thanksgiving, I look forward to being home in my district hearing from constituents and spending time with loved ones.

As we enjoy our Thanksgiving meals, let us not forget those who are in need, especially during the colder winter months.

Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving preparations

Previous column: Wardrobe reminiscing

By Carol Perkins

The plans begin with a trip to the GFS store in Bowling Green where I can buy the best dressing (compared to mine) and the best sweet potato casserole, compared to mine. Check that off the list. Next, I must buy a turkey. How many pounds do I need? Let's see, there will be six of us, so surely a fifteen-pound one will do. We only eat the white meat, so maybe I need a turkey breast. That seems like cheating Thanksgiving! The look of a turkey on a plate compared to a turkey breast is not as "Thanksgivingly." Before buying, I must lift and thump each one. Why, I don't know! They aren't watermelons!

As I drop the turkey into the cart, I hear a "thud" against the metal cart as if I had dropped it from the ceiling. I look around to see if anyone else heard. Then I gather all the other ingredients I have decided I must have to recreate some delicious Pioneer Woman dishes.
